After splitting some oak and black walnut firewood I thought I would save some of it for some projects this year. Here is a chess board made from White Oak, Black Walnut, and Maple firewood pieces.

Both on my list of tools to get. A planer and a chop saw. I am a Plumber who also does wood working, so I have most hand tools and power hand tools and now getting battery tools. I have a Scroll saw, drill press, table saw, band saw, and two sanders. Oh, I would like a 3D printer too! Nice work, Todd.

I like the 3D printer pieces, they're cool😎; the imperfections give it character, don't fix it☺️ Beautiful chess board. My step daddy taught me how to play when I was little girl

I think it looks great, Todd! It looks like you tried to match the grain patterns. Was that K assisting you? I can't imagine Lisa having blue nails.

I hate to say it but, That thing is going to crack right down the middle in a few months. Not even close enough to dry for project making.

I would think it’s dry the wood has been sitting in my shop since last year and was in a stack outside before that. But I guess time will tell

@@SSLFamilyDad Dry is relative. Dry firewood, is great for burning, but terrible for furniture making, especially something that has so many glued parts. With the seasonal changes, the stress on the joints will cause cracks. The very best you can do with air-dried wood is about 10-12% in your area. Bringing this piece into the house in winter with that dry wood burning heat, will be an issue, then it will swell back up in the summer causing a lot of stress. Without a kiln to dry wood, you may want to bring a few pieces, planed to rough dimension and leave sit 5-10 feet away from your wood burner, stacked and stickered, over the winter, they will be dry enough come spring. When you are ready to use it, plane to final dimensions and have at it. A good way to gauge this would be to weigh a piece or two, then reweigh in the spring, you will see an obvious difference when it is dry. Otherwise, this is a nice-looking project, I really like the contrasting woods, and honestly, I like the rustic look of it. I think you did a really nice job with this.

@@SSLFamilyDad I think it will be OK if you oil it well. And oiling a wood project is the most satisfying part! We need a short showing that. 😁
