This is super cool, thanks for sharing it Michael. We don't have a dining table yet, but when we do, you bet I'm going to load up this video again for ideas and try to DIY our own sunken board game table. I love the idea of being able to pause a larger game and still use the table as a table (for another game of course), and the DIY approach is fun and can save a whole bunch of $. If it's fit for your needs, then *it is* perfect 😊

Great project. I've looked at a number of dining tables I wanted to convert, but you had some ideas I never though about. I would apply some poly finish over the stained wood for more protection.

Probably already mentioned somewhere below but you might consider removing some length from the bottom of each leg to get it back to the original overall height off the floor.. Having it too high can cause fatigue if you actually use the table for dining.

Just have to make sure that doesn't result in the sides of the table being lower and getting too close to people's legs. Can make sitting down and getting up pretty awkward.

Thinking of converting my old dinning table, was thinking of building the 'box' into the frame instead of ontop, my frame is just different enough. I guess if that doesn't work your idea will be my plan b! Great Job! P.S. I looked on used sites and I found a few tables similar to yours for around $100 if anybody is thinking about this project but doesn't have a table, they are easy to find!

Great job. Did you end up with wrinkles in the felt? I'm not sure but i thought I saw some. When you're putting the felt on you need to stretch it. You fasten one side in the middle then go to the opposite side in the middle, pull it tight and then staple it. Then go to one of the other sides pull it tight and staple it. Repeat on the last side. Then go to the middle of each of the sections and pull it tight and staple it. Work your way around like putting on a tire. Once its looking good fill in the rest of the staples.

Really good job! This gave me some ideas on how to do my own. But... the difference that many people buy a board gaming table is to have a "well" so you can hide a game you want to come back to, and make it a dining table, and vice versa. Your table does not have much depth, so does it still work for you??
@TheNerdShelves
@TheNerdShelves 2 года назад
Thank you so much for the kind words😊... Yes, there is more than enough room to hide a game. I've done it many times. I can't keep the box hidden with the game, but a standard game easily fits.

Fantastic video! Thank you for encouraging us! Two questions: 1. how do you use now the original table top? You just put it on top? Or you dont use it all? 2. How expensive was the material u used? (Without the machines 😜)
@TheNerdShelves
@TheNerdShelves 3 года назад
Yes, the original table top sits on top of everything. It leaves a gap so we can leave a game set up underneath, which is pretty cool. We got the table for free, then I spent about $250 materials... Lumber is pretty expensive these days😞

What tool are you using to put the arm rests on? Is that a nail gun? How do you ensure the nails/staples don’t catch clothing/skin? That’s one of my big worries as I am planning a similar project. How to hide the nails and make sure they aren’t a snag hazard.
@TheNerdShelves
@TheNerdShelves 2 года назад
Yes, I did use a nail gun. You can adjust the power, and after a couple of tests on scrap pieces wood, I made sure the nail was countersunk enough into the wood to not protrude out. We haven't had a single issue. The best part about using this method is that the finishing nails are headless and leave tiny holes, barely noticeable.

Sorry, I can't resist. The fact that for millania tables are built flat, without borders/fences/whatsoever is because it's a stupid idea. If You are not convinced try to do anything on a table having a piece od 2x2 under Your elbows. Build the table flat. If You want to store a boardgame setup and not to remove it for dinner, You could make a sliding panel underneath. For that maybe You need a woodworker. If that's the case, ask me.
@TheNerdShelves
@TheNerdShelves 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for stopping by and for watching. We always appreciate comments and feedback. There are many different ways I could have built this table, but I don't think this was "stupid." Many professional poker tables are sunk with rails around the edge for an arm rest. These tables are used in the professional poker tour. Also, many professional board gaming tables made by professional woodworkers are sunk as well. There are many reasons for this. We have been using this table for years and it is very comfortable and works great. Not only that, we have had hundreds of compliments from people playing on our table too. I completely understand that not everyone wants their gaming table like this and would rather a flat table. That's great. There are many options out there. However, I don't think that makes this a "stupid" idea. Thanks again for watching. We appreciate your comments.
