GENERAL BOBA PROCEDURE:
Fill a large pot halfway with water and bring to a boil. If desired, add ~10 drops liquid sweetener to infuse some sweetness. (I like to use stevia or monk fruit drops.)
Add uncooked boba tapioca pearls to boiling water. Lightly stir unto boba begin to float, then cover and boil for 3 minutes.
Remove pot from heat and carefully drain boba pearls. Transfer to a bowl and cover with water until ready to use. (Otherwise they’ll stick together!)

I've made my own boba pearls and it came out really good! I used tapioca flour/starch and kneaded it like regular dough, made small balls, and then boiled them. Didn't add any sugar as I was just testing it to see if it'd actually work, and it did! You can definitely boil the pearls in some sweetener or add sugar to the flour--whatever works for you.

I think popping boba would be healthier(ish) because you'll get to choose what "juice" will be inside the boba before dropping it to a calcium solution for it to form the gelatinous outer core. Enjoyed this video! Great content as always. :)

Have you tried using glutinous rice flour (the thing to make mochi with)? Sometimes I just mix glutinous rice flour with a bit of water to make a dough, then roll those into tiny balls then boil. It has the same texture of being soft and chewy. I dont know how much better it is than boba but its a nice substitute :)

I also think it's definitely about flavor choice! I tried a green tea one once and it truly was disgusting and bitter, I've since learned that black milk tea with lavender or rose flavoring is my preferred way- or a mango black tea with jelly instead of boba (or both). It's definitely not for everyone, but especially if you chose a flavor outside your usual flavor preferences, I'd really encourage you trying it again!

Make your own tapioca pearls! It’s healthier than those with added chemicals from stores and super easy to make! Literally just take tapioca starch (you can purchase this at asian grocery stores) and boiling hot water. Combine these two and mix until they are one solid dough, then cut and roll in to balls and just boil some water and once it’s boiling pour the balls in and wait until the float to the surface and cook for one more minute on medium heat. Good luck!
@MindOverMunch

Yes that is an option! Although, tapioca still isn't the best fuel for our bodies - but DIY tapioca balls would certainly be cleaner than store-bought. Thanks for the tip!

Here in the Caribbean we boil tapioca balls in a saucepan with water then add milk , sugar and cinnamon and eat as a porridge didn't know till now it was so high carb use to eat it a lot when I was a child but stopped when I got older

There are tons of healthy boba here in Japan. I see them every street corner. They are kinda expensive tho. Like 600¥-700¥ one medium cup (5$-6$)

You are able to use fruit jellies instead of boba, so with this in mind you can further cut down with natural fruit jellies.

Love it! Thank you! Kind of random, but I was wondering if you could do future videos on Kombucha Tea, Sauerkraut, or really any fermented foods? I'd love to hear your opinions on them.

Hey Mind Over Munch! Loved this video, and I had a general suggestion to make. Would you consider pointing out healthy foods that might actually be detrimental for people with common health issues? I have on multiple times heard on this channel and other healthy food channels on the benefits of matcha/green tea, and they convinced me to buy and drink green tea for a period of time before I thought to do my own research and found that green/black tea was actually bad for persons with serious anemia like me. That is just one example. I understand that it is very difficult to comb through ingredients and decide what health conditions to mention or not (or the topic may seem off in a recipe video), so perhaps a single video just on some common ingredients will be manageable? Thanks!

Hi Bonnie, thanks for your feedback! So glad you are enjoying the videos. I do talk about benefits of some of these ingredients, but it wouldn't be possible for me to list all possible drawbacks for specific health conditions- I encourage viewers to take responsibility for their health and do their own research so they know for sure that they are putting proper fuel in their bodies :)

Funny thing is I always have like maybe 4 bobas and then I get sick of them because they're so sweet and starchy and mostly just enjoy the drink on its own. I do however love those fruit flavored jellies you can get instead(The lychee and mango ones, yumyum). Maybe for a healthier version you could put small fruit chunks? Like pineapple or real lychee instead of the jellies or make small chunk of homemade agar agar.
