I love the fact that you need a shipping container for storage, even with all your outbuildings. Makes me not feel so bad about taking up every bit of cupboard/shed space with tools and materials in my house!

Not so much the space, just the security and proximity to the house build. Don't worry, the barns aren't all full yet! 😂

Hi Tim, you can buy insulated containers. And next time you build this the lip under where the lid is could slide along on the timbers rather than the bottom of it. When you start the main house build are you going to have helpers during the transformation. (Ie us subscribers) would be good as I remember you were hoping to do that at your last place workshop build but covid ruined that.

Hi Tim, by far the best option I’ve found for making garage/workshop storage racking is welding up steel frames with ply boards on. I was a hobby woodworker and was absolutely astounded by how little steel you need to carry the weight. I did a basic welding course at the local college (£190 and a few Thursday evenings very well spent!) and steel is actually cheaper than timber!

I bought a load of these about 10 years ago and they’re mostly ex-Debenhams and high street clothing stores - the only thing to point out about the drain holes is that they’re big enough for a mouse to get in! I used a pressure washer to get all the labels off (as they appear to use some sort of NASA glue/paper!).

Condensation: I always find it useful to keep in mind the way you keep condensation away is to keep the temperature of everything above the dew point, you can do this by either increasing the temperature or reducing the amount of water in the air. As this isn't going to be very long term and as I expect the doors are going to be left open for long periods of time, I'd add some insulation and then put a dehumidifier in the back corner which drains to the outside for most of the year and have a oil filled radiator on low set to its lowest temperature in the spring. The dehumidifier will do a little bit of heating but more importantly it'll drop the humidity down below the dew point. The major problem times I've found with condensation have been during the spring with the warmer wet days and then the cold nights (hence the suggestion of radiator), everything gets cold at night and then the dew point rises rapidly when the sun comes up.

Thanks Tim, this is just the sort of project I love, well done both, poor Jo looked frozen at the start there, reminded me of working on our renovation - PJs under work clothes, it's all about layers ! Btw, nothing wrong with a bit of over-engineering, especially if it means you can re-use materials ! I fitted out a half container sized resin shed last year and used a combination of old fence posts (cleaned up, sanded and oiled) 18mm OSB and 2x1 roofing battens, solid as a rock and has also stiffened up the whole structure ! I shudder to think the total weight in there now but it isn't going anywhere ! Anyone who has followed you for any time knows you're not slacking, take care of yourselves, and we'll happily consume whatever you have the time to post - Happy 2024 !

I rented a converted shipping container as a workshop for a while. It has kingspan in the walls and ceiling, overboarded with osb. One side of the container was removed and a sliding patio door fitted. Consumer unit and electrics. Bone dry and reasonably warm with a little electric heater. A bit fancy for a site container but plenty of food for thought.

Hi, when I used a shipping container for storage I just drilled out and fitted round wall vents. Didn't have any problems with damp or condensation at all. I found this a quick and cheap solution. Best of luck.

You can always run some strips of OSB or plywood in from the sides of those "shelves" if you're really worried about boxes tipping (or cardboard boxes sagging in the middle).

Brilliant Vid. Thank you. Re storage , Shipping containers are terrible for condensation. That's why any stuff that comes from Asia are filled with those wee silicone moisture bags. Need to put a fan in it i'm afraid. 😂

I did something similar albeit freestanding a good few years ago now, still doing great. 600mm ladder frames in 4x2cls with caber flooring on top, made them up however long my run was (2x4m)and however many shelves I wanted (4). 4x2cls legs front and back at, say, 1500 centres. Legs face-fixed with single M12 coach bolts, 'timber connectors', and plate washers. I went 2.4 high - plenty longitudinal racking stiffness from the timber connectors and likewise transversely from the depth of the ladder frames. I'd maybe do some bracing if taller than 3m.

Great idea and nicely put together. One thing to consider before you swap out the storage crates for your cardboard boxes - the bottoms of the cardboard boxes are likely to sag due to lack of support between the runners, especially with it being what looks to be a rather damp environment in that building. It may be best to stick with your original plan to use the heavy duty plastic boxes unless you add some plywood or similar for additional support. But then you would be negating the benefit of using free timber you already had.
@UpsideDownFork

Did you think about rotating those runners by 90 degrees to give you more surface to slide the boxes on and reduce the height spacing between the boxes?

Or rather than full noggins, a small block either side would serve the same purpose

Hi Tim, it is interesting to hear that you have come to the same conclusion as myself regarding screws, in my opinion TX are in a different class and if you hunt around you can find them fairly cheap on the net, just order a small quantity to check the quality before buying a lot. Axminster tools sel a starter pack at a fair price and they are good quality and remember you can open a trade account with them and get discount on your purchases and free delivery on larger orders. Regarding the house build and problems with planning , remember you are allowed to increase the size of the house by 25% at a later date so maybe you can build that idea in the new house making it easier to add on later? Alsp remember the children are growing fast and will be flying the nest sooner than you both realise!! so maybe dont add too much space due to the cost of heating? you two

A friend of mine managed the condensation in a container rather than try stopping it. Inside he had "fly sheet" of visqueen to an internal gutter on the side that collected into a bucket just inside the door. Supplemented with boxes of Silica Gel. I have since been on a ship being laid up without power, some drier product was suspended in pouches from the deckhead (ceiling) every 1.5 metres that controlled humidity to protect the electronics. The intention was to seal up and isolate this space so may not be efficient if you have to access the container regularly..

Depends how long you intend on keeping the shipping container, but we have one at the local railway where we built a small pitched roof ontop of it. This keeps the water off it 100% adds some insulation from the heat in the summer. This also helps keep the inside as big as possible
@robgullen

Similar concept in my shed although I lashed out on a couple of sheets of OSB for support (and shelves for stuff not in the crates) - the bins that fit are "on loan" from a well-known online supermarket

Hi all. In may experience with containers on building sites etc . They don’t tend to have a problem with condensation , if it’s just dry things you are putting inside them like tools machinery timber fixings etc you should be ok . Obviously they will get cold in the winter, so best not store drill batteries in them . But when it comes to security they do take some beating , and as a point of interest I’ve often seen them used for storing cement and even plaster , which are definitely very susceptible to moisture. So my advice would be not to worry, as long as you’re realistic with your expectations . Kind regards as always. 😀👍

When you where building the storage in the room next to the shop for the crates, it looked to me like the wood you used was so beefy you could have sorted your problem of the box slipping off by flipping them 90degrees. That way you also gain a centimeter or 2 to 3 by the looks of it in height for each layer of storage. Being a month late after you finished editing footage from maybe even way earlier, don't expect you to flop all these brackets, but maybe i put something in the back of your mind for future builds.
@gaz740

My suggestion would be to turn the noggins on their side...gives more support under the box.
@sibat777

I forgot what they are called but you can get used shipping containers that have been used for dry goods such as bulk coffee, these come pre lined with fairly good quality wood panelling providing an air gap between the metal and the interior, handy for installing shelving etc. its not as good as proper insulation but these have been designed for shipping dry goods by sea so should be sufficient for your needs. I think the are vented too, so I would hook a small solar panel to a computer case fan to just provide a small amount of air circulation. Good luck

Instead of having the boxes stand on the narrow bottom you could let them hang from the wider top lip. You would need to rebuild it though so that the gaps are a little bit wider. But I've seen plenty of diy storage builds on RU-vid where they do that instead.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 6 месяцев назад
That was the plan but all the different sources of containers had different lip designs which was a same.

If you ever move this racking, then make the uprights a little wider apart, and raise the rails so that the crates hang on the wider perimeter surround at the top of the crate as opposed to sitting on the bottom of the crate. There would then be no need to put in noggins to stop the crate dropping through. 😊

Maybe the support should've been under the lip in the top. It would have to be a bit wider, but then you might be able to squeeze in an extra layer.

No need for insulation in the container, you need only to move enough air from one end to the other. That can be achieved using some cheapo bathroom ventilators.

Don't quite get why you fitted the top front beam at the same height as the structural (back) beam, because if you raise it and the runners at its back you can get an extra row of storage boxes in there that are reachable.
