Hand held Bulk Eraser made from a rare earth magnet and some junk, easy build, and my vintage 1970s Sony TC 270 reel to reel tape recorder. Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe for more :)
I strongly advise against using this method. (1) You absolutely need an AC magnet to bulk erase tapes. Otherwise you just magnetise the tape, adding noise that the erase head might not be strong enough to get rid of. I think you can actually hear the noise towards the end of the video. (2) As even mentioned in the video, it‘s insane to put magnets anywhere near a tape head or other metal parts in contact with the tape. Even ifyou don‘t drop the magnet, you run a serious risk of magnetising your heads and transport. You might end up ruining your old recordings. Just buy a cheap bulk eraser used.
I greatly agree to this. By placing a DC-like magnetic bias on the tape, you may virtually get rid of the previous content but the magnetic media will be saturated in one direction (either '+' or '-') rather than at 0 gauss. As this user indicated, the erase head on the tape drive may not have enough magnetic energy to bring the media back to 0 guass. This means that the recording head that is trying to place new content on the media may at best have significant harmonic distortion.
hi went back to zonal one inch because the seeing eye lot dropped alot on the used market and there's 100's of tapes out there and a soundcraft 381-8 came in to mywork shop this has 7 1/2 so i bagged it cost £260 was in a bad way like you i used a computer to save audio a computer tec said to use a pair of hard drive under one drive letter works very well never lost audio for years
hi big tip to all a akai 1800ss has a full track eraser head i use it on 8 track tapes 100% clean all audio from tape or find a full track tape head this will do as well
Andrew Dupuis mine doesn’t work now, but you could try spraying contact cleaner eg. Servisol into them, if you want to replace them have a look at the back of them, write the numbers down and search the numbers online, you’ll probably find replacements for sale, I hope this helps
