I followed your video and it worked out great! Thank you for the tutorial. I used a hairdryer for 5 minutes on each side and it had the same result if anyone’s wondering.
omg, are you the real miraie? The osu god? Actually a huge fan of your channel and have even been using your Osu! skin for like a year. Hairdryer would work, but I would recommend you would need to heat it for much longer as it doesn't get as hot as a heatgun. I would also let it cool then heat again. Btw. please get in touch, would love to send some cables your way!
@@CruzCtrl Damn this thread is so wholesome. :') I've been trying to coil my regular usb type C cable lol but your aviator coils are so sick! Also I do not have a drum stick like yours so I have to use 3 chopsticks to coil mine and it didn't come close to looking as nice as the one in the video unfortunately haha
Just did my first custom today! Deff not the prettiest solder job but shhh no one has to know what’s under that heat shrink lol. Your videos were a huge help, thanks a ton!
I don't watch DIY's. RU-vid doesn't recommend me DIY's. But then they recommended Cabling Coiling DIY. I now have a sudden urge to make this a hobby......Thanks youtube lol.
Been an awesome night of following your tutorials. My first cable works! The coil is cooling now, last step is to add the YC8 connector. and we're done!
I like the honesty and I think I will do it myself instead of buying one. So I can improve myself and sell to people who are to lazy, which I can completely understand, since I do it on my workplace :D
You could wrap that on a metal tube and then blow the heat down the tube. You don't even need to hold it, just lay it and the gun down together and check it every now and then.
the fact that you have your own cable making hustle and you create a tutorial blows my mind because everyone that ive ever known that is a cable maker will not share their secrets. i cant thank you enough!
I really considering doing this as my first tries went pretty decent, and here in germany there is kinda no one doing it. +Its kinda fun and I can do it completely on work :D
great tutorial, was goign to buy a fancy coil after seeing a sleeved coiled cable with an aviator plug but now I'll be able to doit myself with the cables I already have
done my first coiled cable today super excited to see how it turns out thank you for your amazing channel has been a real help :) a order will be incoming soon as I get paid many thanks for inspiring me to make my own cables its been super fun :)
where do you get the actual cable???? PLEASE SHOW HOW YOU CUT, SOLDER, CONNECT THE CABLE... ARE YOU USING BRAIDED CABLE SLEEVE? OR THE CABLE IS ALREADY THE WAY IT IS?
Awe man i want that swuirtle steup. Super clean bro. Love the work. Def gonna try to do my own. Do you know where to buy the smaller connecters that are like aviator?
Okay, after maybe a dozen tries, and going through 3 techflexs, i FINALLY got it down. I kept focusing on wrapping it tight, since that's what all the vids focus on, and as someone who trains their grip regularly, and can deadlift 400lbs with no straps, and not even using a hook grip, i didn't understand what i was doping wrong... Well, it was the HEAT. You have to cook the shit out of these things. Practice with some scrap pieces to see how close you can get before the techflex starts melting/burning. And once you find the correct distance, just lay your heat gun/hair dryer on the ground (assuming you have concrete/tile and not carpet or something flammable..), positioned the correct distance from coil, also on the ground, turn on the heat, and leave it on one spot for like 2 minutes- then rotate, heat- rotate, heat -rotate,heat -rotate, heat, and then move down a cm or so, and heat again, with 4 rotation per section, and wallah! I have a dope cable now.
Hey man i just wanna say that this tutorial was really helpful! Just did my first coiled cable this week and you were right about allowing yourself to repeat it multiple times. The first time i did my cord it came out really loose and messy because i only heated it once for around 20 mins. Then i decided to re-do it and this time, i heated it twice at 30 mins each time (I used a hairdryer so it needed more time to heat). But it came out great afterwards!
hey i know im late to this video, but i was wondering if it would work if you just sleeved it with paracord? or will the paracord melt from the heat of the heat gun? Also thanks for making such a great video
what else can i use as a rod? i dont have chopsticks or drum sticks edit: i used a weird flashlight i found in my dads drawer it was werid and long. (thats what she said)
Is there any place where I can buy aviator connectors that are painted in bulk cheaper for example? Purple, red etc. Because I can find only overpriced ones. :D
Awesome video! Can you do a video on how you do the color change in the coil? I've noticed you are not using heat shrink for the transition. If you are using heat shrink is it just on the bottom of the coil and we can not see it?
Hey Cruz, is it possible to re-do a coil on a wire? I coiled my wire with a hair dryer and didn't get as good results as I would have liked and want to give it another round with a heat gun
One thing I didn't noticed or may have missed, but what heat do you set it your heat gun to or temp do you advise to stay within? I know some newer guns have dials where you can change it and then there's guns that are basically set to low & high, what do you use or recommend?
i have a direya dk61 pro and the type c port is on the side and from an aesthetic point it looks nice with the l shape charger it comes with, i want to get 1 of your cabbles do you make them with l shape type c
man this is super helpful. always liked the custom coiled cables, but they are super expensive in shops! but I guess you pay the work that went into it, haha! the cables, connectors, etc. on their own do not cost much, but factor in maybe stuff like soldering iron, extras, working hours etc. and then this is not cheap anymore in principle, although if you are good to go and just have to buy the "ingredients", then you can certainly have it a lot cheaper opposed to commercial ones. I think it will take some time until I am gonna make mine, since I have to stock up on said soldering iron but also other helpful tools (I do not own a heatgun or hair dryer... yeah, I let my hair dry on its own, weird...), but after that gonna look for some great parafilm, cables, connectors, heatshrinks and make me a beautiful custom cable. This is the perfect tutorial for that!
Ive had success with this. Tape one end back down, then twist in the direction it coils to tighten it along the length of the coil. Tape down the other side, and reheat. Good luck
you should learn about what is the Jacket material of the cable? different material has different thermal properties. Some Jacket material is not suitable for Coil cables.and you may damange the cable in appearance or even conductivity.

Loved this video. I've been looking to buy or make cables for Astrophotography. Cable management is tricky and coiled cables could be a solution. I'm looking to make a USB A to USB Micro B cable and it needs to be USB 3.0 Is that possible?
Make sure to spin when your heating (like a chicken on a roast) let it calmly cool down. just touch all parts with a flat hand (backside for safety) to check if it is really hot.

Nice technique but isn't this essentially melting the plastic sheathing around the internal wires? I suppose it's safe enough to do this once but if anyone tries to do it twice to the same cable (to fix some mistake or make a different shape) could they risk shorting the copper strands? (I didn't watch the entire video start to finish, not sure if this was discussed)
The cable I typically use is rated at 80C. I haven't personally had any problems with this process, but I could understand how it can be overdone. The most apparent problem that I could predict would be that the insulation for the individual wires could melt together and cause contact between conductors. I guess your mileage may very depending on what type of cable you're using.

Why don't you reverse the coil at the end, to add "snappiness", like the major cord manufacturers do when producing retractile cords?? If you don't know what I'm referring to, please watch the "How It's Made" episode about Retractile Cords.
Hey man! I love the quality of your vids, they're awesome. I just finished up my first keeb build and got my cable kit from you yesterday, super excited to start working on it! Have a great day man
if your USB Cable jacket is TPU PU or PUR,,that will be better....we can production spiral cable...any specification you wanna....contact me allen@i-flyl.com
Can you do this with ur standard plastic sheath cable, I've found out coiled cables are great for vr when u have a ceiling cable mount set up, but all Amazons are usb 2.0 instead of 3.0, just thought to make my own?
maybe? generally you would do this with a custom cable as some of the stuff like tech flex can actually help hold the cable coil but also it might work. with the hair dryer i’m really not sure, it would take a lot of heating but it might just be possible
I know this might be a weird question but u got the word "mechanical keyboard" in your every video and video title. Cant we apply processes like coiling, sleeving or using gx16, y8 or other connectors on non mechanic standart and rgb gaming keyboards?
To anyone who is interested. You can also bake your cable in the oven between 90-100°C for around 30 min and let it cool down or even "quench" it in the freezer. But let it dry after taking it out of the freezer before using the cable (condensation).
I think I'm going to do this to one of my KDBfan cables ( I have a few), and do like a 3 inch coil on it. I have a heat gun too because I play hockey. So I don't even need to buy one. Thanks for the video.
great tutorial! its kind of important to inverse the coil afterwards to make it more snappy. just the quality of the result depends on the sheathing material thou. I coiled cables with TPE sheathing that were really snappy without even inversing whereas cables with soft PVC became sloppy regardless of the technique used for coiling 🤷
