In this video, I show how to use an HDMI adapter to turn any smartphone or tablet into a desktop digital video magnifier or CCTV. In this example, I'm using a USB type C to HDMI adapter from CHOETECH which allows me to connect my android phone to a television. I'm also using the Modular Metal stand from Modularhose.com to hold the phone above the workspace.
Although I'm using an android phone in this video, this setup can be used with any smartphone or tablet including iPhone or iPad.

This could be a good use for an old smart phone. I was going to use mine to play games but setting this up for my elderly mother sounds like a much better potential solution.

@Unknown Human There are no special parts for this, just a monitor or TV, a phone, a $10 cable, and a way to mount it. It's clear for low level zooms, like 2-3x. Past that, it gets fuzzy on my Samsung phone.

Excellent solution, thanks. Might be a good plan to velcro or zip-tie the cable coming from the adapter to the monitor to the support arm, to strain relieve it. Maybe to the clamp that holds the arm to the table. Otherwise, if you were to catch the cable, best case it would pull the adapter out of the phone, worst case it could damage the socket on the phone or the male connector on the adapter.

Im so thankful to you for WeZoom, and wish I had known about it before buying $1k in devices, since WeZoom can be installed for free in every device you have and for free. I follow all your videos since recently. Be well and safe. With chromecast you cast your screen with the WeZoom ready device without tangled cables .

Great video Sam! I actually tried something similar and what I found about my pixel is that it doesn't support HDMI out. Apparently it doesn't have driver or something. Sigh. But I do use it with Chromecast and the latency is n't too bad actually! As long as the Wi-Fi is good.

If you use Screen Mirroring its even easier.VisionAssist is a great for iOS as well.
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 4 года назад
Yes, however, you will need some kind of program, smart TV, or a device such as Apple TV, Roku, etc. i’ve made a video featuring screen mirroring before but wanted to show how to do this with just a basic television, no extras other than the adapter.

Good advice Sam. Tried the WeZoom app and found it to be very blurry. I have now installed the - Magnifier by Studio360Apps. It is the one with the plus sign in the circle. it is really clear. I've also got the Pixel 4XL, so it does have a excellent camera.

Did you try touching the screen to focus the app? It doesn’t auto focus, you need to touch to focus. Either way though, glad you were able to find one that works for you!

@theblindlife

You would just need to get an adapter for whatever video port the PC screen has. Probably VGA.

Hey there. Got a quesion for you. I have a CCTV I made using a camcorder hooked to my monitors arm. I have been using it direct to the monitor with a switch so the monitor can do double duty between cctv and computer. I ordered a capture card and I am wondering if you know of any webcam or camera software to apply high contrast filters to the incoming video. (reverse color would be ideal). I have been trying to find something. THe path I am onright now seem to be leading me to OBS webcam software and finding or finding out how to make LUTS filters. Wondering if you might know of something. THis is on WIndows. Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your content.

I love this idea. I tried to do this with my IOS phone but it's not working. I'm using the teh magnifier found on the apple store, and it didn't not work at all. Any ideas on how I could make it work for me?
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 3 года назад
There could be several reasons. Is it displaying anything on the screen? Maybe the adapter you’re using isn’t correct. Maybe the particular app you’re using doesn’t support this. You could try using a different app.

😅6 Hello Sam! I’m looking at this video, I know it’s two years old and I’m wondering if there’s an update to it. I do need very much a DIY version of the CCTV, as I can’t afford the $3000 for the real thing. I tried to download the WEZO app but it’s not available anymore… Hope you can help me maybe there is a cheaper version that does just the basics like a portable light way CCTV? I could probably afford about $1000 for it. Thanks again my friend

How do I install the app and get the adapter to make the digital cctv on my iPad because my iPad only support the lightning do not have the USBC
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 4 года назад
The app that I used in the video is not available for iOS. However, there are lots of Magnifier apps that you could try. I would just search on Amazon for a lightning to HDMI adapter. You should find lots of choices.

Can you have the same kind of set up to use on an iPhone or iPad?😎
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 3 года назад
Yes, absolutely. You just need to find an adapter that works with your device. It shouldn’t be difficult, they sell tons of them on Amazon.
@michalgierszewski8610
@michalgierszewski8610 4 года назад
thanks for great video. This adapter you are talking is transferring video signal form smartphone to TV. Do you know any device hat transfer video signal in opposite direction? to use a smartphone as a tv screen? I'm trying to connect a camera output to a smartphone so I could easily see settings on the camera. I found some easycap video grabber devices (to trensfer old VHS cassettes into AVI fies) some of them are working with smartphones. This work around solution may work with analog signal but I'm looking for something to work with digital HDMI signal. What devices are you using to set up your cameras?
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 4 года назад
For my Merralis camera are use a mini USB to HDMI cable. This I plug into a TV and it displays my camera feed on to the television. Perhaps you could use an adapter that would allow you to plug the HDMI cable into your phone. I also plug the camera into a capture card which then allows me to plug it into my computer. This lets me use my Merralis camera as a WebCam. The capture card Connect to the computer via USB. Perhaps you could plug the capture card into your smart phone using an adapter. For android, they are called OTG cables, on the go cable. I have never tried any of this so not entirely sure if it would work or not.
