If you own the BlackMagic URSA cameras or the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II then you know how expensive it is right now to get enough storage. These are some of the latest cameras that also use the latest tech in portable storage; the CFast 2.0 cards. Usually whatever is the newest is also the most expensive. But don't worry, there is a way to cheat your camera into thinking you are using expensive CFast 2.0 cards when in fact you are recording to a cheap and easy to get SSD (solid state drive). I did a video below to show you how to do it yourself for less than a $100 (plus the cost of your SSD). Also I provide the links where you can buy the necessary part to build this.

This is amazing. One of the main issues that put the camera out of my budget range was the CFAST cards. Now I can just hand off the drive to the client like this as an additional DIT service. Thank you!

I've been using this exact same setup. All the components minus the SSD can be purchased for $100 ish. I also bought velcro adhesive so my SSD enclosure is attached directly to my battery. Much better and cheaper than C-Fast cards. Great video Tom. -Jason

maybe a little late, but try using the other cfast-slot on the ursa. this is some weird behaviour others have experienced. might do the trick for you

Awesome tip! I've seen it before but you did it better. I'd be curious to see if we could find an enclosure that simplifies it even more with no need to velcro it. just pop it in and out.

Hey Tom! So glad I found you! I produced a film last year and inherited the URSA mini. I love it for so many reason, not the least of which is because I’m almost 50 and need the big buttons. Ha! Anyway I’m devouring all your videos on this camera (thank you so much!!) and just wondering if the gear list here is current? I see the Samsung drive you list records in 6mb/sec but found a few new Samsung models with the same recording rate for quite a bit less. Would the still work? Thanks again!

Nice work around Tom, thanks for the tips. But I sure wish Blackmagic stayed with the SSD recording they had with the production camera. Made life simple and cheap. I guess to shoot a long event (concert etc) can this SSD adaptor take the larger 1 and 2 terabyte cards ?

Hi Tom really enjoy your videos. Can you record raw with just one Cfast card cable? I thought you needed the two slots of the Cfast cards because it records in both while doing raw. If you can do it with just one it would be great, it was something I never understood in videos from other people and something that was keeping me away from buying it.

This worked great BUT I have a quick question: is there any way to test if your SSD is dropping frames other than "visual inspection". For example: If I were to record a full RAW / LOSSLESS test of a static shot how would I know if it is dropping frames? Will the camera throw an error? or will Resolve? or is there another program to check it with?

I tried it with URSA Mini G2 but with no luck. (Perhaps more modern versions won't allow anyone have any experience here?). Grt video though. Always enjoy your channel.

I just got my UMP today along with the items needed for this setup (using Samsung 860 EVO 1TB). This setup appears to be working fine in the CFast slot 2 but won't record more than a few seconds in any codec when using slot 1. Any thoughts or suggestions?

No dropped frames at all here with an EVO 850 -- even in 4.6K RAW (you know, you can set the URSA to stop recording when dropped frames occur -- it never came to that so far).

@tom antos, I’m going to want to do the same thing with the black magic pocket cinema camera 6k when it comes in. Please recommend drives that will be compatible for this and how I can set it up. Something that will give me a good amount of record time and will give me the best value for my dollar and won’t bog down during slow motion. Thank you in advance.

It's an interesting solution but adding the extra vertical bulk seem to defeat some purpose of keeping it small. Rigging it according to specific scenario should be the best way forward.

Hello, one question. I have the same system to use with my blackmagic and recently i had a problem in wich it didn't recognise the disc and it came "format the card", when i plugged it to the computer it didn't recognise the disc either and i can't take out the information, did you ever had a problem for directly copying into the disc? Or what is the correct use for the disc to not have any inconvinience. Thank you for uploading this kind of videos, i would appreciate it if you could help me.

So I don't know if my computer lanes are jacked up but whenever I'm transferring Raw to any hard drive, it only transfers at 33MB/s... is there something wrong with my computer or is that normal?

Hey Tom... If I have an Atomos Ninja Flame, that has no SDI. Can I just get an SDI to HDMI (from like BlackMagic) adapter and be able to record on the Ninja Flame and still be able to bypass the CFast Cards. Thanks

Ben Holden I connect the USB 3.0 cable to my computer and edit right off the drive. in davinci Resolve I can import all the footage formats the camera can record. if I want to use Adobe premiere then I export from resolve all the footage in DNxHR codec

Not sure this works on Canon cameras that have a door that NEEDS to be closed in order for the switch to recognize a card. Unless there is another cfast to esata cable I am not aware of .

Are there any adapters available for SD cards? I assume I will need a controller in between for something like this, since SD Cards use the USB controller, not SATA.

So far as I know, that's not possible. The 7D has a CF interface, the URSA has a CFast interface. You know -- these are two different things. CF cards are not nearly as expensive as CFast ones -- so simply buy a biga$$ CF card for your RAWs! ;)

Hi Tom, I am a faithful follower. Please I wanted to consult you that I have followed all the advice, I have a problem with my ssd system and the ursa mini 4.6k camera, I have everything connected correctly but only recordings 1 minute maximum, it stops recording and does not detect any card. Do you think that it may be because I am using a 1TB SSD in 500gb vbez, it may not support 1tb? Thanks a lot
