For those of you asking about a sealer. Earth Safe Finishes sells a sealer that is safe for the candlemaking process. It's $18.95 for 8 ounces. Larger sizes are available. Wickid Candle uses Cheng Concrete Sealer, available on Amazon for $32.95 for a 17 ounce bottle.
Just wondering, wouldn't it be easier on your arms and you would get a better mix using say a small paint stirrer which you can attach to an electric drill? I reckon over a period of time it would save you a ton of time as well.
Hi! I actually do use my drill with a stirring attachment for larger orders. However in my opinion for smaller orders I find the paint stick to be more efficient and easier cleanup :) but everyone is different so whatever works for that person works
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.
I so didn’t know you can just use paint! I’ve used plaster as a lightener before then added red paint but the vessel was too light weight for my liking. Now I started using titanium dioxide and a bunch of paint and it’s too tedious to get the right measurements without wasting too much product. Thank you so much for this video!!!!!
the first one i tried was with regular concrete and it didn't work. second one was with the same cement you use and the results was awesome, so excited thx you
Thank you so much for your videos😊 I have tried these and made video and they came out awesome. 🙏🏽🙏🏽 creating a Candle Business and this will be a great touch to add 🌹
Omg thank you so much for this video!! I'm starting a candle business this year and where I live its very hard to find candle jars that are not expensive and whenever I want to order jars online the shipping ends up costing more than the jars.
Great video !!! I was wondering how to add color to concrete. It was impossible for me for find those fancy colored pigments. Keep up your good work :)
Thanks for this awesome video. I’ve been trying to work with cement, I’m not sure why but a lot of my projects crumble. I’ve been watching you to try to troubleshoot my procedures. You do beautiful artwork.
crumbly concrete is either too much or not enough water. cement curing is a exothermic chemical reaction. the water is the catalyst. Don't think of cement as "drying out" like mud. not enough water will cause it to cure unevenly and crack. too much water can cause the components to "go off" before they have made good bonds with neighboring particles, which makes it turn to coarse sand powder at the slightest touch
Can you link the polymer coat that you used please on the concrete jars and what are the names of the rose colored the acrylic paint you used? Loved the rose colored one 😍🥰
Your vessels are so pretty, they don't look like what I would think a cement/concrete jar would look like. I'm going to give cement a try! I'm curious, how heavy are they? And do you polish them at all?
Love this idea. Looking forward to make these as wedding favors for our wedding. About how many candles are you able to make from a 55lb cement all bag? Thanks in advance ☺
How fun!! That'll be pretty! It depends on the mold. If you go to the mold on amazon in the description it will say how much the mold holds. I hope that helps!
I have been studying your videos for my own candle business and omg you have been so helpful!!! How do you ship you candles in the summer with your concrete jars?
Hi! I actually am testing the shipping out in the summer since I live in AZ 🌵☀️ I currently don't ship during the summer but I am testing out shipping some with some special material. So if it works I'll definitely post about it! :)
Soy candles are made from soybeans and most store bought candles (if they don't say soy, coconut, etc) is made from paraffin (petroleum). Some people can have respiratory issues while burning normal candles with paraffin wax. With soy wax there are no additives so it doesn't bother a lot of people. :) There are a lot of benefits. I will be posting a new video with this soon!
I got excited and went and bought a 48 piece set! I used the same color you did and it did nothing. It became really thick right away and I had to add more water but still no color. What am I doing wrong??
I have noticed some brands do not perform the same as others. Did you use the same brand as I did? I use Craftsmart. I would try adding more water or try out concrete pigments from Direct Colors :)
Hi I have the cylinder mold I’m having a lot of trouble getting a pot out of the mold. I have tried lots of different mixes.... is there a trick to getting this mold off please..... love your videos by the way.....
It can be tricky at first for sure! I usually rolls the sides down with my hands and then pull it over the lip on the bottom. The rolling of the sides seem to help me :)
Thank you for nice videos. I was wondering if the polycrylic is for making your jar waterproof? And how do you ensure that your label stays on the cement? Thank you in advance for your answers 😘
I put my labels on the bottom. I haven't had any issues with them coming off. It sticks to the sealant. Polycrylic does seem to be waterproof from my testing. But make sure you always do your own testing :)
Yes it will. I have heard of people having the wicks come unglued due to the heat of the wax when the candle is burned closer to the bottom but i have tried it and it worked for me :)
I love your containers! You’re such an inspiration! Thank for explaining in such detail! I am wondering about your sealant...it looks amazing it sounds like it works like a dream...I know you’ve tested it with your candle flames and a heat gun, what I’m wondering is when the sealant heats up due to the burning candle, does it give off any dangerous fumes? How would you test that or find out about that?
Hi Jennifer, Good question! So other than the flame test I also tested my candles while they were burning. Once the candle is burned all the way through you can still see the sealant on the inside of the candle. The wax I use is 100% soy wax so it has a low temperature of melting (it doesn't get as hot as normal paraffin candles). So the sealant is not seeping into the candle and releasing into the air :) A lot more research went into why I chose Polycrylic but I hope that helps answer your question :) thanks for watching!
It is. I have been using polycrylic for over a year now, no issues. I've also tested it against and heat and the sealant was staying on the concrete not going into the air or wax. I use 100% soy wax as well so it has a lower melting temp. Hope that helps
I really love the idea/look of making my own.. but if my candle business were to really take off, there’s no way I could make my own. I just don’t see how people who sell 100+ candles a month has time to make all their vessels like that 🤣. But I love watching people make their own ceramic vessels
Hi! It definitely takes a bit more time. I started since my containers kept getting marked out of stock and I needed something more reliable. I purchase multiple molds to help with time ;)
hey i noticed your candles didn't cave in on top after it dried! How?!!! Mine always do that, and i have to melt it again....it never works well after that!
Oh I forgot about those! Thank you for reminding me. I use a black pair of wick trimmers found on amazon. I have also just used scissors. If they are just cotton wicks you can use strong scissors :)
Question, after you use the sealer and you make the candle, does your candle wax seam through the concrete or does the sealant protect that from happening? thats my issue with my candles, once it starts burning the wax goes through the cement and i can see it from the outside
Personally it took a lot of trial and error to not have that happen. In my opinion it's a combo of your concrete mixture for the container, the sealant and how it was applied, and also the type of wax you use and fragrance oil. Just keep resting new things and you will find your perfect combination
Hello, a question, I also use I am 464 and the fragrances of candle science, if you do not use a container with a lid, does it keep the fragrance the same? I have that question if I can use containers without a lid
Hi! I think the Amazon link for the molds is incorrect. I went to order them and it's nothing like what is here. Maybe im crazy though lol. Thank you for the help!
Hi! That is strange. I just checked to make sure the links were going to the right place and on my end they are. You can always search silicone mold for planters in amazon and that will bring up some too :)
Hi! The wax could seep into the container and cause it to leak or crack. I would highly recommend sealing. I just did a new video today on sealing containers - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-91bsZAgU8yo.html
Hi. Thanks for watching! If I am doing wholesale some stores like dust covers otherwise currently my candles do not have lids. We are working on molds with lids though for future lines!
Heyy, thanks for all of these videos. You're truly helping me be more motivated and confident. i would like to know your thoughts on the polycrylic aerosol spray? Do you think it will work the same?
I wonder if you do wholesale? If so - it must take ages for you to make the jars and then also candles 😍 also how do you attach a label? Does it stick?
Thank you for sharing. I created four vessels and noticed two had a lot of air bubbles. What’s the best method to avoid this? I tapped the silicone several times after pouring, but I guess I didn’t tap enough? Any advice would be grateful. Thank you ❤️
What material did you use for the concrete? acrylic? and it's just cement 'I'm from Argentina and I wanted to get the materials. Thank you! nice project
In the video I show what I use :) acrylic paint. Cement All is concrete - you will want to make sure you use concrete and not pure cement. Hope that helps!
This is so awesome - I have started my own candle business as well and wanted to try this out ! How many cement molds do you typically get out of a 25 lb of cement all . Like the smaller molds ?
I personally pour when I can comfortably place my hands on the jug without burning them obviously, I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 and I think my pour temp would be approx 45*c - 55*c (113*F - 131*F)
Hi! I don't share my personal costs of products however I can tell you that I can make about 75-80 cylinders with a 55 lb bag of cement all. Now the cost all depends on fragrance, how much fragrance you use, wicks, labels, shipping costs, etc. :) Hope this helps!
Love the video. However, I made a vessel and when I poured the wax inside, the vessel was really warm. I'm afraid to light it. Do your candle vessels get extremely hot when burning?
I decided I liked the choice of colors with the acrylic paint. It worked really well with marbling and coloring the concrete :) powder I don't recommend because it soaks up into the concrete. Liquid is definitely the way to go.
@@WizeOwlCandles I'd honestly never heard of it. Such a great idea with the amount of colours to choose from vs cement dyes. I'll be trying this out over the weekend for sure! :)
I don't have an exact amount personally as I use the solo cups to measure. However on each mold on Amazon they have a measurement to fill each candle mold. I use 3:1 ratio 3 parts cement all and 1 part water
@@WizeOwlCandles sorry, my fault! I was wondering if the high temperature of the candle wick may increase the probability of cracking the concrete jar.
@@fabiojean9215 it does, this is why it is important to test :) so the consistency of the concrete, the type of wax you are using for the candle, the wick, and the selants all take a part
@@WizeOwlCandles Thank you :) I'm not sure about the selants that I can use for it. The one you mention in your video is not on the market in my country :(
I want to make my own candle jars but don’t want them to be too heavy. Do you know of any other material that can be used to make candle jars? If there is can you make a tutorial using those products please? I love how you do your tutorials, you are very step by step. Any info will be greatly appreciated it
I wouldn't say more safe but they are definitely safe to use. I have heard of glass candles shattering and I haven't heard of concrete candles doing that :)
Hi! I actually talk about my wicks in this video :) feel free to skip to 11:04 in the video. I am currently in the process of breaking up this video into smallwer chunks with different containers!
I have a question regarding the wicks . How do you know what size to get ? I have the same cylinder mold you use but I just ordered the wicks you suggested on Amazon, will those work for the cylinder? I haven’t made candles before so it’s all new to me. I know I read test the wicks but would you have to buy numerous sizes and refill the container over and over till you find the wick that works? It’s just a little confusing on knowing what size to use. Any help with this would be appreciated
I usually don't use Wicks off Amazon I only order from candlescience. They have a wick guide on candlescience website that shows you which Wick works for your container :)
