We are a husband and wife building a modern house by ourselves on a SUPER tight budget! In this episode, we talk about how we DIY our sealed concrete floors, installed our interior doors, and built a two-story concrete clad fireplace.
We also explain how much each step of building our house costs , where the money is coming from, and how much money we are saving by doing some of the work ourselves. SPOILER ALERT: We saved A LOT of money in this one!

I like the Fireplace the whole build, Electric or not. Looks very expensive so it does add value to the overall interior decor. If you add a wide flat display Panel on top of that wall, it will look smashing. Some of the Video shots have Mono instead of Stereo Audio.

1. Door Stud tool is GENIUS. 2. Thanks for the Concreate link, I've sent it to a couple designers I work with. Sweet product. And 3. As a DIY myself, I always tape my caulk joints for a professional finish, it makes a pro of a bumbling klutz instantly. Takes a few more minutes but once you goof up a single caulk joint & have to redo...

I like what you did, I would recommend that you do 2 coats initially and then after the walls are completed, use a red pad for cleaning the sealer, then add 2 to 3 more coats after it's all done and then buff with a high speed buffer. If you get standing water on the sealer it will need to be refinished, but I like the look with no stain.

I am from the midwest, personally hate electric fireplaces, think they look super tacky and theres no point to them besides visual, but from your perspective in arizona, there's really no point in investing in a gas one, so I see how that would make sense while giving the living room a purpose. We invested in a 72 inch gas fireplace and look froward to using it extremely often, probably every day in the winter months.

Thanks for the video! Dude I swear we are close on designs. I’m taking out my big walk in shower fiberglass and doing a curbless shower with a linear drain at the opening so no door or glass wide open. Whole bath is going to be concrete floors and concrete walls in the shower. Thinking about 1 long concrete countertop and built in wedge sink. Midway in the sink I want to make the mold so it notches out a square on either side so I can place a teak or bamboo across it for a little counter top. And I’m doing a 2 story concrete skimmed fireplace, but I’m putting a shelf about 12ft up to set a cafe racer up there!!!!

The Door Studs are a great thing. I only wish I had a set of them when installing our interior doors. 1930s-era glass pane doors that weigh about 120lbs each. I suppose if I ever need to do maintenance, it would still be worth have a pair.

Awesome! You guys are doing great on this build. It would be nice to see what the running cost per s.f. is costing you, also your sweat equity hous as well. At end of the project you can assigned an amount per hour, and don't forget you also need an amount for managing the project. By the way, with what you have spent, given the size of the house you are doing a tremendous job staying close to budget. (For the House build)

As a mason......don't go gas....save your money and go with solid masonry. Even running gas in it (arizona-firewood availability? ), its always a much better value because of convection. Here in georgia, I built a six foot wide chimney, about 5-6 years ago, for a former chemistry teacher of mine. I saw her the next year after we had a winter storm where we lost power for a week she said they only burnt about a fire a day and it didnt drop below 70 degrees the whole week.
