// D I Y - C U S T O M C U P S
I’m BACK and ready to upload all of this DIY content I’ve held hostage - Starting with the custom cups that were a HIT. Literally perfect for any event, easy to create, + budget friendly.
I hope this tutorial helps with learning how to work with waterslide paper. You can use it on pretty much any surface from plastic, glass, acrylic and more. I’ve listed the steps below with tips I wasn’t able to mention in the video.
Like, share, and comment if this was helpful, and let me know what you’d like to see next!
// L I S T O F M A T E R I A L S:
- Waterslide paper (Michaels or Amazon)
- Inkjet printer
- Acrylic spray - Gloss finish (Hobby Lobby)
- Scissors
- Sealant spray (acrylic sealant, clear enamel, or resin)
- Container of cold/room temp water
- Papertowels
// L I S T O F S T E P S:
1. CREATE YOUR DESIGN: Use Canva or whatever you’d like to create your design with an image, quote, whatever you’d like.
2. PRINT IMAGES: Using an inkjet printer (only), print the images. Make sure the paper size aligns with the printer settings. Only print on the shiny side, and make sure to read the waterslide directions that are provided. (All brands require different settings)
3. SEAL WITH ACRYLIC: Spray paint outside or in a ventilated area with the acrylic spray paint. Side to side, and ensure a full coating on each image. Let dry FLAT and apply second coating if needed. Let dry completely, it will be sticky if it needs more time.
4. CUT IMAGES: Cut each picture with a little space around every edge just in case of any errors.
5. WET AND SLIDE IMAGE ONTO CUP: Dip image in water, submerging completely for the amount of time that is provided on the waterslide instructions. You will feel the back of the image begin to loosen. Wet cup where you’ll place the image. Slide onto cup gently and adjust to your liking.
6. PAT DRY AND REMOVE BUBBLES: Use a clean paper towel to pat the image dry. Do not rub. Remove bubbles by smoothing the image out gently with thumbs.
7. LET DRY: Make sure image drys at least 10 - 24 hours. Always check for any water drops and dry immediately.
8. APPLY SEALANT: Cover the rim and inside of cup with paper towels or clean cloth and spray sealant on the outside of the image and cup. Let dry 24 hours minimum, and add as many coats as you’d like. *FOR RESIN: See tutorial or directions on how to apply resin to cup for a permanent coating.
// T I P S :
- Trial and error FOR SURE. I messed up numerous times but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy.
- If you get a small fold or tear on the image, just make sure it is wet so you can manipulate and adjust.
- These are not permanent and shouldn’t be used for soaking, rough washing, or dishwasher use. You can seal with a food safe resin that will create a permanent finish.
- When sealing the cups, try to cover the rim and inside the cup.
- You can use colored cups, but the images will show vividly on a white background.
Stay tuned to see how you can use waterslide paper on acrylic signage for a DIY Acrylic Sign tutorial. Calling all the Cricut users!
