Do you want a simple and cheap solution to measure the rpms on your tesla turbine?
No?
Well, that was a little bit specific but if you like DIY projects, 3d printing, science and a smidge of engineering, stick around.
This video is a follow up to my last video on how to 3d print a simple design for a Tesla turbine. This video is also the second of a 5 videos series I’m working on.
The next one will be about the boundary layer effect.

hey, just some tips for soldering: you did great but use more flux, if you have flux core solder, don't directly put it on the iron, put the iron on the part you're trying to solder, then add the solder. if it's solder without a flux core, put some solder on the iron as you did, and put some flux on the part and then touch the two. will work great.

You need to work out "poor person tactics", as I call it. Having two flywheels with equal masses of about maybe 1hg the motor should only need to sorry about absolute elevation of the "kinetic bank", and the total angular inertia should be some inertia h, and with more kinetic energy per velocity means the total power transmission (from air to rotation) should continue smoothly for longer before the velocity jamming comes into effect. The trade-off is then the increased friction on the bottom part of the axis's primary support points, hence the hectogram, but maybe kg could do if it's strong enough

I don't know too much about compressors but could you start a test with different types of pressure: from 0,2 bar to about 8bar? I don't know what is your max. Pressure. Run the turbine from 0,2-8bar in 0,1bar stepps and measure the speed for about 2-5 minutes.

I believe you switched open and closed around. Open is 0, closed is 1. An open switch is when there's no contact between the 2 poles, a closed switch is when there is. For optical switches this becomes open = obstructed, closed = unobstructed. Good vid tho, quite entertaining.
@integza
@integza 5 лет назад
I'm aware that 0 means open loop and 1 is a closed loop. I just reversed the names because I thought it would be more intuitive for the viewer. The code is alright though. Even if I switched the signals it would be alright because there's an equal amount of "closed" and "opened" per cycle. Thank you so much for the compliment :D

I wonder if you could print spacers to set the spacing between the plates. I wonder how hard it would be to cut the turbine plates out of metal... they're far from complicated! Oh, and I wouldn't write off the frequency-amplitude plot in audacity too quickly - remember that the amplitude is displayed logarithmically, so a small difference in the height of the peaks is actually a large difference in absolute amplitude! You should check to see whether it actually matches up, now that you have your arduino tachometer :)
@integza
@integza 5 лет назад
Hi shoofle ! Thank you for the help :D I like the spacers idea but I'm trying to stay away from metal discs, they're quite heavy to be pushed by air. I was thinking about trying with carbon fiber or polycarbonate. You're right about the audio method, I should've done more research.

You might've been able to use the audio method if you did a recording while holding the shaft still, and a recording with the tape hitting your finger. Then in audacity you could have used the "Noise Removal" effect. Use the recording with the shaft being held still as the "Noise Profile" and then use that profile to remove the white-ish noise from the recording with the tape hitting your finger.
@integza
@integza 5 лет назад
I did use my finger and I used the noise removal effect but the air and the turbine do a noise with a big amplitude. But I need to try that again.

HE LITERALLY SHOWS IN A LATER VIDEO (id: eBlI6OQ-i3s) THAT THIS DOESN'T WORK. He tests his arduino tachometer later on in a video titled "3D Printing a 106 Years Old Invention - Testing the DT2234C" and demonstrates that his arduino readings are WAY off. I suspect he didn't take into account the arduino's super low refresh rate, a teensy is probably better suited.

@justaguy6100
@justaguy6100 4 года назад
Zo, on the turbine and your need for speed. It would seem that the torque is woefully inadequate for just about anything really. Do you hope to get enough speed to gear it down to where you can actually find an application beyond justifying ultimately (because you know you will) getting a fancy digital photo tachometer? Not that that's NOT a worthwhile goal as well ;-) Color me envious, so green would be appropriate then.

I know I'm late to the game, but I'm assuming the code has a variable.for number of interruptions per rotation? If it's just counting the interruptions then obviously the speed will be half that measured.

you could fix your soldering skills by: 1. not bringing solder on the tip rather heating the pad then pressing solder wire on the pad 2. flux, lots of flux 3. clean your tip pls
@tristunalekzander5608
@tristunalekzander5608 4 года назад
Many people don't know this, get a new soldering iron and before ever using it, look up how to "tin" the tip. Also, get a thing of flux and put it on everything, including your soldering iron, before applying solder. Your soldering iron tip should be shiny with a layer of solder covering it always. Solder should stick to the tip very easily. I struggled with soldering like you too before taking these very simple steps, now I am the solder king.
@velwheel3135
@velwheel3135 4 года назад
The speed of the wheel (rpm) is not an indication of the power that this turbine can deliver. Also, bearings are a weakness for high RPM. Try connecting the turbine to a motor which can be used as a generator, then the useful work the turbine produces can be measured. Good project.

you're soldering wrong! you don't put the solder on the iron first. well, you put a runny amount so it transfers heat, but you use the iron to heat up the joint and then you apply the solder to the joint so it melts in place. remove the solder and then the iron.

I know this video is quite old by now, but here are some thoughts regarding the acoustic rpm measurements: there is a free android app, spectroid, that's pretty good for frequency analysis + it might help to attach the microphone directly to the turbine casing, so it picks up the vibrations (so if you're using a phone, just tape the headset mic to it)

The smaller and lighter the propeller, the faster it will rotate. You will need to invest less energy to rotate it and it will also have less friction with the air. In addition you will try to create a new model with an exit only on one side because there is still an air pocket that lowers the maximum speed. It would be nice to see if the shape of the compressor nozzle also affects the speed, like its thickness or the air pressure it puts out
