Branching Balance that’s true. I ended up doing the grooming and it took about 3 hours for washing, shaving, clipping his nails and cleaning out his ears. But honestly i think i might continue doing it myself with the help of a little sedation pills lol
I'm a groomer of 10+ years & do weekly grooming videos on RU-vid. (I try to give positive criticism). Grooming is expensive & not easy to do at home, you have wonderful dog(s) to do this on! I tell everyone: Dry the dog 100% completely-- then use a de-shed/undercoat rake before shaving. Both drying & brushing will help guide a trimmer/clipper easier through their hair. I do use your "pinching" technique daily--but only when hair is completely DRY. When clipping through wet/damp hair, Clipper & Blade may get gunked up with wet hair. Touch ups can be seen quicker when the dog is fully dry. Great dog to show on video!
@@nubiaavalos8430 I got the notification- and don't want to step on any toes. As this is not my channel. Let me know if this question is to myself or that channel
@@nubiaavalos8430 It is all your choice, it's what works best for you and the dog. Cut before wash will help on dry time, but after drying it will show hair that wasn't clean enough to be cut, so you have to go over it again. For Golden retrievers, I recommend to wash, dry 120% then cut. Hope it helps =)
It comes with time, my dogs used to bite and wiggle, trying to escape 🙈 but eventually they got used to it and stopped resisting ☺️ having treats handy really helps the process 😉
I recommend shield K9 or McCann dogs or Zak George (they all use the same technique but show it in different ways so it makes it easier to understand)❤️
There are pads you can buy for the bathroom to put peanut butter on it while grooming your dog. The peanut butter helps keep them distracted and easier to groom
Pro tip: Golden Retrievers should never be shaved, even with a guard, unless there is a medical necessity for shaving. Goldens have a double down coat. The under layer keeps them insulated from heat and cold, the outer layer is longer and tougher and is water resistant. Therefore, their fur should never be shaved. Ever. Especially right before Winter. Also, you should never use clippers on wet fur. It causes hot spots, pulling and pinching. All grooming should be be done before the bathe and once the dog is COMPLETELY dry clean up any rough looking areas.
Thank you for your feedback. However, this is not a golden retriever but a golden doodle. His hair is very similar to a poodle and our vet didn't have any issues with his haircut, I made sure I checked since he's got a mixed heritage. Thank you for interesting information and explanations tho! Knowledge sharing is always welcome here 🐕 🐩
Our vet also thinks it’s completely fine because our dogs are inside dogs. In theory, yes they need their double down. However dogs have been kept inside longer and longer and their shedding patterns no longer match the weather or season since we have heating and air conditioning! Lol I love this video, it’s super helpful and informative ☺️
Excellent instructions with the use of arrows to indicate the direction of cutting. This will be an outside job for me, if I used the kitchen, my wife would use those sheers on me!
I liked. In Quarantine and need to trim my dogs. My only issue is with trimming them while the hair is wet, seems to pull on the skin a lot more. Perhaps dry first?
I think it depends on how thick/thin your dog's hair is + its breed etc.. For my dogs I give them a good wipe with a towel so that hair is only about 75% wet 🐕
I'm about to groom my dog with help for the first time in a while, and hopefully after I desensitize him to the tools, I can use these techniques! Thank you!
I can here due to the Coronavirus lock down which forced my regular groomer to close but when she reopened, she stopped grooming large dogs. Mine is a lab/retriever/border collie mix at 56 pounds. This was so very helpful! So informative. I feel like I can actually do this now. Plus, my dog would literally go into shaking fits and cry and cry to get groomed and this takes the stress off of him now. Thanks so much!
You explain very well and I am very grateful for the video, I started from scratch to cut my dog and some excellent and very fast internet courses that helped me a lot, thanks to those classes and watching videos of you and others I was able to start my business and I is giving very good results !!! great video and hits
Wow you did a great job here. I just dont understand why would work on him with wet fur. That's my only thing. I have a Goldendor Golden + Lab Mix and he inhered both fur type for his parents. This video has taught me a thing or two about grooming this breed.
been trimming our portugese waterdog for a couple years now (time flies) but she still always looks like a pack of rats chewed the fur off for a few days after the trim. figured watching a few vids on how to actually use the trimmer might help. this was very clear and informative! trimming her on the table instead of the floor alone will probably make a great difference (for my back if not her looks)
Awe!! He is such a good boy!! 😊🥰 Great video. I like the diagrams with the direction of the cuts. Would’ve liked to know what number you used on each part of the body. I’m going to try this on my dog. I was going about it all wrong. 🤦🏼♀️ My poor girl looks uh…. Not very good. 😒 But the shorter fur is so much easier to find ticks on her!!! I just found 13 ticks on myself today and I wasn’t even the one laying in the grass all day!! So I’m excited about this for the summer. She’s older now and my late dog seemed so much happier when I shaved her toward the end of her life. So it’s time to shave my girl following your video and see how it goes. Thank you for this video. 😀🐾
Thank you! This is the best video I certainly found. Is it better to trim them wet (damp) or dry? I use to get my 2 trimmed for the summer on recommendation of my vet to control hot spots. They spent a lot of time in the water.
Thank you! :) I am not sure how well hair grows back after a short haircut like this one on ALL breeds, but on poodle mixes it grows back within 2-3 months
The professional groomer I use for my dogs says that they never wash the dogs before the brush them. She says that you should always use the dematting and detangler tools first. The brush the entire dog. Then bathed then dry. Then cut clippers and if there are still some matted areas that the clippers won’t pass through, you can use scissors. Then clippers.
very true, if your dog's hair gets tangled you don't want to pull on the tangle. My dogs' hair never tangles. Go off your individual dog needs, they are all different
Looks just like our goldendoodle, definitely more of the retriever gene, does he shed a lot? Our house is covered in hair, I have to hoover twice a day
Yes, more of the retriever there but shedding isn't bad at all! If I cut their hair short (like in my video), no hair at all for a few months. If I keep it growing long, then my saving grace is my neato robot vac daily + using a de-shedding brush once a month
My doodle loves me cutting his hair. When I turn the clippers on, he comes running BUT he hates getting his nails clipped or drilled down, he hates it and fights me!
Can you please tell me where you got your dog? I want a golden doodle just like this that looks like a golden retriever, but am having a lot of trouble finding them. Thank you!!!!!!!!
Great video! Quarantine got me DIY as well... one question though, what about the tail? I see that on yours, you choose to keep it as is but would u use clippers or scissors on it? And how do I not end up with it looking like a pool-noodlee?
Haha good question😊 and thanks for watching! I use scissors if I feel like the tail is way too bushy. I cut short right near the bum. The rest I leave as is
This is amazing im going to groom my 2 tomorrow!!😍 does this method work with cavaliers? Also do you have a tutorial on how to clip claws? That's the bit I'm worried about :/
I only used this method on golden doodles but I think I can do the same on my Brittany, except that I won't be cutting hair on back and head. Sorry no claws, my least favourite part too ))
Since my dogs are a mix of poodle+golden+great Pyrenees I wasn't sure what's appropriate, so I have consulted with my vet. He said for my dogs's coats it is fine. So if in doubt - consult a professional 🐕 🐩
What a sweet gang! Lady, baby, doggie🥰 I really enjoyed this video and you really did a great job. And your doggie was so good through the whole thing! What a sweetie pie🥰
I don't have any experience with cutting snout hair but when I want to trim my dogs' tails, I use scissors. I have two types, regular scissors for hair cuts (very sharp) and scissors that look like two combs (to even out straight lines). Hope this helps! 🙂
I want to start cutting my dogs hair; my question is for thick haired dog (she's small) would it be ok to start with a higher sized attachment to eliminate the thick coarse area then work down to a number one?
Personally I only use attachment 1, just because I feel that it’s quicker that way. Plus I want their hair very short. The red dog in my video, Hunter, he got thick top coat and 1 under coat and it’s pretty easy to cut it. My blonde one, Stella, she got a very thick top coat and several layers of undercoat. So it takes much longer, going over and over the same spot 🙂 basically the more under coats dog has - the longer it will take
Well it looks easy but my dog won't keep still even when I brush her hair. But am definitely going to give her a haircut. She needs it real bad.Or should I say, she needs it real 👍 good.Thanx !!!
🤦🏻♀️ oops. I should've watched this video before I tried grooming my dog for the very first time. Now she has to live with her bad haircut for a while.
First time I tried to cut my dog's hair I have really messed up and was horrified that he will look silly for a long time but it literally took a week or so and his hair naturally evened out 😊
You make it look sooo simple.. My dog wouldn't let me be that rough mostly around butt area. Please give advice on calming a dog while cutting next time. Thank you
My dog used to bite me when he was a puppy but I was persistent, calm, and gave him loads of treats throughout the entire process. Eventually got used to it and was perfectly fine with the entire procedure 😊 hope all works out for your pup too! Good luck!
Yes, I leave it damp because otherwise it flies all over the place but I guess it depends on the breed. I heard that professional dog groomers always dry it completely before cutting
I just wouldn't had put the dog on my kitchen table and cut his fur in the kitchen where I eat, that's why I do not eat from everyone 😁, but other than that she did an awesome job.
