** Please note*** We don't use the 'compost' for the garden, it's left in the hole to break down. The purpose is to reduce our waste from using plastic bags to pick up the poop and sending the waste to landfill.

Hi there...This is Nina in Toledo, OR. Walking the dogs (Shelties) on the beach and picking up their waste has tweaked my environmental concerns. I researched what I could do about it and came upon how to make your own "poo waste" composting system. Thanks so much! I have purchased the materials and I am digging the hole myself. (I had knee replacement almost three months ago, so this seems doable but I need to pace myself.) My husband is not behind it but I am determined. Thanks for your help.

Had 2 dogs 30 years ago and used buckets from work. (Worked @ a threaded fastener (nuts and bolts) warehouse. Used the water tight buckets for the poo and the leaking buckets for the grass clippings and kitchen/garden waste. Watered down the poo and let it turn into an ooze and them 'marinate'. It worked great on the yard; a lot of water to dilute it and green up the lawn. Grass clippings would get a little water, then ferment until time to prepare the garden. It was a good system; I even had the bucket against a sun catching wall to get some solar heating action. Great system mate! Don't wear out Charlie filling it! XD

I have been using a homemade one for 18moths depending on how much waste your putting in as to,how fast it breaks down, little tip for throse who dont wanna buy the pet starter mix, use lawn clippings or veg waste same affect

Hi! I see that a lot of people use something like this bin but they don't retire the bottom, instead they make holes and that is to keep always water with the poop. Could you tell me if you think this could be better or taking off the bottom it's better

@@anjeanehickson8171 you don't use it, it just goes away into the ground as nutrients for the trees and other plants close by that's why you don't want it anywhere near your veggie garden.

We had a similar commercial system, except it used water. The bottom half of the large bucket had no holes. It was filled with water and poop and a capful of starter. Every so often you would flush it by running a hose into it for a couple of minutes, which washed liquefied waste into the surrounding soil. The advantage of it was it never filled up.

I have two black lab pups and even at just 6 months old they produce a lot of waste. I may just have to try one of these. I like that it is so easy to make and maintain. Your dog looks just like my sweet boy that I lost 5 months ago. He was just 7 years old and had cancer. Love them while you have them. Thank you again for your video.

this is the second time I have used this video....the first one I dug too close to my neighbor's house( he never said anything, but I just felt it was too close to his fence)..... this second one is far from any house out in the field...it's also where she has decided to usually poo :) Thanks for the video!!

I got the blue barrel from my neighbour’s skip some time last year, had planned to make it into a normal garden composter but never happened, so now I’m gonna use it for my pup’s poo composter! Great idea. I think I’ll do it over 2 days 😅 first just to make all the holes and saw off the end… second day to dig the hole 😅 would be great if I can teach my dog to poop straight on to it hahaha.

A few years ago I did this and for the second year the compost was great so great in fact that it attracted red ants from the yard . I left it alone while the level dropped and left the compost in place. Now I have a flowering bush that was dying come back to life growing close to it which is good however all the roots from grass etc. have come though the holes and now I have to saw through them to get at the compost that is if the ants will let me.

My parents did this years ago and used a wooden barrel drum because they didn’t like using plastic. More natural with the wood drum.

I've been using a terra cotta pot for the same anti-plastic reasoning. I use a glass plate on top that gets filled by the sprinklers to act as a bird bath

People!!!!! This is just a doggy septic system. It's not to use in your garden. The point of it is to cut down on dog poop in the land fill, cut down on plastic doggy poop bags, and prevent stink in your trash can.

Thank you! My Mom has complained in the past about a little fenced in section of my yard smelling bad because I had a boxer and some other dogs that used that area as a bathroom. My boxer died earlier this year at around 12+ years old but the 3 year old 66 pounds mutt I had gotten to keep my boxer company is not only alive but also insisted I get an English mastiff mix puppy this year too. So far, after getting the puppies, we've been taking our dogs to a big open area in the trailer park we live in to play, get used to things like lawnmowers, and such. Because we live in Virginia in the USA, it gets cold around winter and I'm dreading it so I wanted to learn how to make a dog poop compostor.

I hope you made sure it's not near a wellhead too. Good to mention even if you don't have a well, but someone might copy your idea and forget that detail in their excitement.

First thing I thought to recommend. I would position it as close as possible to a large tree too. My best lemons came from the tree which my dog prepared and i just raked leaf mulch into the area . Triple sized lemons!

Great video. When you say “Poo” it is so polite. I start laughing 😂. Now before you to tell me to p*** off. I appreciate this since it is something my kids can watch. Do you remove anything after time or do you just keep filling it. I have a large dog and I imagine it will fill eventually.

This looks great.! I do suspect it does need a warm climate to be effective and not become a possible problem for the ground water. (In my area there are many restrictions on how to composte animal waste).

It's like a small sewage works , aerobic hopefully. Think of it that way, you get some breakdown in the barrel but mainly it's relying on dispersion through the soil. No liquids so that should be small Notice you are right next to lake river . Do you have to dig it out occasionally or does it all degrade eventually ?

Thanks for the step-by-step video. 2 questions if you don't mind. 1) Does the bin need to be exposed to a certain amount of sunlight per day to compost properly? As we have lots of shady spots in our garden where we could fit the bin, sunny spots are harder to come by. 2) Do you only add a layer of compost at the bottom when installing? Or continue to layer with compost as the bin fills up?

Do you have any suggestions on hole depth? We have to have Dig Safe come out if it's over 3 feet or so. My problem is going to be not being able to go down too far as our entire yard is quite rocky.

Amazing video, thank you!! I'm building a dog park bar in Canada and would like to implement a system like this but worry it would get filled up too quickly. Also, not sure how it would fair in Canada with the ground freezing/thawing and then moving the bucket. Any suggestions on this?

Hi, great video! I have three dogs and I really want to reduce the use of plastic, I think this is the best solution, specially for our planet. I have a few questions I'm hoping you can answer, I'm wondering if it tops up at some point? is it needed to clean it up after a while? and I'm wondering why it can't be used as plantfood. This may be a strange question but do you find that this one area of your yard is so much greener than the surrounding areas without the composter? And if that's true, do you recommend moving it around every year or two?

Hi Yvette, I haven't noticed the area being so much greener. The nutrients are getting into the ground fairly deep so will have an effect on a reasonably large area. No need to move it unless the waste isn't breaking down quick enough and you manage to fill it up. Dave
