DIY Drawer System Build For Overlanding / Camping. Save big money by building your own!

We show in great detail how you can build your own at a fraction of the cost. Not just a typical camping drawer system, this is more like an overland galley!
For this overland drawer system we used readily available materials and basic carpentry skills to build it. You don’t have to be a master craftsman or have a fully equipped woodworking shop to build a camp kitchen you'll be proud of.
The information in the video is easily translated to fit in any SUV for camping, or to build your own custom homemade truck drawers.

I'm currently designing ny own drawer system for an F150 bed and was glad I found this, lots of good info. The case joints are good, but they would be even better by using better plywood. For those that have access to it, Baltic birch plywood should be he only consideration here. It is made of all hardwood layers of the same thickness, no softwood filler like this plywood. Both may hold up very well for s long time, but for anyone looking to improve the design, this would be the simplest way. The groove style is common in cabinetry joints, but those are static and get supported off the wall and the floor. Larger sections of material should be left if at all possible, but you were using 1/2 ply, cabinets are 3/4. 1/2 for all drawer parts, and maybe 3/8 for bottoms of big drawers, 1/4 for small drawer bottoms would work. And 3/4 for your main case structure sides and top, bottom could be 1/2 to save weight.

Guys, subscribed yesterday, a little tip to using a larger drill bit to countersink screws is to put the drill in reverse to save drilling too deep. You must admit we've all done it and gone too deep or straight through... lol 😆

The details are extremely clear and precise without being verbose, the demonstrations and camera work is onpoint. Really, can't overexagerate how well you nailed the DIY informative video. Great job. Clever design and great woodworking skills. I think you could actually make and sell those if you wanted to. The only thing I would do differently is maybe make the mounting mechanism with a locking lever or something similar instead of bolts. That way if one needs the space to haul cargo, one can easily remove the cabinet without the need for tools.

Dovetail joint are better. You have to smack the sides apart with a hammer. And when you pull the drawer front, it pulls the rest of the box with it.
@WanderlostOverland
@WanderlostOverland 5 лет назад
I agree, dovetails are better, especially for the fronts. However, a finger joint is almost as strong if done right. We chose joints that just about anyone can make with basic woodworking tools. Not everyone has a dovetail jig, the knowledge on using it, nor the router bits necessary. Thanks for watching!

Awesome video! Graham Cayhill from 4WD Action Australia said in an interview recently that Overlander channels need to have a beautiful gal along otherwise it is just a weird dude living out of a truck, so you got that covered ;) Awesome detail, and nice job explaining how to cut the joinery without a dado stack (I Keep one table saw set up for rabbits all the time, I couldn't live without my dado stack set!!). Nice build...drawer sizes? Counting the fingers and without the drawer faces looks like top is 5.75", mid 8" (without the pullout) and bottom 7". But that can't be right as the opening is only 21" with the dimensions you gave, leaving only 1/4" gap for spacing. Just the mid drawer pull out alone would add 3/4". Tx! Updated: I see, you raised the groove (and therefore drawer bottom) for the 3/4" pull out. Sounds like it's right after all.

Wow I've seen alot builds. I used to build and homes anything with wood man I miss it hate being disabled and not able to make nice stuff anymore. But I have a truck I've been wanting a box built that's got to be water proff only gonna have a ladder rack but I'll have plywood on top to keep stuff kinda dry. Exspecialy rods and reels and all. I use tool boxes in the back down the side when my bed was bigger new truck smaller bed. So I want a box on the floor of the bed between the fenders all the way back. Having 2 draws. For fishing gear some camping and ide love to build a box for stove and sink like in SUV but not able anymore. If I had a shop ide got my daughter to help been single dad for 18 years now she's been a big help. Sometimes lol. She's a girl lol. NAw but if I had shop or shed I could take my time. But tryed to set one up in the home didn't work to much junk lol. But yea I love your build. Ide love it if I seen a vidoe of someone close to me that lived to build to build like I did ide help anyone just to help. Even after I got hurt ide help cause I missed building homes and what ever. Well y'all have a great week have fun out in the wild county. God bless

Just curious, Do I need to have a bottom or replace that with L brackets to my floor? Seems that the slides would create the bottom structure of the box and could just use L brackets at the sides base. Just wondering if you had done that before. Seems a waste to bolt a box floor to another floor like Goose Gear floor as an example.
