Theres not very many good tutorials out there on how to cut knuckles. This is the easiest way I have found to modify you're knuckles for more angle, and its a budget mod! If you liked this video please give it and thumbs up and subscribe so I can continue to make more videos!

Thanks for the dope informational video. I have 46 arms and just picked up modified m3 knuckles and m3 calipers and rotors for a good deal, I have a shortened 36 tie rod hoping it works if not I’ll grab some e92 and see what I got to do. Amazing work on the video

I was looking for such a video 3 years 🤓 cant find on internet from which cast bmw knuckles are made . Finally found someone grinding them ! So it’s cast steel if I’m not wrong ? It’s no need for pre heat it and post heat for better connection ? What wire did you use ? Do you recommend welding other parts of knuckle like top McPherson mount and lower control arm mount on the knuckle for individual geometrie ? You think this will hold like regular steel welding ? For any answer of that questions I’ll be in heaven ! You helped me already a lot ! ❤️‍🔥 Thank you good man !

Yes cast steel, and mine never broke in the 4 years I’ve used them! Preheating depends on the amperage of your welder, but it never hurts. I wouldn’t mess with anything other than the tie rod pick up points

Ackerman angle isnt height of the steering rack location its the distance towards the centre of the car horizontally.

Ackerman is a line projected from lower ball joint through tierod end pickup on both sides to their intersection point. This method for shortening/welding knuckles increases the Ackerman effect on the wheels, you'll have heaps of lock on your lead wheel, but follow/trailing wheel will not steer in very far.

It’s definitely not an accurate measurement for Ackerman, but it drives and feels great, with really good self steer so 🤷🏻‍♂️

The knuckles worked great! Another guy with more bmw/drifting experience than me drove my car and he said the angle/steering felt good, no complaints.

No. You need e90 inners that are longer

On a bmw, absolutely. Just follow the steps in the video and I’d recommend e46 control arms as well

Hey man, What kind of welder were you using? (brand and model) and in your opinion what would be the cheapest mig welder (gas or gasless) to get the job done to weld these thick knuckles without issues down the road with cracking, breaking, etc. Thank you! @Teysik

My favorite budget welder is the Hobart handler 140. It has enough power for most things. Always use gas for anything car related. It’s just a lot better. Preheat the knuckles with a map torch, not propane, and the 140 will do just fine. You can get lucky and find a used 140 with a gas bottle for $500-600. Otherwise buying a new full size gas bottle is like $300, but you never have to buy another one. Just pay $40 ish to exchange for a new full bottle

Hi, would a 240v stick welder with 200A have enough penetration for the knuckles? Also, I was curious if it was enough to weld extensions for the control arms.

Yah stick welders can penetrate really well they just don’t always make for the best looking welds. I don’t recommend control arm extensions. It’s really hard to make them perfect geometry wise. Just get some e46 control arms from a junkyard for super cheap

It’s close to stock Ackerman, it’s hard to measure. It’s definitely not zero Ackerman, but it works really good, especially for newer drivers

Same process, for any car, but you might want to find more information about how much to take off the e46 knuckles, and if you’ll need different tie rods

Can’t remember exactly, it’s been awhile. But pretty damn high to ensure good penetration. You can pretty much max out the welder without fear of burning through steel that thick

Nah it has prolly about 5° negative camber

I wasn't too worried about having the ackerman perfect. The steering feels amazing, hundreds of laps on these knuckles with no issues and steering is very responsive and self steers really well
