We have the largest size kiddie pool. We drilled a 3” hole in one size 1” from bottom on the side of pool. Attached a 3” pipe with a drain valve outside the pool. Turn valve, pool drains into a field 10ft away. Turn valve back to normal position and fill pool. Works like a dream and no need to put your hand or anything else in the water to drain. Wish I could post a pic for reference. It’s really cool!

Thanks for stopping by! In the summer months with the sun beaming down algae can form quickly so we drain and scrub it out every other day to make sure they have some clean water and the ducks love it when it’s clean. As far as your other comment for putting up the ducks, we starting when they were very young to direct them into the coop right at dark. And after a day or two at sunset as soon as it’s dark they went in on there own and we close up the coop. First thing in the morning we open it back up and let them out. They do not have food access or water while in the coop and they are doing well. We have auto feeder where they have access the whole time they are out and water as well. Hope this helps

Great idea!.. to add to it... If you hook up a small pump, ($55 on Amazon).. and a garden hose..you can use that amazing duck water for your plants. My plants have grown sooooo beautiful after using the duck poop water. 🤗😍 I use a long extension cord, out to the pool, and put the pump in a tote...its a win, win, win.. ducks get clean water, plants get fertilized, water bill doesn't get higher! Great idea. I think ill make mine with the drain closer to the edge for ease of use.
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 2 года назад
Closer to the edge would definitely be easier to reach. The reason I have mine in center is to be able to spin the pool itself around in a circle to be able to clean and reach each surface of the pool. If it was close to the edge I would not be able to spin the pool where it’s at instead having to walk around the pool to clean. If you are able to move the drain closer to the edge it would definitely help you on the reach. I just made another pool as the current one will be 2 years old in June and is finally done. Has a few cracks in the plastic here and there but super great investment for 2 year use

@@andrewhamilton5739, our ducks will be for eggs only at this point but may venture into meat down the road. Our rabbits will be for our meat production but will keep our breeders and sell an occasional bunny here and there because they are pedigree Rex and I'm sure someone will possibly want one once in a while. The kids will split the money for their hard work and taking care of the rabbits. Great idea. Put the drain to one side of the pool and then incline the pool slightly so that any debris will be directed downhill to the drain. Put a valve on the drain pipe, anywhere it's practical to reach. This way, cleaning the bottom is easier. You also don't have to drain the pool completely to get it clean, Saves water. Just saw the date is 2020, so maybe this is redundant by now.....

Thank you! I have been trying to find a simpler way to drain our duck pool until my budget allows me to add a bio filter. A note: the linked elbow is the wrong one. You need a 1-1/2 inch P-Trap, it has captured nuts so they can screw onto the drain and pipe.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting! This setup seems to work now for about a year and a p-trap might work just as well but we were looking at reducing the height of the pipe assembly so we didn’t have to put the pool any higher than it is. Hope this helps if you try it out.

It was a skewer that you can use for Kabobs. We just hang it on the fence and the skewer has a curved end which grabs the drain plug and allows us to pull it out without getting hands in there until it's necessary.

A valve at the end of the pipe would make it better. I appreciate the video. when I build my duck pond, I'll use the sink drain too but will put a valve at the end of the pipe to make it easier to drain without getting into the pen or reaching into the water. then I'll use a hose to rinse, then close the valve and fill.
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 2 года назад
Thanks for stopping by. I do like the valve idea. The only thing I will mention is, depending on how many ducks you have and how often you clean out the pool, you may still have to get in there and clean out some of the mess by hand from the sink drain as debris, dirt, and grass can clog up a little bit and will need some manual intervention to break it free. I know we aren't able to get in there every single day and filth starts to collect quickly. If it drains out completely on its own, then yes, I think the valve would be a very practical design but if it is installed in hopes of not going in to clean the pool itself, you may find that you're having to do so anyway. Thanks for the input and have a blessed day.

Hey hi i love ur video, but instead of putting the drain in the middle. U think i can put it on the side panel.
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 2 года назад
You could always try on the lower side panel as long as it’s sealed well it shouldn’t be a problem. The only thing I think might be difficult is if you wanted to get the dirt out of the pool you would have to lift and dump it out and spray it out to clean it. That would definitely work it’s just that I didn’t want to have to lift up the pool and dump it out every time causing more wear on the plastic itself. This same pool is going on 2 years now with this setup and will have to change out in the spring as some of the plastic is starting to wear thin.
@tmackie1694
@tmackie1694 Год назад
I set my pool up about a year ago with drain on lower part of side panel and connected to ball valve. This works just “okay”’ but not good enough because not all the water and muck at the bottom can drain out, so I have to flip the pool and rinse. The next time I’m definitely putting the drain at the bottom.

I think it will eventually get that way but it’s going on year 3 and I place all the water and food in one location and try to have area big enough to where animals still have some grazing area away from normal food water and coop so that may help prolong the issue. Would a filter/pump be needed ever? 4. Have you ever considered a ram pump from a water source and just let excess water continually push out? Would that be a mess?
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 2 года назад
Hello! Thanks for stopping by. Yes we usually get 6 at most in the pool however they don’t always all try to get in at the same time unless we’ve just filled it up. The drain does help with the water but the rest of the mess will have to be sprayed out to get totally clean. I’ve never tried a pump but imagine that it would work for this setup but have no experience with it. If you did have continual water draining, the ducks would have a continual field day with the drainage water making holes in the puddles as splashing mud everywhere so I would not think continually draining water would be the best choice in at least what we have and our experience. Thanks for the questions and hope that helped.

That sounds like a huge mess and waste of water. They can still drink it after they poop in it.

What kind of pvc pipe did you hook to the sink drain?

You're welcome! The hassle of getting 5 gallon buckets and emptying the pool down to a manageable dump level was tedious. I figured this would be a quick drain setup and then be able to clean better that way without straining the back or constantly having to re-situate the setup. Thanks for stopping by and hope some other videos catch your eye and will explore your channel as well.

Can it be drained direct into the ground, under the pond?
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 2 года назад
Yes, you can drain directly to the ground underneath as long as the pool sits off the ground just a tiny bit to allow the water to drain. The only thing with that setup would be that the ground directly around the pool would be soaked and the ducks would probably start digging holes around it making a muddy mess. Thanks for stopping by!

Have you had any leaking issues since this video. I was debating sandwiching pond liner sheet in the drain to coat the pool.
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 2 года назад
No leaks until start of second year winter. The plastic was cracking in areas on the sides of the pool and getting ready to install a new pool in a few days. It lasted almost two years and think it was a great investment and held up very well.

Hey. What size hole saw do you use? I’m new at this
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 2 года назад
I believe it was a 3.5” hole saw adapter for the sink drain I had. You want to get the hole big enough for drain to fit through but small enough to where the outer lip of the drain is bigger than the hole to make a good seal.

Do you just use water from the hose?
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 3 года назад
Initially when we started out, Yes! Now that we have a rain water collection system, I just run a hose from it to the pool and fill it up that way.

Not a good idea. The ducks can get hurt in the inside metal stopper. You can buy ready plastic stoppers that have open and close faucet on the outside.
@tuanxex

Why don’t you just flip ur pool over and done, no need draining…. Omg so easy
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill Год назад
Yes that would seem much more simple however when you have a pool full of water and you lift an end up to dump out you put quite a bit of pressure in that thin plastic and over short amount of time you will get cracks and breaks in the plastic not allowing you to hold water anymore. Thanks for stopping by

Why????????? Why not just pick the pool up and dump the water out???
@HomesteadersOnTheHill
@HomesteadersOnTheHill 4 года назад
The pool is actually pretty heavy when it’s full and can’t lift it with all the water in the pool and doing so will most likely damage the pool. If you only plan on having and inch of water in there, it would probably be more beneficial to just dump it but we like to fill it up almost to top for the ducks and also change the water out every 2 to 3 days with new collected rain water. I have a video for that as well 👍
