In this video I'm showing an ebike I built with a non gear reduction 24v DC brushed motor all the parts were bought on Amazon. This was a cheap build, cost without batteries $70 USD includes 24 volt motor, DC brushed controller with throttle, 16T freewheel sprocket, 25H 68T sprocket and 25H chain. My batteries are restored older free finds so you will need to add about $50 USD for two new 10ah or 12ah lead acid batteries. I have ordered some new batteries and will do an update video on performance, I might also try a lithium battery pack. I built this ebike because I wanted to see if it was possible to build an ebike with an inexpensive non geared 24v DC brushed motor. I used a scrap kids bike because I used a non gear reduction motor, I don't believe it would be powerful enough on a bike with larger wheels. I wanted to build an ebike that could climb hills and not just give an assist, with this set up the bike is fully functional with all it's gears so even if the batteries die you're not stuck without gears. To charge I use a 12 volt battery charger and charge batteries separately, I also use an old 24v lawnmower charger and plug into the bike directly. I welded the freewheel sprocket to the hub of the bike wheel, make sure you know the proper direction of the motor and sprocket. You don't have to do any welding if you buy a freewheel adapter and remove the cassette off the wheel and install two 16t single speed freewheel sprockets with the adapters, everything can be found online. I chose to mount the motor over top of the wheel there's a few reasons why, I didn't want the motor near the peddles or my legs also I didn't want to change the size of the chain that came with the 25H sprocket. I know a lot of people don't weld but you could built this without welding if you drill the bike frame and bolt and screw the mounts together. I will do more detailed videos on building the ebike, performance and wiring if you would like more info. Big Thanks to my Subscribers! hope your all doing good. If you're new to the channel Please consider subscribing and turning on notifications it really helps the channel and I can build more projects. Thanks for watching. Peace

Putting your sprocket on the other side of the back wheel like that, just going with an entire extra chain system, the motor all connected & mounted over the back side like that... 🤔 I never thought about doing it like that. I KNEW there had to be a better way! Awesome stuff, thanks for sharing it.

Nice work! Hope the fresh batts got you better performance. Hmm. I bought a left-side drive freewheel but I can't weld. I am putting together my first ebike (after fun times with an electric 3 wheeled wheelbarrow). I was picturing pretty much what you have done, but with a geared motor for more torque. Will have to get a favour from someone to add a bigger sprocket and mount the whole freewheel to the hub. HMMMM. I will know when the parts are in my hands! Good stuff. One way or another, I will get it done! Might not go fast as I didn't do any math. But that's what a prototype is for!

Thanks a lot 👍 I recently put some 12 Ah lead acid batteries on, it's way better but I will upgrade to lithium one day. You can remove the cassette and put on an adapter so you will have two single speed freewheels the one for the motor use a flange type freewheel and bolt on a large sprocket, but you will lose your pedal gears tho 😢

@@kurtscottage Totally just got myself something together after watching your video first time! I honestly didn't do any more research haha, just thought, alright mate, he did it, YOU do it! Thanks for that! Very fun to do yourself. Didn't do you justice, but managed a sturdy build using cut barn-hinge as a mounting plate w motor right near hub. In the end (6 tries) I just bodged together something w a freewheel on the motor driving one gear and keeping the original chain (2 speed front + fixed the rear derailer on one gear). Can pedal normal and coast and use motor for "assist" (but the motor sends the pedals round haha). Put nearly 100Km on it so far regardless. So much fun I haven't yet tried rag-jointing a sprocket on the other side and doing it all over (so I can keep my feet still with the motor going). 12V motor but I tried 24V for a minute and that thing moves! +40Kph but it gets hot quick! Thinking of adding a series/parallel battery switch for "passing" the store-bought bikes (limited to 32Kph in Canada). 18 Ah SLA motorcycle battery slung in an ammo case w a similar PWM controller and external charger (but don't charge in a sealed box). Didn't cost that much if you only include the parts that worked in the end :) Thanks again for the inspiration, sorry to waffle on

The finest modification you can do for a chain driven electric bike conversion is without a doubt adding a freewheel. The only thing I would upgrade is a 36v lithium battery.

@jaakkaan4784
@jaakkaan4784 2 года назад
yes u definetely should cover up the wires. If you're using a 24V motor it'll be pulling around 14A of current which is pretty dangerous. I'd even suggest a whole crimped wiring setup as it allows for safety to be prioritized but at the same it's easy to disconnect a wire connection for whatever reason you might have to disconnect it.
@Dannysoutherner
@Dannysoutherner 11 месяцев назад
Interesting build. Could the motor be wired the other way and mounted right above the back tire? Your setup looks like it would affect balance badly. Otherwise I like it. Using a bigger driven gear it should work fine with a grownups bike.

Hi! Im building a similar build for my electric bike, and i have a question about the rotation of the motor. I've built my diy bike thats similar to your, and it using the smae exact motor your using, but the motors spinning the wrong direction. How can I reverse the direction of the motor? I have it hooked up to a 2 pin rocker switch and a 22.2v 1400mah battery and it all works, but how would i have to change it if i wanted to make it go the opposite direction? Its going clockwise now, but i want it to go counter clockwise. If i swap the connectors on the motor ( like connect positive motor wire to negative battery wire and negative motor wire to positive battery wire ), would that work?
@Aspirwlee
@Aspirwlee 2 года назад
If you're not using a controller, changing positive and negative connectors would work. If you are using a controller though, you probably connected something wrong or built it in the wrong direction. I'm not sure if it's gonna be okay when you connect your battery or motor backwards, but there is a chance that you can fry a diode or two.

A easy way to connect motor to drive bike is by fitting another pedal crank gear on the left of bike & connect motor to gear on left crank & right crank connects to wheel gears. Only need to mount motor in centre of frame & cut off pedal crank arms. Easily reversible.

I have a question - will this type of motor change the direction of rotation when reversing the positive and the negative wire? If not, you need to be careful when ordering. If the motor spins clockwise (like yours), you can mount it left of the wheel. But if the motor spins anti-clockwise, you can only mount it over top of the wheel.

I LOVE your ebike builds. Got the long Covid, so I fatigue easily when i try to exercise. So a cheap ebike seemed to be just the ticket. I'm 6'7 and weight 300 lbs, but it's illegal to have ebike with more than 250w assist, unless you register it as a motorcycle here. So i got the 250w kit with the geared motor. Two questions. Is there a reason you put the freewheel sprocket on the wheel hub, and not on the motor? This is not i critique, but genuine interest. Seems like the cheap little chinese free wheels would be prone to failure, and will need some maintenance, since they are not sealed. So i would have thought that putting the free wheel on the motor, and hense further from the road grime, would be better? Also - if the free wheel is destroyed, it's welded on, whereas there are adapters to make the free wheels fit on the motor shafts. Welding the sprocket directly to the wheel hub should be easy. But you are the expert, so i would love to know your reasoning :) Would you advice me to get a higher wattage controller than the motors output. Like a 500w 24v for a 230w 24v motor? And dude - thank you for all your awesome videos. You have helped me so many times with your down to earth solutions. From clearing snow, fixing rust on my car, and now with a solution to my health problem. Seriously - if i can make my old military bike work with 250w assist, it would be a game changer (I have plasma, welder, metal brakes etc, so the fabrication should be doable, so it's just a matter if the motor and controller will hold up) Keep up the great work :)
@kurtscottage
@kurtscottage Год назад
Thank you so much! Sorry to here that, hope you get better soon. I guess the best reason to put the freewheel on the hub is so the chain isn't always turning, but true changing it is a pain. I had to do it the other day welded it on backwards lol. You could weld the drive sprocket right on the hub, many kits work that way but use spoke rippers. At that wattage I would use the largest 410 sprocket you can find on the hub. One of my bike uses a geared 250 watt motor they would probably be better for your build, I over volted one from 12v to 24v 500 watts, I ordered the 12v motor because it was half the price, but It does get warm. If you could add some cooling like a fan or heat sink to your controller and motor that would really help. I don't think its a good idea to increase the wire thickness to the controller, this will guarantee to eventually burn the controller. I find the wires act as resistors, can be a good thing tho, use more heat resistant wire or cover individual motor / bat wires with fiberglass selves. Have everything so you can disconnected easily just in case. I'm working on another build will try and add more advise on low wattage builds. Good Luck
@petergdk
@petergdk Год назад
@@kurtscottage Thank you for your kind answer :) I got the 250W kit with the "spoke rippers", as you call it, that was a 32 tooth gear. Got a 500w controller for the 24V motor, and out a 25 amp fuse between the battery and the controller. Also put a 60 amp switch between the two 12v 12ah lead acid batteries, so i can balance charge them. Just hot glued a buck converter to both batteries as charge controllers, so now i can just flip the switch to disconnect the batteries, and power both buck converters from one 4 amp 19v laptop power supply. So now i can bring the charger when i drive to friends houses, and plug it in, via the 5.5mm plug i soldered to the inputs on the buck converters. The gearing is actually perfect. Even if I weigh 300 lbs, and my 38 year old steel military bike another 65 lbs with the batteries. It's not fast, and i have to assist when the incline is more than 3-4%, but that's fine :) It was a little hard to install, since the bike has the three internal hub gears, so the hub on my bike was 52mm, where the spoke ripper gear only had i 36mm hole. But with a kompas and some patience with a carbide bit, i made it fit. I have put about 200 miles on it so far, and it works great. Only thing is, that is seems the thumb throttle with the three indicators lights are expecting a 7S lithium battery pack and not SLA's. So where two fully charged 12v SLA's gives you 27,6 volts and 7S lithium would give you 29,4. So it's a little hard to figure out when you are truly about to run out of power, i you dont hook up at voltage meter. So I will find a cheap one, and do that. But awesome kit, for tinkerers :) Once again thank you for your videos. Without you, i would never have built this bike. But now I'm all in, and have soldered a spot welder, battery capacity testers, balance chargers and bought a couple od BMS's, active balancers etc, so i can build my own Lithium pack, for all the the used cells i have lying around :)

Using the small motor makes it more affordable. I have an idea to increase available torque by using the leverage principle. Will need mountain bike cranks & to increase torque connect motor output to large gear on crank & connect small gear on crank to wheel. This will give you a lever advantage. The difference between the small crank & large crank in Outside Diameter is like a small lever & will increase torque to the wheel & should help with going up hills.

Neat,but 1 question why not mount the battery down low, or put them on a little trailer?, would be much better handling,

It seems silly at first, but I like the idea of a battery trailer! Could really put on the miles and as you say, would not make the bike tippy. I often ride with a trailer so I will make a parallel battery cable extension so I can add batteries (when I make my electric bike :)
