So we bought a narrowboat - with a broken engine and decided the 'best' option was to make it electric drive... on a VERY TIGHT BUDGET...
Electric Bus motor, batteries and a narrowboat gearbox at the ready, lets see how it goes!
I am 'vloging' as i go, so as I do it, I will vlog it... this ISN'T a finished project (far from it!).
So you will see the project develop - warts and all!
So here's vlog number one of how we are attempting to do it!
(Please excuse the first couple of minutes being filmed 'portrait' and not filling the screen - I'm learning as I go!)

i have had some experience with electric boats and converting a viking 23 at the moment to electric i personally would go direct drive or connect motor via a drive belt as in most electric systems and adapt the control with a thumb toggle switch to control the forward and reverse or you can get an electronic digital version of amazon you just got look at getting the controls at a higher amp rating than that of the system and yes we are in uk and solar will work for charging however you got to design it so that you have enough solar panels and charge amps going into battery's that you can recharge in one day so your roof will basically be full of solar but that's good use of roof space or if you moor in windy locations you can use wind gen all be it they can be noisy if you was closer to me id give you a hand but still i will follow your progress on here

Hi! here's a bit of info connected to electric energy, low cost, and yes, WINGING IT. so, i found there is a large electric bike modding community in germany. you know, the electricity nerds types only with fetish for speed and thrill. so what they do when they want extra juice is to build lithium ion batteries themselves. for CHEAP. im talking like for 50 euros when buying one would be 1000€. and they doing it by buying up used lithium ion battery packs, then opening them to access the individual cells (which look like ordinary AA batteries) and then testing each one with voltmeter. basically turns out that a battery block is only as good as its' weakest cell. so they get these used packs ten a penny, rebuild them, splice them together, put them in a DIY case, add a charge controller and - install them. hope this tip helps you in the future.

The entire world moved from steam locomotives to Diesel-Electric locomotives. These run a Diesel motor powered electric generator that powers the electric motors that turn the wheels. They did this for a reason: More efficiency and better economics at getting down the rails. So you are making a step in the right direction by going to Electric ..... but you need to leave space for a Diesel Genset to charge up your batteries (if you want to match the efficiency of a train in your boat. )
@honzinger
@honzinger 4 года назад
Check the revs of the electric engine first and compare it to the revs on the shaft after the gear box of the old diesel engine . Try to stay in the same range or else you might need a different propeller. Try to go without gearbox because you will find these gearboxes - apart from having problems with the torque - can be quite noisy ( high pitched drill noise at the worst) without the noise of the diesel engine covering it up . 1400 revs max on the shaft is ideal for a drive without a gear. 1 kW / ton should be enough to get the boat upt to hull speed and stop her without fear.

Do you have a plan for unexpected discharge, that's a lot of energy in those batteries. Thanks for taking the time to document.

Does the battery controller in this video allow for multiple sources at the same time? Say, solar, wind and shore all at the same time?
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget 3 года назад
The battery controller is very basic. Should we wish to add more more solar or wind we would need to get a better system. This does the basic solar we have that charges batteries for our lights and pumps etc.

Why use the gearbox at all? You don't need neutral and the motor can run in either direction. Others have used belt drive which avoids the need for precision alignment. It also gives some shock absorption for the motor. If you know the Rpm per volt of the motor you can work out what drive ratio you need. Other larger electric boat find they use about 1Kw for normal canal speeds and about 4x that for emergency stops. This should give you some idea of the belt size required, maybe one from a scrap washing machine would do. All the best with it.
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget 4 года назад
We did look at diferent options (that we will probably discuss as the project continues). Ultimately we are trying to build with what we have rather than get diferent systems... We will see how it develops though! Cheers

@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget I think you will have less work doing away with the gearbox and driving directly to the propshaft, also will the gearbox, drive coupling take the torque from that motor. The easiest way I can see to marry the motor to the box if you insist on doing that is a second drive plate on the motor with a disk between them that you could bolt both drive shafts to. R&D will supply a driveplate with the centre machined to any spline size, I had one made for a hydraulic drive. You would need a spring loaded spacer on both motor and gearbox shaft to centralise the disk with drive plates. (can't put a sketch on here) If you visit Canalworld Forum a chap called Peterboat has converted his boat to electric drive see www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/100085-my-big-boat-convered-to-electric-drive/ there may be information there that is useful to you.
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget 4 года назад
We may change ideas but we thought the gearbox was the most straightforward way of getting the drive to the prop and controlling speed and forward / reverse. It's something I will be looking more into and vlog about in the coming days... See what options are out there. Cheers
@chrisgray1549
@chrisgray1549 4 года назад
I think you’re a brave man for trying this, I can fully understand the way of going with the gear box as then you can have the motor spinning in one direction without the need for loop returns to change the motor direction. However Brian may be right with the torque handling of the gearbox, I knew someone who went through 4 gearboxes trying to find the right one for their boat! For a route of charging, could you add an alternator onto the other end of the motor so it will always be charging when the motor is spinning? One thing to think about is the propeller dimensions, if the pitch or diameter are too great it could damage something in the mix of it all. And remember this golden rule, NEVER earth anything to the hull! I’m looking forward to the next video already

Been there done it, and got the t-shirt! Last winter I build an electric motor in my sailboat. Www.hansfix.nl/electric. What kind of motor is it? A series wound motor? That has a high tork and can run at low revs you 'll need. And also easy to reverse. I modified my engine, also a series wound. And made it reversible with some contactors. See my site, it really works very good.

@@ChrisGamble I gather a fairly new build electric most uses "old fashioned" 2V traction batteries. Owner is a sort of engineering genius who didn't want to go down the lithium route for obvious reasons ... as in keeping the electrics simple and the cost down and not having to worry about charging below 0C.

Looking at the gearbox it looks like a mechanical gearbox (PRM120, now redudnant parts hard to get), the norm from rev/fwd or fwd/rev is to pause in neutral, do you invisage the torque from electric motor to be too high to allow this, thus stripping gearbox, or will you utilise a motor off control in neutral??
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget 4 года назад
It's a Hurth gearbox I believe. And yes one if the things we need to sort is that it doesn't just rip the gearbox or connections to bits as we accelerate or as we change gear... That's still in development! 🤔

Going to be interesting to see how this turns out. We converted our Caracruiser to solar-electric propulsion with a relatively small battery back-up last year after our petrol outboard got stolen. We'll manage just over 3mph on solar alone on a decent day, with a 110ah battery set that allowed us to go 2mph for 3 days straight in very poor weather. We can switch from charge mode (all solar goes into the batteries) or solar drive (motor is powered by the solar panels, taking from the batteries as necessary). It's a 1300W motor on a 1t boat - so 3400W on a narrowboat could be interesting - but at least Springers have thin hulls - so maybe the weight isn't quite as bad as a traditional narrowboat.
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget 4 года назад
We reckon the boat weighs something like 10ton, but obviously never had it weighed. As with most boats once it's moving it drifts along nicely... On the videos there we weren't going past half throttle so not envisioning many 'power' issues. And we have 16 batteries so hopefully get us a decent range... Ideally if we get a couple of days cruising from full charge I will be more than happy...
@danielburgin28
@danielburgin28 4 года назад
Hopefully the network gains charge points before too long. Two days isn't too bad, but I'm guessing it would take a while to get the charge back - even with a full roof of panels. We just managed 90 miles 55 locks in a week without anything but the sun charging the batteries. The first 3 days were completely grey and rainy - which wasn't ideal. We didn't have one single day of full-on sun this year, either. Proved it's a viable project, though, and cheaper than a replacement petrol outboard. Hope yours turns out well. We've found it quite fun monitoring the various voltages and characterising the system.

Interesting project but the quote you had for a gland to join the spline shafts is far too high. the plate you need to join motor to clutch plate would cost far less. Get it drawn up in CAD and laser cut or a small engineering firm could machine one. Pity your not in my part of the world because I know just the people. Google laser cutters in your area and discuss with them. To be fair if you could find a capable model engineer they could most likely knock something up. I look forward to following this.
