The problem is that 'DIY Bodge Dad' soon becomes known as 'Electrician Dad' to friends and family when he's asked/offers to do some 'minor' electrical work like swapping a light, swapping a socket, rewiring your house...
I love it when you go to a customer and they tell you the lights are tripping and you find they have replaced a light and joined all the reds together and all the blacks. And they tell you it was always like that. I usually tell them that it would only work if the laws of physics changed.😂😂
I doubt that there was a Minor Works Certificate or Electrical Installation Certificate or a notification of the work to the local authority, under Part P of the Building Regulations, for this bodgery.
Call out charges are a con. My milkman doesnt charge a call out charge, nor does the postman, or bin man, or gardener for doing their jobs. Money for old rope!
This was a particularly interesting episode, with plenty of food for thought. Your derision of "DIY bodge ups" is relevant in many trades, not just home wiring. If you are going to "do it yourself" (whatever the job is), it is encumbant upon you to research the job quite thoroughly beforehand so that the correct options can be chosen without fail. Your life and the lives of your loved ones can depend upon your choices. Failure may result in a mortal electric shock, building fire, or brake-failure leading to a deadly crash, or to the building structure failing, etc. If you do not have the necessary expertise, get a professional to do it for you -- or, at a minimum, to check all your work.
Just to confuse it even more, black used to be neutral but is now a line (live) conductor (L2). Blue was a line conductor (L3) but is now neutral. Old was red yellow blue as L1,L2 and L3, black neutral. Post harmonisation 2004 is brown black grey as L1, L2 and L3, blue as neutral.
Was just going to point this out. Eyebrow went up with a quickness when he said white was live. Now checking the polarity on cheap Chinese fixtures to the list of things that I need to do on site...🤪😤😒
Black and white is American wiring colours is it not? Black being live and white being ground (they don''t do neutrals) which is why so many yanks come to the UK and start fitting sockets back to front with incorrect polarity when they find our old black and reds.
It's a pleasure (as always) to watch your vlogs.... We (wife and I) inherited a property that needs fully rewiring inc consumer unit, I only hope i can find someone as conscientious as you are.. Regards Steve
5:01 - don't count on that - all to often "pro's" bodge and bash on just as well as "DIYers" - also bear in mind some DIYers will do a better job than pros!
Fij Tips some do, and some don’t. I’ve spent the last few years putting the previous owners mistakes in my house right. Pretty much every conceivable mistake in the book, including undersized (and melted) cables / twisted together connections / missing earths. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.....
I'd imagine that's quite common for rented properties i.e. owner trying to squeeze as much profit out of it as they can. After all, they don't have to live there, do they!
Ive stopped fitting integrated led downlights as its a pain as the customer cant changed the bulbs anymore. I think this will become more of a problem in the future with ip led bulkhead fittings in bathrooms where theyll have to fork out for a electrician to change the led gear tray when it goes rather than them changing the bulb
That’s true Steve, but what the word on the street is; if you’ve broken the integrity of the ceiling then you should restore the integrity, fire rated down lighters would do that 😉
@@PJB71 If the ceiling isnt fire rated then you have no integrity to restore , the fitting itself is more than adequate so as far as building regs are concerned its compliant . This is something that really needs to be addressed, at a legal level, bringing the law into line with best practice
The Building regs state that the Building must not be left less satisfactory in compliance than when you started.... Therefore the downlights must be of the same fire rating of the ceiling. So you have a duty to find that out and install the correct fittings.
@@steverobinson8170 even 9.5mm plasterboard is non combustable (rated A2), you stick a plastic led down light in (not fire rated) you've just broken the law.
When people twist the solid cables an then put them in a block they are actually weakening the cable by pressure on it. That’s why twisting cables is a bad idea just my opinion when people do it an you come to sort out what they have done. That’s why doing them separate is correct like you an all of us do
It is frustrating that so many people create complete messes like this, and I completely understand your frustration as electricians. Please be assured that there are some skilled competent DIY people who do care about their work, and have a safety first policy. I too am frustrated when I find DIY errors by people who really should not have meddled where they did not know what they are doing. Same group of conscientious DIY ers also understand the legal side of things. Great video
Black / White are usa colours . Black = live/phase/hot White = neutral Just as well you checked polarity as it was wired wrong even for that standard lol. in saying that I seen your probe move so could of moved the the ring of the fitting and confirmed the neutral is white as it should be.
The times I have been called out to a light fitting and it won't work or it won't switch off you know what it's like the customer has been to B&Q they bought a light fitting and the guy as wired it back up ? 🤣 I should rich doing these types of cock ups oh and the wife wonders why I have a drink at night ?
Yep im here and making more videos than ever! Make sure you hit the notification bell! Sometimes RU-vid won't send you my videos even when you're subscribed but if you press the notification bell and click "all" then you won't miss my new videos. Im posting on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 5pm at the moment.
That glass bubble lamp was a double botch up. As a viewer from Canada, black should be hot and white should be neutral. That is the standard in north america.
Nice job Jordan....Oh the old 2 way switching bodge up!!! Been there got the T-shirt 30 years over. Take ya coat off time and get that wander lead busy 😂😂. You still flat out with EICR’s???
My sister in laws old house is like that her Ex master bodger messed with the electrics , originally it was wired with 2 wires like many of the old council properties with a live pulled off the downstairs feed and a borrowed neutral . looks like he's tried to add an extra wire when he replaced the ceiling roses , you got two way switching downstairs and i way upstairs
With the metal light fitting, would it not be prudent to put a correct colour sleeve over the top of the Chinese coloured wires for the next person to come along?
Haven't gone far but when I seen white and black I was like north america wire black is hot white is nut. Bare is earth or green sheathed lol I was wrong
@@artisanelectrics I really enjoy you and like 3other sparks from the UK the only thing I wld do better wld be to gland more especially with panel board entry cables all your other wiring practices are fine to me except your use of flexible piping like the outside where you have to clip every 10 cm or it gos ccrazy. Can you use schedule 40 PVC ? The one big thing I wild love implemented in north america is your underground armored cable looks like a pain . seen enough installs but wld be so much safer than our regular underground cable
Didn’t realise When I bought my new house that the previous owner had not wired the 2 way switching correctly on the stairs so he’d turn a light off down stairs and have to walk up in the dark! He lived there for 40 years! It was doing my head in as soon as I realised so was one of the first things I sorted when moving in
Re stairs lights. When the dual rcd board was fitted the rcds would have tripped when stair light turned on. So a new 3c+e would have been fitted to resolve
I agree.. would have had a borrowed neutral and usually has a double insulated single feeding it. Used to be the norm when replacing dual boards along with broken ring circuits 😂
As a keen DIYer I find electrical work really easy , what I have noticed is electricians take exception to people doing their own electrics , including the Artisan
@@smitcher minor surgery unlike electrics is not easy To be a surgeon you need straights A,s all the way through then you go to medical school for six years then you are a junior doctor for a minimum of three years then another 7 years before you become a surgeon On the other hand becoming a spark means you need a substandard education and a two year apprenticeship
@@johnnyreggae969 No you just need a God complex... but looks like you have one of them so good luck! I assume after you do your electrical installations you test to ensure that you have low resistance connections, have maintained the cpc, have torqued the screws appropriately, zoned your cables correctly, maintained your ring, etc...
@@smitcher Over the last decade or so I’ve employed three sparks I always go around checking the standard of work and it’s diabolical ,My work is 100% better than the average spark Obviously if every spark was as exact as the Artisan there would not be a problem
@@johnnyreggae969 I applaud you. Let's hope your sparky know-how is better than your maths since "100% better" than diabolical is only twice as good...
Boy are YOU WRONG. Your tester moved a bit. And made contact with the side screw section. German colours. Have a guess everyone. If you said black is Live your right. Think about it. White means nothing = negative OK. BLACK MEANS LOOK AT YOUR FINGERS YES THEY ARE BURNT. that's why they make it LIVE IS BLACK CLEVER. Japan uses purple and violet. PLEASE CHECK YOUR INTERNATIONAL COLOURS OK. What was that bit about 1.5 cable not going into your connector WHY NOT. HOPE THIS HELPS. O WAIT A MINUTE THIS IS FROM AN OLD ELECTICIAN 67 YEARS OLD. Modern phone easy to check. YES.☺
@@artisanelectrics I really would like you to check that. Your test end moved and I bet it was touching the screw bit. I am right about the colours. You check please. Also I have found that American colours are black Live white Neutral OK.
Coffee 10:30am and 2:30pm every day, without fail... For downlighters I'd probably relabel the feed from the ceiling rose junction to mark swapped live/neutral and then wire the rest of the lights in correct colours... Not ideal but that is some epic fail, I mean if they can't even wire the correct colour then there is not a lot going on up top so I wouldn't be trusting anything...
What bothers me a bit: You had three cables in the ceiling, every single one only with three wires (including the protective earth). One feed cable (which should come from the wall mounted switch) and two for the lighting fixtures on the wall. How does the wall switch operates the ceiling light and not affect the wall mounted lighting fixtures?
22:56 you'll be lucky if that 10 year smoke alarm is still going next year. I've had nothing but bad luck with these new sealed in lithium jobs and they've barely lasted a year.
I bought one for 5€ on sale from Lidl more than 5 years ago and it's still going. I know it works because I've had a bit of an embarassing accident with the oven... The battery isn't sealed in though, it's replaceable even though it's rated 10 years.
My FireAngels have worked well, radio-linked. The kids often forget to close door and let out the shower steam, so they get regular "testing" and battery seems to have lasted at least 5 years now
Hey black and white them are u.s. colors although I still recommend checking to make sure the black Witch is our hot is connected to the center tab of a screw fitting. Many people over here do not understand that is a safety feature that the screw side was always meant to be connected to the neutral and the hot was meant to be connected to the further in tab preventing accidental contact.
The wiring behind that light switch reminds me of the mess of choc blocks wrapped in yellow tape I found the other day when doing some minor work on a lighting circuit. I know for definite that the mess must have been created when the house was 'professionally' rewired a few years ago. Must have been Friday afternoon! I couldn't leave it, of course 🙂
Great video as always. I'm not sold on integrated led lights as you can't change the bulb I know they are meant to last forever but a bulb is easy to change and to get some back is a pain. Maybe you could do a video of pro and con on the subject? Thanks
I think you're the only electrician I know that confirms continuity of CPC using a wander lead but how can you confirm the reading you're getting is for that particular circuit?
Artisan Electrics I hope so, there’s a sparky swapping the consumer unit in a week or two, who will be changing the armoured anyway as it won’t reach the new board
"Why can't they just do it right in the first place?" and "Have pride in your work." Are the two things I hear you say a lot, that I say often as well.
I got a question I am going to be training to be a electrician but I been around Electric all my life my dad was a electrician my grandad was as well and I done a rewire in the past with a fully qualified electrician and I done some in my house and it’s still all good my questions is this even tho I had done that been tested and it’s all passed and safe and I am going to college to be a electrician have I done is wrong and not done it even though I done all the safe testing to make sure it’s all dead first and all safe after or what? Sorry long winded I am not good at spelling but I am learning
That is shocking but just because it’s a bad job does not mean it’s DIY. More likely it was a rogue trader especially as wago connections were used. A DIYer will have time to research and not generally do something that leaves a house his family lives in unsafe. A bad trader will take the money, run and not care. Good trades like you should call out bad work but you do yourself a disservice by constant DIY bashing.
Fair comment you’re right there. It’s more the handyman or jack of all trade types who seem to do work like this. Kitchen fitters is a classic example.
@@artisanelectrics Yes, we need to find a new word for the bodgers. And although there are going to be good kitchen fitters I did once find a big name "professionally installed" kitchen where the ring was twisted together cables with ptfe tape wrapped around the conductors that was then shoved in a wall and tiled over. Householder spotted the tile, which was part of the cooker splashback, would get warm when the tumble dryer was on! If you want to see what DIY can do look at the work of Tim on The Restoration Channel. For electrics he uses a Pro electrician for the reasons you state - but he tried a few before finding a good one who's work he is happy with. My point is just because someone is doing something to make money doesn't mean they are good and just because they are doing it DIY doesn't mean they are rubbish !
Hi Jordan, great video as usual, that house is a proper bodge up god knows what's lurking under the floors, coffee time is as regular as you want your your own boss, to answer your question about the UV lamp on the Unilite its for you to check for forged bank notes on your cash jobs!!
In America black is always the current carrying conductor and the white is always the ground wire . The bare is the grounding wire. Also no fixture may be attached to any thing other than a listed enclosure that would be mounted in or flush to the surface of a structure.
all that was missing from those kitchen lights were the spur & hoof marks on the ceiling... great videos Jordan... Took your advice and treated myself to a new set of knipex 13 96 200 pliers they arrive mid week to me... going on 40 years sparking and been through a lot pliers, i can still recall buying my very first one... keep the videos coming enjoy them all...
Hi Jordan do you not code the cooker switch because it’s inside what we call the hot plate I was always told we should be doing but correct me if I’m wrong?
Hi Jordan. Great video. Good to sort out that earthing on the lights. Did you sort the polarity on the kitchen lights or did you have to leave it? Would sleeving with the correct colours be acceptable?
Thanks! I couldn't sort out the polarity in the end so just left it unfortunately. Didnt really matter anyway as the lights aren't sensitive to polarity but would have been nice to be able to fix it.
With fire rated cans you sometimes see single insulated cabled coming from the lamp holder to the connection box, whats the difference between that and the way some of them are wired? Genuine question
