This project was by far the most woodturning I've done in one condensed period and I feel like I really got much better as I turned more stoppers. I also whipped up a quick display stand for the stoppers, and they're now for sale at H&H's tasting room!

I enjoyed each step you went through and learned a lot. Bottle Stoppers or any other wood epoxy resin project is now accessible to me and any hesitation I had is now gone. Watching the errors you may have made and then corrected it was great as a learning lesson for me. Thanks a lot for great contents.

Hey Johnny, just a few cents from me about some products. If you do a lot of epoxy/resin work, I highly recommend you take a look at a 2 part system called Resin Research. A 1 gallon kit costs $115. It's incredibly predictable, 100% reliable and extremely hard as well. It will polish just fine. It's also water clear when it cures and doesn't yellow at all. I've been using it for about 10 years and I just absolutely love the stuff. Second, if you have a vacuum pump, I'd suggest setting up a vacuum chamber for de-gassing instead of pressuring it. Though there are times you want one over the other. These are also another sweet project from you as well. Nice job. Love seeing others come up with their own techniques.

Those turned out nice! If you're going to try a CA finish, I'd recommend using Mercury Flex CA and activator. I do this with pens but it should work just the same for bottle stoppers. My process is: sand to 400 or 600 grit, wipe clean with denatured alcohol to remove any dust and moisture in the wood, 3-4 coats of thin CA, 1-2 coats of medium CA, spray activator between coats, wet sand up to 12,000 grit, and finish off with some Meguire's plastic polish.

Great video. Bottle stoppers look fantastic. I recently turned my first stoppers using the Ruth Niles bottle stopper mandrel which cuts the threads as you insert it into the blank and used her stainless steel stoppers. Take a look at that system. It's is easy.

Those turnings came out great!! Instead of a pressure pot what about a vacuum container to remove air bubbles from the pours? I really need to get a large to try that...
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 5 лет назад
They are used for different purposes and the pressure pot was really ideal in this situation since a vacuum chamber would have caused the molds to overflow. Thanks!

@fredoswego

I assume the pressure pot applies pressure and squeezes any existing trapped air bubbles down to nothing? Is that better/more efficient than putting it in a vacuum chamber and sucking out all the air - because that's what I see normally done.

Good stuff. On the sanding: don’t use a wet rag if you are not wet sanding. That really just complicates things unnecessarily. Also, what type of sandpaper is that? Type does matter, even at lower grits. I use the Norton brand for turning because of the finish and the length of time I can use it.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 5 лет назад
Thanks! And yea, wiping it off between coats probably wasn't necessary but I was trying to expose any big scratches. The sandpaper is from Klingspor, super high quality stuff. I bought some cutoff rolls awhile back and they're perfect for this type of sanding.
@xRMCoaches
@xRMCoaches 5 лет назад
@@craftedworkshop I wipe off between sandings, but just with a blue shop paper towel. It really does make a difference. I was just questioning the wet part.

Love the idea if these. Liquor oak spirals were a totally untapped idea for me. I know it doean't appear you had any issues, but I am curious if whiskey or another liquor could cause issues in that the wood has observed a high amount of alcohol. Does that impact the casting of the resin at all?
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 5 лет назад
Thanks Karl! These spirals were unused, so I didn't experience any issues obviously, but I would imagine that, as long as they were dry, it shouldn't cause problems.

Carbide for hand turning is straight garbage....a softer material will always yield to a harder material, and you don't need carbide to turn wood and epoxy...HSS can have much more aggressive tool geometry, and is super simple to sharpen....that square insert you are using doesn't have enough clearance angles to cut nicely on soft materials like wood and epoxy.....the video and the results are amazing....but you are better than carbide....just had to throw that out there 🍻
