I wanted to make a musical instrument using the lathe. I made this hybrid bouzouki - banjo using scrap pieces of spruce.
Tools and materials:
Lathe: amzn.to/2yq4bMI
Wood turning tools set: amzn.to/2pH5K59
Miter box: amzn.to/2pIkscc
Table saw: amzn.to/2RBf0nT
Drill press: amzn.to/2pJaAPo
Chisel set: amzn.to/2pILO1B
Fret wire: amzn.to/2y9E0L4
Spoke shave: amzn.to/2E74p1w
Classical guitar tuning pegs: amzn.to/2pJxtlE
Bone for bridge: amzn.to/2pIsSjN
For more information about this project, go here:

I also used this online fret position calculator to find the positions of the frets:

A wonderful home made τζουράς (Tsouras). I bet those who put the thumbs down had no idea what it was and assumed you were trying to make another instrument (Dulcimer, Dombra, Banjo , etc) and so were unprepared for the sound and thought it a failure. Whereas those of us who know Greek music and love the sound of the Tsouras (and the Bouzouki family in general) can recognise your achievement here. Thumbs Up!

I had no idea what it was, but it sounded familiar. My grandmother has a few greek songs on a cd, and I was fascinated by the sound each time I would hear it, and now I know what it is too, a Tsouras. I have always liked instruments that aren't "the norm" (instruments I don't hear in my day to day life) and I want to know, what's your favorite instrument in this famely of string instruments?
@dimitristripakis7364

Tsouras is the same neck as 3-string bouzouki but smaller body.

Great build! So many iterations possible - skillet mandolin, banjo, ukelele, scale it up to a mandolincello, any number of African or Asian instruments. I greatly appreciate that it's acoustic. Thanks for the clear and complete video!

A well made video. You didn't waste anybody's time with that. Good job on the instrument, too. I made a shorty 5 string banjo once, using maple for the one piece neck, no truss and no separate fretboard. That was before internet so sorry, no youtube for that. After a couple of years I gave it to a shop/museum in Baltimore, probably still up on the wall there. I had made the 4th fret distance just slightly off somehow and it irritated me greatly, though it didn't seem to bother anyone else.

I have NO talent for guitars but I have lots of talent for the piano and I wood(get it!?)LOVE to see you make a 20 key piano out of wood! I don’t need it to be fancy or complicated. You can do whatever you want but it does have to be wood and 20 keys and that’s everything! See you on the video you will make out of this!

THIS! At 5:02, we see him pound the neck into the body with the help of a 2X4 and a hammer :) I have been repairing old, forgotten, broken acoustic guitars, and every time I have to do a neck reset, the dove tail joints NEVER match up perfectly. I up to my neck in shims, or replacement wood to make new dove tail joints for them, sad to say. This guy did it right the first time!
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 6 лет назад
lol. All the things you say apply for me too. In a video you can kind of hide those things sometimes. But sometimes you get lucky and the joints fit together nicely! :)
@jackpatino7069

Yours was perfect, and a joy to watch. These other guitars that I have been repairing, ugh... It's like the manufacturers went with the ballpark idea of making matching dovetail joints lol. At least they give me the opportunity to learn how to repair guitar necks properly. Keep up the fantastic work!

Hey, I was wondering how the fingerboard holds up usage? I don't know what wood was that, looks like pine to me? I was just wondering if you choose harder wood for the fingerboard. I've been looking for cheap second hand tools, building a banjo or something similar would be fun, at least as learning experience. Not sure if our most common Finnish pine is way too soft for metal strings and I should rather try to hunt down some birch, unless I happen stumble upon some nice laminate or harder export wood. I was going to scrap everything, so it's a game of luck. And since the drill is only power tool I got I haven't yet figured out how I'm going to make thin splits if I have to make the fingerboard separately (I'd love to, it would look nice!)

Hey man, great job on your musical instruments. What kind of wood are you using for your necks ? This one is spruce, but what about your lyra, banjo and so on ?
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 7 лет назад
I used spruce for this build, but that's not an ideal wood. You better use hard tone woods (rosewood, maple, mahogany etc) if you can find them. For my experimental builds I usually use whatever I happen to have in hand.
