How to DIY this fedora style hat by drafting your own pattern from your measurement and sewing on a regular sewing machine.
You can change the size of the brim and make it into a fedora hat or western/cowboy inspired hat.

Thank you very much for making this video. I have seen several videos on DIY hat making. I want you to suggest that you can use a wire round the edge of the brim, the wire can be any thin metal wire. The wire keep the brim in shape. Thank you.

that’s a good point I forgot to mention! On this hat, I wanted soft finish, but if one wants a more structured hat, using double buckram instead of fusible interfacing, and sewing millinery wire around the brim would make a hat hold its shape. Thank you so much for commenting!!

Buckram is very stiff and starched material used in hat making. There are single buckram, which is easier to shape, and double buckram, which is a double layer of buckram and sturdier than single buckram. You can cut out buckram and stitch millinery wire around the edge to use as a structural base for a hat. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you so much for this video. I'm about to go make a Fedora out of scrap metal and this video has removed all the anxiety that I had related to getting the shape right. My plan is to begin with a circular steel ring which I'll heat and hammer into a head-shape oval. Onto that I'll build a framework of 1/8" steel rod, being sure to keep the top Avocado shape, and then weld a patchwork of metal off cuts to the frame to create the final shape. It'll look better than I can describe it I hope, but thanks again for your help!

@@SachisStudio I have a question. When you measured your head with the flexible ruler, the inside of the ruler was against your head. When you made your base, you put the zero on the ruler one one end of the line you had drawn, and half the head measurement (including some material allowance) on the other end of the line. You traced on the outside (not the inside) of the ruler. Were you reading your dimensions on the inside or the outside of the ruler? Reading and aligning the dimensions on the inside but tracing on the outside would have given the base some additional looseness to allow for material. So would reading and then using the dimensions on the outside *and tracing on the outside), because of the ruler thickness. I made a hat after watching your video, and it ended up tighter than I wanted it. I am trying to sort out what I did that was different. Thanks.

Hi Don, thanks for your comment! I’m so happy to know that you made the hat already :) I’m sorry that I wasn’t very clear on this in the video. I’m using my tape measure to measure my head, and using my flexible ruler to copy the head shape as best as I could. I know technically you copied your head shape INSIDE of the flexible ruler, but I traced outside of it because it’s hard to trace inside of the ruler without distorting the shape it’s holding. and that is why I measure the head with tape measure separately and adjust the flex ruler a bit before tracing. Sometimes tape measures stretch out, and flexible rulers are not super accurate, so it’s a good idea to compare the two to make sure of their accuracy. But usually, hat ending up tighter is because of fabric thickness. you can check the base pattern by cutting out the base shape from cardboard paper and fitting the outside of the cut out shape (you can use the brim pattern without seam allowance, too) to your head. I hope that helps!

If you sew a fine wire around the brim of the hat. You could shape the brim the way you want it better. It will form the way you shape it. Sew wire around brim using some thin strip of same fabric as hat.

I have never done that, but I’d imagine it can be done by just reversing the ratios. the side crown draft is basically how the hat will look from the side ( plus front and back shaping), so you can make it look any way you want ! if you change the measurement, just measure the lines to make sure they match corresponding seams of the crown top and brim. I’d make a mock up with cheep fabric to see if I like the shape :)

The easiest way would be to cut the top shape out of the center of the brim shape, add your side. Flip the hat with the top side flush to the table and trace the top opening. I suggest using card stock to create your pattern so it will be rigged enough to hold the shape while you trace your skewed edge.

You have made a symmetrically mirrored shape for the crown opening. Unfortunately, most people to not have a symmetrical head. You should use your flex ruler a second time on the other side of your head to create the second side of the oval rather than mirroring the first side. Your hat will fit much better. Wait a minute, I added the 1/2" seam allowance inside the brim but now that I’ve sewn on the crown, it’s 1/2" too short around(?) -help please!

fabric thickness could really add up- I would try sewing with bigger seam allowance and/or trim down the seam allowances to reduce bulk!

If you don't have a flexible ruler, is there anything that can be used instead?

A flexible ruler would be the easiest, but instead, you could have someone take a photo of your head from above, or set your phone’s camera to the timer and hold it above your head to get a sense of how the base shape should look like. And then, use your tape measure or even a marked string to emulate the shape on your pattern paper. Thanks for the comment! :)

нажимаете настройки и потом субтитры, нажимаете перевести и выбираете русский и сразу переводит. Я не поняла один момент, когда донышко изменяют как форма авокадо. то написано 7,8 дюйма (это очень много, аж 19 см (1 дюйм = 2,5 см). Может опечатка и 0,78, тогда вроде нормально 1,98, почти по 2 см. снизу и сверху. Может Вы разобрались? Помогите.

Gees, I didn't have a flex ruler so I used a stainless steel one. I secured it to my head with a thumb tac and using a mallet I formed the ruler to my head. It will be a few days before the hat will fit because my head is still a little bit swollen.
