Looks awesome Brent! Also, for the mantle, you should use an old beam from a barn and run a string of LED rope lights underneath it. That's what I did to mine a few years ago and my living room is the most modern space in my house.

Oooooo I like your thinking with the LED's and the barn wood. Would be a fun one to mix into the equation. Thanks so much for the suggestion and the continued support.

Looks great! Question, my fireplace has bumpy bricks that are not smoothe on the surface like yours. Do you just keep adding the feather mix until it is smoothe? (I would say some of the brick sticks out more than 1/2 inch in areas)

Hi Brent, looks great! Can you tell me if this would be an okay product to use if I wanted to put a new fireplace insert in later? Couldn't see any info re fire rating and if I need to use refractory cement or if this will work fine. Thanks!

@BYOT could you have sanded the first layer of Ardex and added another one? Wanting to give out fireplace a new look but keep it a cement finish style? I can't tell how it look dry in the video because you moved on to the lime washing stage. Thanks

Perfect- that will work for an ugly brick fireplace my house had done in the 40’s. Unfortunately, the home originally had a tall wood mantle with antique tiles around the inside and a mirror built into it, but they took it all down and replaced with a brick monstrosity. Then we have our original marble fireplace mantle and surround salvaged from our 1886 home, but it’s not large enough to cover that thing we have now. The structural engineer said that removing some of the bricks in order to reduce in size might affect the integrity of the chimney which runs 3 stories. So, I think you provided me with the best alternative to cover that awful thing. Only difference is that I won’t be giving it a rustic look- not my style. I’ll just stick with a smooth finish. Anyway- thanks for the idea!

Why in the world would you remove a stunning feature to convert it to a plain wall... You could have painted the bricks and mortar to update it while keeping the aesthetic, iv you wanted to go crazy you builfd the mortar and surface grind the face to seal. You could have done a whole manner of things. Not to mention if his was the end result why not just direct stick some sheetrock for a quicker and cleaner finish. I don't get it.

I would make the caulk step mandatory, I see soo many diy’s where they don’t caulk the lines of fireplaces or cabinets and it always looks worse than if they had caulked it.

Great video and narration. I have a question, in the beginning you talked about a super smooth texture but in the end it feels a bit rough and imperfect. Was that a limitation of the materials you were using or did you achieve the look you were going for with a bit more texture. If so could you have produced a smooth texture with a bit more finesse? Thanks for your time!

Oooooo Saul. I knew there would be a few die hard brick lovers that would hate this one haha. I am actually a fan of brick, but mainly for exterior uses and this brick color really didn't go with the rest of the space. Something had to change. If brick is desired later on we can always install a thin brick over the top of this very easily. What do you think of the thin bricks that have been used for a while now? Might be using some in the near future on the exterior of the house. In any case thanks for watching and sorry to disappoint for you brick lovers.
