Thank you!! Thank you!!! I’m glad I’m not the only one telling people about watering down the preservative! There is so much BAD information. I just saw a woman on tik tok claiming that bleach doesn’t kill mold, it just bleaches it. Saying that we should use Tea tree oil!! Ugh!!

i have so much trauma from my mum insisting on diluting all soaps when i was growing up. it made washing dishes a really horrible experience. i explained to her many times why we shouldn't but she'd never listen to her. i understand she did it to save money but i'm so glad that it's a distant memory for me now.

That is so true. Good thing my mom realized that it was too hard too wash dishes with a diluted soap. She would always tell us to dilute it according to how we liked it to be once we use it and don't pump out too much all at once so there's no waste

There was a blog I used to follow waaaay back in the day, like way way long ago called something like "Whats inside this thing?" The premise was a guy who would basically take things apart and see how much or what you were getting, like how many peanut butter sandwiches can you make from one jar of peanut butter, or how many ounces of water can you absorb with one roll of Bounty paper towels. Anyway, he did one about hand soap. "How many times can you wash your hands with one bottle of hand soap vs one bottle of foaming soap?" He deemed that the regular hand soap was the better buy, because you could get more hand washings per dollar, but then decided to make it even cheaper by diluting his regular hand soap with water to make a foaming soap. You guessed it, he had to come back and update the blog post to say his foaming soap pump had started to get slimy and gross inside after a few weeks, and so he could no longer recommend this. And yet, we still have people "discovering" this "hack" every day, and thinking they've stumbled across some big grand secret to save themselves money. They haven't. It isn't worth it. Soap is supposed to keep your skin clean, and it can't do that if you keep messing with it.

@@susu9129 Ha! I actually found it when I was typing out a reply to say "I don't think I'd even know where to begin finding it." I remember he did a bunch of cool Halloween costumes, and one year he was a crowd of paparazzi, and that lead me back to the blog. From almost 25 years ago (says he started the site in 1998) 😂 I don't think I can type the url or it'll get stifled, but if you search cockeyed and "how much is inside" you should find it. The guy's name is Rob Cockerham. He is, unbelievably, still updating the site!

I tried this too and didnt like the texture. It wasnt as 'squishy' lol. I didn't even think about the preservatives! Even though I have to be budget conscious, foaming soap is my splurge.

Castile soap is a concentrate you can definitely dilute it in a foam pump about germs add a little bit of rubbing alcohol just a tad. Besides my family goes through the bottle within 7 days. Also soap just binds the dirt out of your hands or body water is what cleans you!

The Castile soap he uses literally says dilute on the battle for many different ways to use the soap including hand soap.

you're still diluting all the ingredients in the formula ultimately making it less effective in washing and preserving. most castille soaps recommend making diluted soap in small batches as these don't have the best shelf life compared to undiluted castille soap

@@jintienle2377 again the whole problem is that MAJORITY of products do not have their products tested to be diluted and stored. even the dr. bronners website states that diluting messes up the preservatives, meaning you'll at most get a couple weeks of use as opposed to several months. if you're using a concentrated soap specifically made and tested to be diluted at certain levels then yes use the directions and do whatever you want with it. but again, most of these products are not specifically formulated to be diluted especially with someone's mysterious tap water

You can get actual soap paste that’s meant to be diluted and you can use in a foaming dispenser. It’s expensive though.

I actually tried this years ago when I had an empty hada labo face wash bottle and I wanted to make my handsoap foamy... it was not good. i didn't even know much about the bacteria and mold issue but the whole texture also was not it. I realized it at once that the kind of soap I had was not meant to be diluted and kept. thank God I only made very little to check so I didn't waste a lot of soap

@@udontevenwannaknowbruv I have never had a better one. but my skin was dehydrated oily then and it made it soft and hydrated. the only reason I don't buy it now is cuz i can't source it easily in my budget. itthink it is worth trying at least once. you can get the pump once and if you wanna repurchase you can buy the refill

Oh dear. I can't lol. The only reason I kindaaaa dilute liquid soap/shampoo/conditioner is when the large bottle cannot pump anymore as it ran out; swishing some water inside to get just one more wash/use. Not sure if that is hygienic but welp, trying to use up the remaining product in the walls of the bottle XDDDDD

That's fine just as long as it's not overly diluted and exposed in open air...near a flush toilet... in a humid bathroom... that is shared by other people. Just transfer in a smaller transparent container and use up as soon as you can. Throw out if you start to see it look turbid or smells funny.

@@mdml0 Quite an interesting take. I think it miiiiight be good for a few days to a week or two depending on how aseptic the dilution was done, the environment where the diluted product is stored and used, and the container used. Might be good in a pinch, but personally I wouldn't do it. While parabens and some preservatives can work even at low concentrations (and may even be working even after dilution - need more research and number crunching on this), bacterial load cannot be determined unless you take a sample and swab it for culture or do some analysis work on it, and it is possible that a microbial load enough to cause potential harm can be present in the diluted product before signs of spoilage are noticeable. Personally I'd err on the safe side by using and storing the product as intended. If cost of the product is a bit steep, there could be more affordable alternatives. Or DIYing it with a soap/liquid handwash making kit, checking if it has a good preservative system and proceeding with caution to not contaminate the end product.

@ryuichiro.sakuraba yeah there's no way to be completely sure without testing. The key takeaway is to add just enough water to access the leftover product in the container and get another 2-3 uses max. I'm sure a lot of people do this to avoid wastage. It's not ideal but if they're going to do it then might as well do it with a few pointers. But then again I've been known to cut open tubes of lotion and toothpaste. 😅

And goodness, why do they make those tubes so hard to finish? 💦Guilty well in cutting those toothpaste and lotion tubes haha~ Isn't it satisfying to cut open the almost spent tube close to the part before the spout, then scooping out more than a dollop of product? XDDD One of the few tubes that could almost be emptied would be those professional hair colour tubes. 🤔😆

THE "RULE" WITH THAT: If the packaging says dilute it with specific amount if water, then you dilute it with water. If the packacking says nothing about that, then do not ever do it.

The only time i put a bit of water on my liquid soap is when it's basically 'empty', good for 1-2 more washes just enough to scrape of the remnants before it goes to the recycling bin. I hope that's fine. 🤷‍♀️

What if you don't dilute the whole refill container, and only dilute the small dispenser? I wouldn't need the preservative to last a super long time, maybe a week to a month? But maybe that's too long also.

i use dr. bronner’s castile soap for diy foaming handsoap (about 3 parts water to 1 part soap) and i have to refill it every week or so. i have no issues with the “slimy bottle” bacterial problem and my hands are very clean, i swear!! 😂

I actually have done this and didn’t encounter any problems so I think we just managed to use it up b4 it went bad? I didn’t mean to, we only have foaming hand wash bottles in the house now because my mum loves them and we accidentally bought a refill bottle of normal hand soap so I just diluted it so it wouldn’t block the pump. I also only did about half and half compared to this guys 1/5 or so.

Same, we dilute 50-50 and it seems fine, the texture is rich and not watery. We also use it up pretty quickly. It's not about saving money, my partner just prefers foams, and I can't find foaming soap refills.

@@bonie_and_beans still, like she said, not a good idea because the preservatives aren't formulated for doubling the water content. So far the fact that neither of us have gotten an infection may just be dumb luck. Maybe U can buy refills online? I usually find the foaming handwash refills next to the other handwash refills in the supermarket, but maybe not as popular where U live?

Hm... Not entirely sure if it would work but if your micellar water probably foams up a lot, then it miiiight be possible? EDIT: I thought it was the dispensing part lol so oops Micellar water works due to the surfactants. 🤔Also micellar water can kinda foam when you shake the bottle but it still works after doing it, so dispensing it with a foam pump, the product should still work? 🤔 Transferring it to another container may be a potential avenue for contamination and the preservative system may be compromised if it reacts with or gets absorbed by the bottle and pump material. However, most of the micellar water are packaged in toner bottles that is exposed to air every time you use it so maybe it is alright in that aspect? The foam pump may just squirt it though if your micellar water has a formula that does not foam up. I just tested it and it squirted lol.

@@ryuichiro.sakuraba I know absolutely nothing about this really, but I feel like switching it to another bottle should be okay as the face wash that's supposed to be in the foam pump bottle is very similar to micellar water. For clarification: I'm using the bottle of Hada Labo hyaluronic foam cleanser with Garnier dry & sensitive micellar water. But I feel like any micellar water will work, so weird that yours didn't.

I love foaming soap. Its a sensation thing for me (ADHD/ASD). I tried what he did and it is NOT the same at all. I tried so many different ratios and it just wasnt the same. I still buy foaming soap, but get the big refill bags instead of individual bottles. Still works out to being pricier than regular liquid soap, but its one of my 'splurges' lol

What do you think about the eco-conscious liquid-free soap/detergent pucks (powder pressed/molded into blocks and individually wrapped) that are emerging on the market? Since they are liquid-free, customers have to dissolve them in tap/distilled water in bottles to use as hand soap, all-purpose cleaners, or dish soap. I have considered purchasing these, but wonder about mold and bacteria growth.

I can attest to this. Was trying to be cheap by using BBW body wash as the base for diy foam hand soap with regular tap water....until I realized the original scent started to change over a couple weeks and after examining the bottle noticed a marked increase in viscosity. Slimy bacteria growth! Ugh back to buying REAL stuff...

@@KanoogThis! And make sure the container is clean. I spray with vinegar then follow with hydrogen peroxide. DO NOT INHALE as mixing these can cause toxic gas but it will kill germs to prep for making foaming soap. Also can add 1 TBSP alcohol to water when mixing and don’t make more than 2 weeks worth of soap. Be smart and you can do this, I’ve been doing this for 15 years. If you are uncomfortable then don’t.

I have a crunchy-type friend who will grate her bar soap into boiling water to make liquid hand soap, claiming it’s cheaper and better for the environment bc they aren’t having to ship mostly water and wasting fuel. Is this good or bad?

I don't know if it's actually better for the environment - boiling water uses a lot of energy and the water has to be pumped to their house. I think it would have the same dilution issue though.

I buy regular hand soap in the giant bottles at Costco, and it comes with 2. You would be suprised how little soap you need to get a good lather. I use maybe 1/3 a pump. Bought them like 6 months ago and I barely started the 2nd bottle. And I wash my hands frequently.

It's fine as long as it's not sitting too long. Or use a distilled / mineral water, if they can sit long in a bottle at the store and we can drink it without having issues. So i don't see why can't it be use to make a foam soap. So it should be fine. Or maybe add a little alcohol in your diy soap.

Pov: your school doesn't have money so when they were forced to put soap in every bathroom during covid they started diluting every bottle so much so that at some point the soap was slightly foamy water. (don't ask me why they didn't just put soap bars, I have no clue either)

It's the same. Its ok to dilute any soap including shampoo as long as you use it right away. Just only make enough for a single use. If you dilute & leave it sitting around for a long time it will have increased bacterial growth.

That's why you use distilled water and a drop of alcohol 😅😅😅😂😂😂 foam soap is nothing more than the concentrated gel soap with water and alcohol... right? I use it so fast there is no time for bacteria to grow and I've never ever had that problem. My bottle stay clean and have never molded. Would like to see the proof of this... and I don't use to wash my face... interesting...I do this not only to be frugal but to try and not use so much plastic. Maybe I'll just switch to castile soap and not buy fancy soap. 🤔

It's fine, use a distilled/ mineral water instead. If they can sit in a bottle at a grocery store for a long time and allowed to be sold in public and consume without any issues, then it means it is good to use for a diy soap without growing any bacteria. Or add a little alcohol and a little soap too, just a little.

This is bad advice. Microbial contamination often comes from the air, so distilled water doesn't help. Alcohol needs to be at over 60% before it'll preserve, and even then it doesn't kill spores. As stated in the video, diluted preservative doesn't preserve as well as the concentrated preservative. I hope you've just made this up and you don't have any actual relevant qualifications because everything you've written here is painfully incorrect. Please reconsider before giving people advice on any topic in the future.

Everything's fine because the bacteria and other stuff on your hands hasn't made U sick enough to worry yet. Doesn't mean she's wrong and what you're doing is safe. I say this as someone who has done it b4 and had 0 problems as well. Just because you haven't crashed a car yet, doesn't mean you're an excellent driver you know?
