This is a project I have been working on for the last 6 months. I initially wanted to build a DIY foil assist to help me get onto waves earlier with my SUP foil board. After a few tweaks, a lot of help from people on the foil.zone forum and a lot of 3D printing, I had a working prototype.
I then began to see the new down wind sup foil boards hitting the market. I thought that this sleek shape would compliment the foil assist perfectly to get extra speed and even earlier entry onto a wave. I set about building a 6ft 8" by 25" down wind sup foil board. Swift foiling helped me out with a shaped EPS blank which I then sandwiched with cork and carbon fibre under vacuum to make a really nice and light board. This board with the foil assist, is amazing. I can now catch unbroken waves with ease and can enjoy conditions that were otherwise impossible for me to have fun in.

Excellent job and nice video! I have been planning a DIY foil drive for a little boost in the surf and for DW. Good to see the success on yours!

Cool build and great video! Very inspiring 👍👍 For the non engineer/handy types of people (asking for a friend) would you mind doing a video or blog post on how you sourced the parts from which supplier on Aliexpress and also your process for the 3D Printing?

Glad you like the video. Unfortunately I haven’t got the time right now to do a video like that. There is quite a lot involved. None of it is particularly difficult and all parts are readily available. The best source of information is foil.zone. That is where I started.

Great idea on the dw board. Epic you can make them. What’s ya thoughts? Motor powerful enough to efoil? I was thinking a battery on the backpack. Such a cool space the diy efoil. Thanks for video!

I have since built a few different versions. All still with the 6384 120kv motor. To Efoil I use a higher voltage battery. A 10s2p or 12s2p is enough to use mine like the gen2 foil drive product on a prone board.

What cabling did you use for the 3 phase wiring on the motor. I’m almost there. Also which waterproof box is that?

have you thought about purchasing the new GEN2 Foil Drive Assist? Are you still happy with your DIY version?
@jamesdixon2219

I’ve been through a few iterations since this video. The latest is as powerful as the gen2 and I have built a prone board that takes the faux drive internally. I’m really happy with my DIY version. 😃

Unreal, well done!!! How many litres in the board do you think, and what weight?
@jamesdixon2219
@jamesdixon2219 Год назад
Thanks. It all works really well together. I was quite surprised! It is 125 litre and weighs 7.2kg with deck pad, foot strap and leash. Probably around 6.8kg without.

Thanks. I use a 6384 120kv BDUAV brushless and sensorless motor. It works really well for this application.

I joined foilzone with an interest in building my own e-foil. To save me reading though 100s of pages are you able to link to a parts list/ websites etc? How many hours would you expect a self build to take after all parts have arrived?

I love the engineering behind it but would also be interested in the list of parts to save hours of researching them. I would donate some money to compensate you for your efforts.

Hi, currently doing my own too. Do you confirm a 8s3p battery would fit with the 150A flycolor controller in this box please ? I m currently choosing my controller. Tks a lot
@jamesdixon2219
@jamesdixon2219 Год назад
The standard Flycolor 150a esc is meant for a maximum of 6S so will not be ok for your 8s3p. You need an esc that will work with 8s. Are you using 21700 cell batteries? Do you have a BMS on discharge? If so, what is your max amps? Let me know as I might be able to suggest an esc that fits your specs.
@guenaetienne561
@guenaetienne561 Год назад
@@jamesdixon2219 I have a 8s3p with BMS only for charging, Molicel 21700. My motor is a 6384, for the moment I have the flycolor flydragon V3 ESC 80A, but nothing is connected, I just received everything today but I think it's risky for my battery to use this simple esc. Let me know what do you think. Cheers
@jamesdixon2219
@jamesdixon2219 Год назад
@@guenaetienne561 that esc is fine with the 33.6v you will get from the 8s. I think it’s max for bursts is 90A. If your cables and connections allow, you have the capacity to be outputting more amps than that. I have not tried that ESC although I do have one on order for a 7s3p battery I have with an 80a discharge. The ESC I’m using is a Hobbywing EZRUN MAX6 V3 which is fine with 160A but does cost more.

How much did it cost to build the foil drive?
@jamesdixon2219

Around £700.

@jamesdixon2219

@@remyruff it really is. All except the 3d printed parts can be bought individually on AliExpress. You just need the time to put it together. Local e bike battery builders can build the battery.
