DIY Guinea Pig Cage Makeover 🚮 

As someone with a three story c&c cage set up for my 5 guys, there's pros and cons to stacked cages. But there comes a time that even if it means less space for yours pigs, you have to do what's best for you and how you care for them. With that many pigs, we couldn't blame you for wanting a little more space for yourself in the your piggy room. And don't forget you could still do free roam floor time for them as well to get them out of their stacked cages for awhile.

I've had my cages in just about every configuration possible and for me, stacked has been the way to go. It takes a lot of grids but it's nice to not be bending over and cleaning on the floor all day. There are definitely ways to use your space to your advantage, cages don't have to just line the wall. You could make u-shaped cages, I even had kind of a z-shaped cage at one point. It's a lot of work so if you're not that in to the idea you're right to keep brainstorming.

I 100% agree about the dog pee. I put my elderly chihuahua down last month. I literally could care less about him peeing in the house. That didn’t effect his quality of life. I literally cried that line to my therapist, “I mean he’s been peeing in the house for the past year but I don’t care about that!”

I have somewhat of a stacked cage situation going on since I have to share a bedroom with my 5 pigs. I built a table with 2x4’s a sheet of plywood and hairpin table legs from Amazon. It fits a 3x6 cage on top, and I have a 3x5 cage underneath with lights so it’s not so dark and I’m able to pull it fully out to be able to clean it easily. The biggest pro is that there’s a good amount of airflow and natural light to the bottom cage since my table legs are 28 inches tall, but the biggest con is having to use a step stool to get to the back of the top cage to spot and full clean. But it’s so worth it. I could’ve always customized the height by using 2x4s as legs like SkinnyPigs1 did lol

Stack cages save so much space and they can still be really big. All of mine are 2x6, one 2x5 and a 3x5 stack. You can custom build them to have a stand for under cage storage too. And your piggies would still have tons of space.

I know this " oh let's make a change, it will be so much tidier after that" and than work, work work, than have a look and it's worse than before. After much more work it's finally done but it can easily consume a whole day to get the final result where everything is they way imagined

Currently I have a 7ft x 3ft cage. I have 2 herds and they are stacked in a way…. The first cage is on the floor while the other cage is on a table above the first cage.

I would definitely do a U shaped cage along the back wall and down each side of the room, stacked. Then you can split the cage top and bottom however you see fit!

I think you should definitely go with stacked cages! You can still make the cages pretty big like Autumn and Austin’s cages but it would give you more space and be more organized, making things easier on you. You will also have more room for floor time, so they wouldn’t really be loosing space.

Personally I would still do stacked cages even if it's barely a small downsize for some pigs. Depends on how much space, though. I have bunnies, but I find when I'm comfortable in their room and like the way it looks, I have an easier time keeping up with chores and spend a lot more time with them. Your pigs are also all older, so I'm guessing a lot of them aren't that active.

It is ultimately your choice of what to do with your room, but I had an idea of what you could do to do stacked cages and to give the pigs more space. If you three level stacked cages, it would give the pigs lots of space because there would be piggies on the bottom level, the middle level, and the top level. So it would give you more space and them more space, but it’s up to you guys how you want to configure the pig’s room! 😊

I don’t think they will lose space, you can still let them free roam. Your floors will be cleaner and you won’t have to walk in all the poos. Just my opinion. You shelves look great!

Definitely stacked cages. With your current setup, it makes being in the room and hanging out with the pigs a chore, because theres no room for humans. You're standing in their home and on their poop and hay and have to watch your step. At least for me it would lead me spending less time with them.

look forward to seeing what configuration you go with! I am never happy with my piggies cage, they must have had about 6 different set ups since i got them 🙃

If you own the house you could replace both the bedroom door and the closet door with a pony door (essentially just the bottom half of a Dutch door) & use a retractable baby gate in the hallway or a retractable baby gate in all three areas mentioned. Just makes things mentally a little easier. As for the homes (Im new here so I'm not sure how many pigs you have) but you could have the herd running the length of the left wall before it hits the door and the center window & make a second level for them as well. The 2nd biggest groups you could essentially have the same thing just cut in half on the right side since they aren't as large. For the duos you could set up a new shelf spanning the length of the wall between the two door ways & have 3 - 4 levels if you have the bottom shelf at the floor. Visually it might be nice to make an arch at the top of the shelf & place your neon sign inside of the arch. You'll basically have a small hallway that spans the length of the center window and a small hallway that can get you to the closet and out easily. Which you can then use as storage if you make deep shelves in the closet. Hopefully this all makes sense & you get something out of it :,) & pls note I am guesstimating size to the best of my ability lmao

So let’s see, you have 4 herds, one with 4 piggies needing about 16sq feet. If you did stacked cages in a U or L shape I think you could split the 3 smaller herds along the bottom and the bigger herd along the top. If you used the full long wall I think you could definitely give the piggies more than the 16sq feet they need and split the bottom level so each of the smaller herds can get about a 2x5 maybe 2x6 depending on how long the wall is and if you go U shaped definitely more space than that even.

Love the hair! My 6 are living in a hybrid cage built on a 4×8 sheet of plywood supported currently on a plastic banquet table. (Barrowed ideas from Little Adventures setup). Thought about stacked cages but wanted a wider space for the herd. I lived in an RV for two yrs. I didn't want to subject the piggies to a narrow existence. Gets annoying after awhile.

glad to see your piggies run still in their cages as before. personally, i dont like stacked cages, gives me vibes of a prison. right now, the animals look like they live in lovely cosy homes, once you stack them, it will have a whole other vibe in the room. but choose whats best for you. thanks for your content, see ya at patreon ;)
