This is exactly what I was looking for. I want everything in my garage concealed. No open shelving where things collect dust. But the best thing about this design is that with price of wood being so high right now this design will save you money over building regular style cabinets. Good job!

Thanks for creating this video. I was looking for some storage ideas in a nook in my garage. I followed your video and got it installed in a few days. I will say that when I was cutting the dados my saw ran into a knot which messed up my cut so I just flipped the board over and cut the other side. Worked out well. Much appreciated!

Great build, going to use your concepts for our garage as well. Have watched your video and gone through the description and comments but you stated 1/2 plywood in the beginning, and 3/4 when screwing down the base. I am guessing 1/2 because you have 1/2 inch datos for the door fronts and it would then be level. Just wanted to confirm. Thanks!

Very cool and timely. We just moved and I'm needing extra storage in the garage and was thinking along these lines. Are you concerned that the doors may bind due to expansion of the 2x4's and skewing those grooves? Thanks for posting.
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop 4 года назад
Thanks man! I made sure that the dados were pretty wide for the 1/4” ply to have room. I’m not overly concerned with as much room as they have.

Excellent. What amount of weight seems safe? I have a garage with exceptionally high ceiling and am curious know if there’s a rating for lbs per sq for of space hanging from the ceiling , will it make a difference if the ceiling to my garage is the floor to second story ?

Very good job on how you install everything just to let you know I do garage door motor so just let you know your emergency release rope and handle it is tied off wrong so if you want to fix that that will be good I can’t tell if the handle is upside down or not so make sure you get that fixed and put the proper knot On it normally a half hitch on each end of the rope is perfect and if it’s too long cut it burn the end of the rope and put 1/2 hitch knot on it and it will look good

Would using lags to attach the 2x4 to the roof substantially increase the holding power?
@jeaninepayne9303
@jeaninepayne9303 6 месяцев назад
Great video. Someone mentioned a concern about potential repair on your garage door spring. Would those cabinets need to come down if that happened? Only ask cuz my garage door just had that happen and it was right before a rainstorm that the door got stuck open! Also, what nail gun were you using?
@joshargabright9484
@joshargabright9484 Год назад
Did you use structural screws to hand the ledger board and overhead board? I was hoping to see a lag bolt instead of 3” screws. Nice work though.

This looks awesome! I'm thinking of doing the same, but also doing same kind of shelving along the walls of the garage top to bottom. It would have to be a lot shallower (probably about 20 inches) so the cars can still be parked, with overhanging top part. What do you think?
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop

It did darken some areas on that side of the shop. I’m thinking of finding something simple (maybe even battery operated LED’s) to hang under them. Great question because it’s something to definitely consider

Thanks for sharing and nicely done…although not sure why you use the large wood dimensions. It’s completely overbuilt. Why not 2X2’s, 1/2” plywood, 1”X4” trim pieces (or 1X6 instead of 2x6 on the side)…etc? What you built can probably handle 10+ times the weight of what you would ever put there. Having said that - thanks again for sharing!

Building it on the ground would make it easier in assembly, but it would be a bear to lift the finished cabinets up to the ceiling and snake it above the garage door rails. IMO, building it in place is the way to go, but think through sub-assemblies.
