This DIY homemade gym cable machine set up will cover all bases for a pulley system.
You’ll be able to do cable crossovers, set up a high pulley for exercise such as triceps extensions and lat pull downs, and set up the low pulley for exercises such as rows and bicep curls.
The exercises you’ll be able to do with this complete home gym cable pulley machine are endless and only limited to your imagination.
===
Home Gym Cable Pulley Machine Materials
===
Here’s a list of the materials used in my cable crossover system. You can find most of these at your local hardware store.
➡️ (2) swivel pulleys ShreddedDad.co... or amzn.to/3bKVa6c
➡️ (4) spring links amzn.to/2XdzB7f
➡️ Clamp set: (4) thimbles + (8) rope clamps amzn.to/2RlMg42
➡️ Tie down straps amzn.to/34gnt6W
➡️ Vinyl covered wire rope amzn.to/3aSC9vx
➡️ Delta quick link (optional) amzn.to/2wNkKFB
➡️ Loading pin (optional) amzn.to/38a8PjV

===
Setting Up The Cables
===
First thing you’ll need to do is set up the cables. This is the step that takes the longest.
Once the cables are set up everything else is very fast.
➡️ Add pulley to each cable
➡️ Add 2 clamps to the end of each cable
➡️ Make a loop with the cable end and insert the end through the clamps
➡️ Make the loop smaller so that the thimble fits tightly inside the loop
➡️ Tighten the nuts on the clamps using a socket wrench
The end loop set up should look like a dog.
The bolts (legs) point down and the tail (open end of the cable) points up.
If the tail is between the dog’s legs then you did it wrong.
===
Loading Pin Set Up
===
The loading pin is what will carry all your weight for this whole home cable system. All you need is a strap or a delta quick link (optional).
➡️ Pass the strap through the weight plate hole
➡️ Thread one strap end through its own loop and you’re done.
==
Cable Crossover Set Up
==
The cable crossover pulley system uses both cables.
➡️ Wrap a strap around one corner of the pull up bar
➡️ Attach a carabiner to the end of the strap
➡️ Attach carabiner to the pulley
➡️ Repeat on the other corner with the other cable
➡️ Connect both cables in the middle to the loading pin below using a carabiner
➡️ Attach a strap to the loose ends of the cable to use as handles
==
High Pulley Cable Set Up
==
This cable set up requires only one cable
➡️ Wrap a strap around the center of the pull up bar
➡️ Attach carabiner to the end of the strap
➡️ Attach carabiner to the pulley
➡️ Connect one end of the cable to the loading pin with a carabiner
➡️ Attach a strap to the loose end of the cable to use as handles
==
Low Pulley Cable Set Up
==
The low pulley system uses both cables.
➡️ Wrap a strap around one corner of the pull up bar
➡️ Attach a carabiner to the end of the strap
➡️ Attach carabiner to the pulley
➡️ Connect one loose end of the cable to the loading pin below
➡️ Wrap a strap around the bottom corner of the rack opposite to the first pulley
➡️ Attach a carabiner to the end of the strap
➡️ Attach carabiner to the pulley
➡️ Connect both cables at the middle with a carabiner
➡️ Attach a strap to the loose end of the cable on the floor to create a handle
==

I did this slightly different. I used some steel I-beam clamps to attach the pulleys to the beam in my basement. I also made my loading pin out of some pieces of 3/4 inch black pipe (floor flange, 12 inch nipple, and end cap). I drilled the end cap and tapped it for an eye bolt. The rest is pretty much the same as your setup. Thanks for the video. This is a very versatile setup for me.

Firstly, great videos. You inspired me to do this! I also borrowed ideas from Usawa fitness. I especially like your hitch pin idea. Just a couple of things to add for people: the thickness of the cable will be the biggest factor for your safe working load (material and thread design etc also matter) and to maximize this you should strip the cable of the vinyl where you clamp. You have to use the thimbles and clamps associated samples with the bare stripped cable when done this way! Also from the comments and your link it seems you used 1/8" cable coated to a max outer diameter of 3/16". The break strength of a single cable when is all is done is likely in the ballpark of 250 lbs if stripped (max break strength divided by design factor multiplied by termination efficiency which for your cable is approximately 80% (I used typical values and this could vary)). If you use both ropes at the same time you could lift a load around 500 lbs because the tension would be divided by 2. On a single arm movement I wouldn't go much past 250 lbs. This is probably enough for most people but only works if your strip the cable as mentioned. Thicker cables are available (i.e. 3/16" coated with PVC or nylon to 1/4") which could increase your safe working load. However, for safety I would still advise stripping the ends where you make the loop to maximize "termination efficiency"

Great video! Worked wonderfully and I love having the tiedowns around! I will say that if you happen to have a squat rack that's NOT fastened to the wall, I recommend weighing down the back end with a loaded bar, some plates, or something else. I'm not saying I almost died today when my (wooden) rack started to tip forward, but I might have had to mop up a puddle before finishing my workout.
@ShreddedDad
@ShreddedDad 3 года назад
Lmao 🤣 glad you found the video helpful and improvised to fit your rack
@davidisanidiot1181
@davidisanidiot1181 Год назад
For anyone who's watching this and having problems with their cage wanting to tip forward when they use their pulley, I bought a couple of those five gallon paint buckets from Home Depot, filled them with about $6 worth of Quikrete, then put the lids on and used ratcheting tie downs to lash the buckets against the two rear uprights on my cage. (I didn't even bother to mix the concrete -- just poured the dry powder into the buckets.) The whole process cost me about 20 minutes and 20 bucks, and my rack is now rock solid when I use the high pulley.
@jefflye8679
@jefflye8679 Год назад
I've recently discovered snatch blocks. Between those and the tiedowns you turned me onto, I'm able to change the heights of the cables and add complexity to the pully system while using my original cables.

You’re supposed to remove the vinyl where you’ve attached the saddles and thimbles at the end of the wires. The vinyl adds about 1/16” to the diameter of the wire, so if, for example, you are using 3/16” vinyl coated wires, make sure the pulleys are made for 1/4” wire, not 3/16” wire, otherwise the pulleys will damage the vinyl coating of the wires. Good video.

Found some package deals on amazon with 2 heavy duty pulleys, a 2.5m 8mm cable already with double back loops and 2 carabiners for about £24. Just need to get the straps and then Ill make this 👍

Can you attach a diy cable system to a Olympic bar on a squat stand on the higest level if you have nothing else I have the short squat stand from rogue and I would use the diy to do high to low cable flys

You could probably attach the straps to the bar rests without the bar. I think the bar would be unstable.

@@ShreddedDad yeah that's the only problem the thing this can be so simple but the people selling make it hard on everyone cause why don't they just sell some stand not to talk just decent height for diy cables maybe s pull-up thing put no you have to buy a tall squat stand that probably fit everywhere or a pull-up tower or risk it not being solid attaching it you wall theres nothing solid in where I live the walls are soft and everything it's not even our house it's rented so I can't

With the fly setup, should I include a pulley on top of the loading pin? This would balance the pulling force, so that one has to exert an equal amount of force on both sides to lift the weight. For example, suppose that I only put a loading pin, and one side exerted a stronger force due to strength imbalance. The load would get lighter for the other side. I am not really familiar with the pulley mechanics

@ShreddedDad
@ShreddedDad 4 года назад
I haven't had this issue. What I'm thinking may be happening is that when you cut the cable's slack it's not on the center of the pulley's roller. Is that what it is? If that's the case you may have to play around with the position of the anchor points.
