DIY Homebuilt Hovercraft

This video describes how I built my hovercraft. I did not use plans for this build. I adapted and improvised as I worked my way through the build. The build time for the craft was approximately 1800 hours over the course of a year. Every weekend and evening I worked on it. As the project came closer to completion, it pushed me harder to get it done. I could not wait! It performed really well. About 58 km/h on water with 3 people on board. It is able to climb a reasonable slope on land. If you like the content, please subscribe. Sincerely, Robert Tymofichuk

Built a UH13T in AK. Used a 12hp Briggs as a lift motor, and a 3k mi. engine from a wrecked Suzuki Sprint. I had a similar scenario with a EFI and computer control, but the old guys talked me out of using it. They, and now I refused to allow EFI/Electronics for "Bush" craft. It had to be KISS repair capable in the remote. We liberated a carb, from one side of a duel carbed Corvair Van (140ci) which matched the 61ci requirements and flow volume of the more modern 1000cc Suziki fairly well. When I rebuilt the carb, the directions that came with the kit even had a float setting for marine applications. We made our own intake and carb adapter plate from tube and plate Al. The ignition worked out sweetly as they still had distributors with mechanical vacuume advance. Cool cap. The 2:1 reduction was multi V-Belt sheave drive. Ran her on the South Fork of the Koyukuk 40mi south of Coldfoot Alaska, above the Artic Circle.

I would dream my school days away looking thru the Universal Hovercraft catalog. It was one of the few times I would go to the post office with money order in hand and order plans thru the mail and then study them. My goals for flight overtook my hovercrafting diversion but one day I may go back and revisit them. Popular mechanics also had a really neat single lawnmower engine hovercraft build that looked like a neat way to get into the sport. Circa 1985 if memory serves.

I wanted to purchase the unit for a tour in Edmonton but unfortunately the 2 guys that designed and built it had a falling out. One kept the hull and the other kept the motor and drive. I have a few videos of it being tested at CFB Edmonton and Lake la Biche. Wonderful job of restoring this unit.

The wooden pulley and idler is fantastic. Absolutely no problems. At first I tried a solid piece of hardwood for the idler, was fine for a bit and then warped badly as the moisture level in the wood changed. Then I tried laminated plywood and no issues as the plywood construction alternates the grains of the wood layers. Sealing it also helps absorb any moisture.

@roberttymofichuk1276
@roberttymofichuk1276 Год назад
Hi! In the duct, the bottom 1/4 or so of the circle, is a splitter that directs that air into the hull. The air flows through the hull and out holes I cut in the hull into the skirt material. The skirt segments are particularly open and the air inflates each segment and spills out under the craft, lifting the hull. I hope this helps! I found this document on splitters. On the first page of this document is a diagram that shows the air flow. www.ijmer.com/papers/Vol4_Issue5/Version-5/IJMER-45052128.pdf

If it is not patronising, you have done a great job; the hovercraft is brilliant. Sadly, I do not have the glassing skills that you have. Your craft would be too small for my needs as I not only need to circumvent the isle of wight but travel from the island to the mainland for socialising; she will need to be at least 6m and have a lift engine too. It is very choppy. Thankfully, as Blighty is where hovercraft were born, there are companies that make smallish and very big hovercraft. We also have the world's only daily hovercraft service (to and from the Isle of Wight) but I am yet to go on Hovertravel's new big Griffons. Best wishes David

If I build one, I would have picked the Universal make, the one that can fly to 5 ft. I have a 1.5 car garage and is tight for a work shop, I am trying to build an airplane in it, Yours is bigger and better, but mine are well lit and insulated except I cannot use the expensive electric heaters like those people in Quebec or Manitoba with cheap hydro power. 1/4 of what it cost in Ontario.

@atlantisdiving1
@atlantisdiving1 9 дней назад
Yes, the craft floats like a boat and it water tight. Not a drop comes in. It would bother me if it wasn’t. When the craft is floating, it behaves like a flat bottomed raft. It is very stable, you can jump up and down near the side and it barely moves. The downside is that it is almost impossible to paddle to move it as it is not hydrodynamic. You would need a long pole to push off the bottom to effectively move it.

what kind of fuel consumption does it get? how much weight will it carry? what would you change? my sone just rolled my ford hybrid which I was thinking of using as a doner car and using electric motors for thrust and lift, I would like to ask your advice on the project.
@atlantisdiving1
@atlantisdiving1 11 месяцев назад
Fuel consumption will depend on cruise speed. Generally, hovercrafts get better mileage than boats because there is less drag. On a river, current has little impact on your speed. Hovercraft lift capability is related to the surface area of the craft, the larger the area, the more weight it can carry. If you design the lightest possible components, you gain payload capacity. My craft can cruise at 58 KPH with 3 - 180 lb adults, and still have about 200 lbs of cargo capacity.

@atlantisdiving1
@atlantisdiving1 Год назад
Hi Brian! Hovercraft lift is a factor of the air pressure generated on the area of the craft. This unit has a good sized hull. I can easily carry 3 passengers - I have not tried more but I think I could easily carry one more. On land achieving lift is fairly easy. The challenge is to achieve lift on water and get to planing speed. My first craft, UH-12T2 was too heavy. It achieve lift easy on the shop concrete floor. I remember dad hauling the unit out onto the grass for its first time out of the shop, it was beautifully painted, I was beaming for pictures. I reved up the engines and it didn’t move! Boy, I learned a lot about weight and lift! I modified the craft to lighten it, balanced the weight better. It worked on grass but had difficulty achieving planing speed on water until I did more modifications. Life is one learning experience!
