We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ru-vid.comUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

Truly demonstrates the power of HomeBridge! A lot more is possible with the right programming knowledge. Also the system works great with built in siren on the Ring Floodlight Cams I already have in HomeKit under HomeBridge! This video is a winner!

Great stuff, thanks Shane ! I use the Aqara hub M2 which exposes the alarm in homekit. It requires the Alert system running from the Aqara app but it integrates quite nicely, it makes bleeps at arming/disarming but the speaker is not loud at all (pretty good for a door chime however). You can arm and disarm differnt alarm modes automatically (with IF conditions on Aqara sensors) and you get push notifications when triggerd or mode is changed. Great setup explanation, love the siren idea !

Thanks for watching! Yes, this would be a great way to add an additional siren to your Aqara security system. Simply turn on the siren when the Aqara alarm is triggered. 😃

Very cool automation! Oh, and I love how you integrated the ad into the video. Clever! I've been wanting to get into HomeKit for years now, but I never could really find a legitimate use for it. It just sounds so darned cool, but so far that hasn't been enough to make the leap. This might be the first thing that makes me actually break out the credit card and start making some orders. Thanks much!

thanks Shane for sharing your experience. I have a traditional security system installed on my house, it's difficult to program it and is not convenient at all, I was thinking about having a siren+motion sensors+homekit and told myself Shane should have a video about that. and I was right! I wish HomeKit was more mature and I don't have to deal with third party apps.

Great content Shane! I liked the topic and I see it had success! My proposition is to do another security system without using HomeBridge (I’m quite sure 80% of people here don’t use it) and instead using an HomePod as a siren for example. I remember also your review about the Onvis sensor, that also has a siren. Or for example using an AppleTV for the video of a camera or audio. Just a proposal 🙂😉

Suppose you put the system on “away” mode, make a rule in which a sensor (or whatever) triggers “siren away” and make a rule where the trigger is “alarm is activated” and the action is whatever you want to switch on. The “siren away” will only be activated when the system is in away mode, but not when the system is in another mode.

Hi Shane, thank you very much for sharing all this knowledge on HomeKit, really helpfull! As I am new to HomeKit and currently building a new house, I am soaking up the knowledge so I can automate the new home exactly the way I want it. Now I just have one question regarding a DIY alarm system; what if someone scrambles or hacks my Wifi signal? Will that completely shut down HomeKit including my alarm or do you have a solution for that as well? Thanks for your reply and keep up the good work!
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 года назад
Hey Alex. In general, HomeKit runs and communicates locally, so even when internet is out it should still be able to perform as usual. Of course you won't get notifications and things like that away from home if there is not internet connection. And with regards to Homebridge, it depends on the plugin. I don't think the security system plugin requires any type of cloud access, so I assume it would still work locally too.

@johndoe6970

I just use conditions that are setup with the Eve app and the Home app. No need for HomeBridge. I have several motion sensors and door sensors in the house. The conditions for my alarm are 1) after 10pm 2) master bedroom door is closed 3) motion sensors detect motion. If all of those are true, it turns on all the lights in the house. Once one specific light comes on, my HomePods play an alarm sound at a specific volume. It was a really easy setup and works incredibly well. The door sensors are a must, because if we need to get up to let our dogs out or get water, it stops the alarm from going off. Once the door is closed again, it's active again until the morning (or the door opens again).

Hi Shane. Thanks for making all these videos! Are there any of the HomeKit sensors that are able to tell if a door/window is left open when the “away mode” is activated?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Hey Thomas. So you'd have to set this up via automations. So, technically, the answer is yes, any homekit sensor would work. You'd create an automation, like in the video, that says WHEN the door/window is open (trigger), IF away mode is on (condition), the sound the alarm (action/scene) or whatever you want to automate. Hope that helps.

Thanks Brad!! I know you like your DIY solutions! I'll be honest, I do like off-the-shelf stuff with native homekit support (you know I like to keep things simple) but when it comes to Security Systems for Homekit, we just don't have many options AT ALL. That's when I like to get creative and try to fill those gaps. And I know you are a PRO at doing that! I'm really happy with how well this solution works. Kudos to the developers for making such a great HB plugin. AND I agree... that dude at the door was super shady... 😂

Good video Shane even if I think you can avoid using home bridge. In fact it’s over one year that I have implemented a similar alarm system with Onvis contact sensors that incorporates a siren (so it is identified as an alarm accessory too). I haven’t yet an external siren but I obviously also could use it and associate it with Onvis alarm system state (away, night, and so on). Moreover I used motion sensors too that trigger the siren as you suggested in the video.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Thanks Marco! I do like that the Onvis sensor exposes the siren to HomeKit, but I eventually got tired of that device and all the phantom notifications. That device had some real potential. But yea, if you have any other "security system" that is exposed to homekit, including Onvis, Aqara, etc. you could set up similar automations and accomplish the same thing.
@marcopallotta1452
@marcopallotta1452 3 года назад
When I bought that device I was tired of phantom notifications too (I set to be alerted only when there isn’t nobody at home) so I contacted directly Onvis: they told be that it wasn’t their responsibility and they explained that it was an HomeKit issue (so Apple responsibility). At the end after some months (and upgrades) I think that this problem is now fixed (that is it’s runs ok in my condition). 😉

Conditional automations are possible using the native Home app via Convert to Shortcut.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Good point. Still not as straight forward tho. For example the method I used has multiple sensors that can trigger the automation. Not sure how you’d do that in the home app without creating separate automations for each sensor.

One question though, do you have a link (or just a product name) for that glow plug at the end?? To show the state of the alarm? That’s so smart! I can’t seem to find anything like that though. At the 16:15 timestamp
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Hey Bryce, thanks for subscribing! That is actually an old iDevices smart plug that exposes that little "night light" led strip to homekit. Unfortunately, I believe this product has been discontinued. You can use the same idea for any light that exposed to HomeKit.
@brycewilson115
@brycewilson115 3 года назад
Thank you for the quick reply! Happy to be here! Dang I was worried about that. All the “smart night lights” I’ve googled have seemed way over the top with features. I just want a subtle glow I can change colors that won’t be a glaring light in the dark! If I find something I’ll report back here in case someone else has the same question.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
@@brycewilson115 thanks! One light that I like to use for status the same way is the light on the Aqara M1 hub. Of course, it is also much more than just a night light, but if you end up with Aqara stuff anyways like me, then it's good one for that also.

Great video! If one wanted to add a physical keypad at the entry door to disarm this alarm system with a code would that be an option for this HomeKit alarm? I am not sure if there are any keypad alarms that work with HomeKit as I am relatively new to it?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Thanks @JayInPEC ! There currently aren't any keypads that I'm aware of that would work with homekit. Abode makes a keypad that will work with their alarm system (which supports homekit) but the keypad doesn't get exposed to homekit so you wouldn't be able to use it in a DIY setup like this.

The physical siren with the smart plug is a nice touch. I just use all six HomePods on highest volume with a siren tune that's available on Apple Music.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Nice! I've done that in the past too. I actually like the siren a little better since it doesn't mess up what's playing on the HomePods, plus I feel like the automation happens just a little faster this way. But a great and creative solution either way!

Just got my Apple TV 4K and am setting up things in HomeKit. Looks good. I have seen your Eufy2 vid and watched this vid. I wonder if somewhere in your vids you have something that shows what I am looking for? Scenario - peacefully sleeping when we are awoken by a noise (maybe a Homekit notification (can they override the do-not-disturb on bedside iPhones?). Clever stuff (please define!) then shows views of all the Eufy cams on a multi-view page on the bedroom TV. Don't want to set off a siren but would like to be awoken and offered the cam views to see if I need to grab a gun and start checking out the alarm area or acknowlede and go back to sleep. Have you something like that pls Shane? btw, really enjoying your content! Great job.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Thanks Randall! I really like that idea. Currently, there is no way for app notifications (like from the Home app) to override DND. However that should change with the upcoming Focus in iOS 15. I really like your scenario idea. Unfortunately it's a bit advanced for the native capabilities of HomeKit. The problem comes from not being able to trigger many shortcut actions from home automations. For example, you can open up the HomeCam app on your Apple TV in a shortcut, displaying your camera grid, but that can only be done in a personal automation/shortcut, not a home automation. The only work-around I can think of at the moment is to use something like a PushCut (app) notification to trigger on your iPhone when motion is detected. That notification can then present you with options, like opening the home app or even opening HomeCam on your Apple TV. In case you missed the video on Pushcut, here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cUbXnCSZJq0.html Hope that helps and gives you some ideas. I like this idea... might have to try it out for myself. My biggest worry would be too many false notifications. I'd hate to wake up with a notification every time a bug flies in front of the camera at night.

@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Thanks Gregg! There are some work arounds that you can do without having to rely on homebridge but it won’t be as robust as this. About a year ago I made a video showing a similar method, without Homebridge, and using am a HomePod instead of a siren. You could combine and mix and match some of the methods in the two videos I’m sure if you wanted. But I do definitely like the homebridge method. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wNRvWU073SY.html

Great! I have already did it. However I have added a delay switch in order for me to be able to disarm the security system without the phone. Maybe it's a good idea to let us know a way to keep the system "alive" in case of a power outage. Finally, could you please send us a link for the small light? I created today something similar by using the aqara hub light setting the brightness to 10%, however I don't know yet the power consumption and I am looking for something smaller.

Do you mean using an automation and “convert to shortcut?” The main issue I see is that you can’t use multiple sensors as the trigger (that I can think of). As in the example in the video, if either one of the two sensors is opened it will trigger the automation.

You should be able to use geolocation to arm as you leave. You can definitely use voice commands. The only thing about disarming the system with voice is that it requires authentication on your personal device... so your phone must be unlocked, etc. (don't want someone shouting at the HomePod through the window to disarm the security system).

Shane: Your videos were influential in my finally downloading and trying HomeBridge. I installed it on a home server I've set up and leave running 24/7. I used HomeBridge to expose my two Nest thermostats and seven Nest protects to Homekit. And, I can use it for even more like you have here. In fact, I was thinking of expanding it to include a home automation adaptation of my existing, old, hardwired, unmonitored ADT alarm system. I found it difficult to understand. Even though I've actually written programs in my life. Go figure. But, I did get it working. Well, actually it just showed up in Homekit up a day or so after I first tried to get it functional and thought I had failed. But, I find that the Nest devices keep vacillating between response and no response in Homekit. I've searched in vain for fixes. I was wondering if you, as a user and advocate of HomeBridge, could point me to a source that might help me find out why it is dropping off Homekit like this? TIA
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Hey Tom. Since I don't have any Nest products and haven't used the Nest HB plugin, I can't say for sure what the problem is. It'll probably require a little troubleshooting. I'd first determine if it's the plugin's configuration causing problems as a place to start. From there, maybe you can figure out what the problem is. The Nest plugin is a very popular one, so I'd imagine you should be able to find a solution. There is a very active Homebridge community on reddit, discord, and maybe Facebook also. Maybe that would be a good place to seek out answers and support. Good luck!

Hey Shane, you did create the automations with "Controller for HomeKit". Is it only possible with this app or can the same automations you show in the video also be done with the Apple Home app?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 года назад
Currently, the Home app doesn't give us the ability to add those custom conditions, as seen in the video. So you will need a third party app, like Controller for HomeKit. There are others out there that do the same thing. For example the Home+ app and the Eve app (free) should also allow you to setup these types of automations.

Hi Shane! I am starting with this and I would like to know if it is possible to make a security system only with Aqara products. I am thinking of 2 or 3 Hubs (M1s, G3 camera) and door and window sensors. This to start and then be able to grow with the system. Thanks a lot

Hey Sebastian. Sure, you can use Aqara for that. Aqara is a great DIY solution for an alarm system. The only downside is that you don’t get certain features like professional monitoring, cellular or battery backup etc. But if those things aren’t important, than the Aqara devices and sensors work great as an alarm system.

Anyone in your home app will get a notification on their devices when the alarm is triggered. As far as alerting the authorities or other contacts, that is a little more difficult, since that would require using a personal device (such as your phone to place a call or text) and home automations run on your HomeKit hub. If you really wanted to get there, you could probably set up something using pushcuts and maybe an automation server. @ShaneCreates

I'm not sure I don't use Siri too much with my Security System. I like to use buttons or other ways to turn it on or off. It sounds like it may be a naming issue. "security system" is also a device type which may be part of the confusion, not to mention whatever you named the actual siren. And Siri will always require you to authenticate turning OFF a security system on your iPhone anyways , since it's a secure device.

I want to have a status light based on 2 MyQ doors, 1 Zwave lock, 1 Homekit lock and one Aqara Window sensor. Each accessory is exposed either through the Aqara hub, Homebridge (MyQ & SmartThings) or directly, all have expected status in Homekit (Zwave lock is a bit slow). If any are open/not locked, I want two lights to come on red (I got that part). If all are closed/locked, no light. It is escaping me. The scenes for turning on the lights and turning off the lights are fine. This is a simple programming problem. I've tried Home, Eve, Controller. Any tips?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
You might just have to set up a number of automations. One for each accessory, with conditions. For example, WHEN the window is closed, AND the door is locked, garage closed, etc, THEN turn off the lights. You can do this with Eve or the Controller app. Hope that helps.
@ginjeff
@ginjeff 3 года назад
Thanks@@ShaneCreates. I have now done this using Eve (2 for each lock or sensor) and in the process found the big issue with my previous attempts: one lock (Z-Wave) exposed through Smart Things and Homebridge was not reliably showing status. It seemed fine in Smart Things, but most of the time it did not reflect in Homebridge and hence Homekit. Removing it from all my automations allowed the other 4 accessories to do what I want. Now I have bought a Kwikset Premis to replace that, and unfortunately it is defective - worked for about 5 minutes :(. My other Premis works.

Yes, that’s correct! It’s a great way to add an additional siren to your existing Aqara setup. I haven’t tried using the siren outside. I don’t think this one is weatherproof but if you got one that is, you could certainly use it the same way as long as you have somewhere to plug in in.

@@ShaneCreates I think that a disadvantage of a Homekit DIY security system is this. The lack of a continuously notification.
