We made our very own homemade drum sander! It was quite the engineering challenge, but so fun to do something different here. We have wanted/needed one of these for years and it's going to make sanding a little less awful! The sander we were looking at cost $1200 and we were able to build this one for around $200 (we had the motor already) saving us $1000!

Really good build and a pleasure to watch! I like the clean and simple look of it. As you mentioned in the video, bolting down the motor is a good idea. Prevent that big mass form moving and shaking.

I was thinking of doing this...with the guts of cheap harbor freight 79 dollar drill press(for the motor, switch, cord, belts, pulley, etc.) & a replacement conveyor belt roller with bearings, but needed the housing idea. I think you just helped me bridge my gap from concept to drum sander. Thank you! Ill be grabbing your plans for the housing. Keep up the good work young sir.

This came out great! Love custom shop tools. The split grit feature is mad smart. It'll be neat to see how you guys upgrade it overtime as you get more hours of use on the sander.

I have built a drum sander in the past from plans on RU-vid and it just never worked very well so I'm wondering how this is working for you. It has been a few months so is there any problems you are seeing with the design. I'd really like to build this but don't want to spend north of $300 and then find out it has problems. Please do another video showing how it's working since July. Thanks.

Awesome design and Awesome video. I think the only thing you might consider changing is put a couple of 1/4-20 carriage bolts through the hardwood block. So it's not hanging on just those two small wood screws.

Did you see "Stummpy Nubbs" sanding machine, by useing pvc pipe and a gear system you can change the drum out and just have another pipe for a different grit.
@Woodbrew

I did, but for us, it was more complex than I wanted. I also prefer using the larger shaft material.

Thanks a lot. You just added another project on my "to do" list. Question: since this sander is for small projects, would it be possible to add a third grit of sand paper. Maybe 220 and do all the sanding on one machine. Can't wait for the plans. Keep up the great work.

Cool project and one of the easiest out on RU-vid! My only question is how do you ensure the feeding table is parallel to the drum? Regardless of the stiffness of the table or hinge.
@Woodbrew
@Woodbrew 4 года назад
The way we did it was by using the table to flatten the drum. We spray used adhesive to attach sandpaper to the table then raised the table until it made contact with the drum. By doin this you sand the drum flat and parallel to the table. 👍🏻

Maybe try setting it up with some kind of spring loaded deal on the table that presses it up against the work piece. It would need to be a fairly stiff spring.

A few questions. I know that this is a bit late where the video was posted a month ago but I did actually see it when it was posted. Anyway to the questions. What is the overall footprint that that takes up I including the table? How much would you say it weighs? Is it light enough to where it could be put on a shelf? It would most likely be under the workbench for my situation. Have you made the updates to it that you mentioned in the video? Are you using cloth backed or actual paper backed sandpaper on that? Ok last one lol. Do you think that the drum could be covered in velco so that you could use the velcro backed sanding strips on that so the grits could be swapped out easily? Ok so that was more than just a few I guess 😆. I have really enjoyed your videos and think it’s great that both of you work together on projects in your shop, wish I could get my wife to help in the shop lol.

Would you be selling kits for this with all of the CNC routed parts? I have a beast of a motor and can get the shaft parts from McMaster Carr. I just don't have the CNC router to make nice cuts, especially for the drum stack.

If you can make one really clean template out of MDF, I do not see why you couldn't use that as a pattern and do this with a router table with a pattern bit. I did something similar for an arch trellis I did for my wife, just a thought. Good luck and let us know how your build goes.

I’m sure you don’t need it, but did you consider putting a tension pulley on the drive belt?
@Woodbrew

Because the motor is hinged we basically just use the weight of the motor as tension. These things really don't need much tension at all. Yes, though, I did consider it during the design phase.

Hi, great video thanks 👍. Given the nature of the chipboard inner of the melamine and the vibratory nature of the machine you used do you have any concerns about the fastenings coming loose/failing over time? A breakdown of the costs and time taken to build against a comparable shop bought machine would be very interesting to see if you get a chance. Cheers.

"100% dust collection" - cut to angle showing big pile of dust. I like the thinking in this but there are so many flaws that it really shouldn't be paid for... and like you say,it has been done before and its freely available. It's the opposite of when that guy made a slightly modified version of a paulk bench and gave it away for free and got called out on it by Jay bates!
