Don't get grease on that fancy counter top! Weigh down box for free hand. Slow and easy is best for winding. Less braking tension on the spool is good. Pressure builds up under layers of tightly wound wire which shorts out that thin insulation.
actually the structure wasnt an issue at all. im kind of glass i used a box because it was super quick to build. it took about 2-3 min to wind a pickup and its much easier to stop and fix errors than a motorized winder.
