Something much of the audience might miss, but many who follow will agree. That, this man already has a filter, but made another one for the benefit of others. With a special focus on it being gravity fed for those who are without power in these trying times. 10/10
Sir, I enjoyed your video very much. Your English is a little bit off. I commend you for it. You made it uncomplicated and easy to follow. In my opinion you did excellent. 😊
Agreed, however, in my mind I'd prefer to allow the charcoal to penetrate and wash through the sand to clean the bacteria all the way through. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but it would give me the peace of mind for a bit more filtering work before drinking.
In North America you cannot use just any sand. Some sands in, for example, the United States are made from the process of recycling broken concrete and is hazardous. Other sands contain particulates. If you are purchasing sand, make sure you get a certification not only from the seller, but from their source, if they are just a reseller for its origins. My recommendation is using a “Virgin” coarse sand.
Thank you for providing this. Also, you did a great job with the language. As a certified and licensed water worker, its good for anyone to understand the cleansing of the water supply for use in such conditions. For the prepared water in the bucket it is a good idea to also keep some bleach near just as a precaution. Lastly, I'd recommend crushing the charcoal and maybe pre-washing the sand. Go Ukraine! Your efforts are much appreciated.
I helped make this filter in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia in Spring 2011 with an engineering professor from Loren’s SC as an experiment. It was designed by his students. The water pumped up from the river required boiling and filtering. We used varying sizes of and and gravel in a similar sized barrel. We were using a commercially available filter, but experimented with this one and it worked very well.
What is important for many of us to understand is that the charcoal you are using has no pre added lighter fluid. I really thank you for sharing this with us sir.
This is both the easiest and best off grid water filter I've viewed on RU-vid. Thank you very much. I'm a Prepper and have several shop bought water filters. They're great, but I have worried about losing them or them breaking as I didn't understand how to make one or why things are done in a certain way. I started trying to build one recently and I think your design will suit my circumstances very well. Thank you so much for making this video. By the way, your English is excellent, and very clear and easy to understand.
Thank you so much for teaching me this. I just moved to the mountains with my children and I’m trying to learn how to be self sufficient so my children will know what to do as well. This is a really big help🙏🏼.
Robert, Great video. Very clear and easy to follow. God bless those of you in Ukraine suffering from the attacks from Russia. We're praying for you here in Texas USA.
IF I had the benefit of another bucket, I would put the bucket after the barrel. The bucket would have the charcoal in it, the barrel would have the gravel/sand in it. This way, the charcoal is the final 'finish' filter, and I could change out the charcoal as you suggest. Because 'activated carbon' is created in a certain way to increase its surface area to remove more contaminates, I would use your 'real' charcoal, which has no chemicals to catch fire easier applied to it, and I would crush it down somewhat to increase its surface area to make your charcoal more efficient at filtering. Thank you for taking the time to make this to help other people in need! May God watch over and protect you/yours.
I agree with your observation/suggestion. Would the second bucket receive the water from the first barrel at the top or the bottom? Would the water pressure from the first barrel be enough to force water up and into a second barrel with charcoal?
Yes, you are right, I saw your remark 'too late' and placed a similar comment because the organic (adsorption) filtering capacity of charcoal might go down quickly...
Thank you for taking the time to put this video together . It always surprises me just listening to you struggle with the language but it was clear and concise to me and you should be proud of yourself for learning a language not native to yourself and present such a great video , tutorial, thank you again 🙏🙏
Thank you for taking the time to make this great demonstration and explanations video while making this filter. Love the accent, well done. I see that the comment below are constructive and helpful, some of them I never knew? Thanks to all who placed comments that fine tuned this filter. Great video, maybe there will be another one soon, we are not all handy people, and that is why we look at these types of video's 🤓👍👌
I absolutely loved this. Very informative. I would love to understand better what you were trying to describe when you were talking about the tank being full and not empty and the need to have the faucet/spigot high and not at the bottom of the tank. It sounds like you want the tank full of water at all times because that allows the charcoal and sand to kill pathogens and bacteria. I wasn't clear on what you were saying though. It seemed very interesting, and I wanted to understand better. The part about a fabric filter above and below the charcoal was absolutely brilliant! It is so easily replaced and immediately reminded me of the charcoal filter in my coffee maker!
This filter WILL NOT kill pathogens and bacteria. It will filter debris and turbity. In essence, this filter will make the water clear and make it taste free. Depending on the source, this water is probably safe without further treatment. However, to be sure there are absolutely no pathogens or bacteria you would still need to sanitize the water by boiling or adding a few drops of Chlorine.
The surface area of the sand helps collect micro-particulates and a lovely place for 2 types of beneficial-bacteria to convert toxic Ammonia to less toxic Nitrites and the other type to convert Nitrites to much less toxic Nitrates. Those beneficial-bacteria die if the sand dries out and takes 6 weeks or so to re-populate. Chlorine off-gasses in 24 hours naturally. Carbon hardwood-charcoal provides a ridiculously high surface area to bind other toxic contaminants and eventually clogs so you replace that. You can even make your own activated charcoal at home. Don’t use the processed charcoal-briquettes or squares. I think he covers most of the above in the video, maybe quickly. This is a beautifully simple and effective setup.
I'm in usa and our charcoal is different I believe, but I have a thing to make biochar and I bet I could do that instead! I'm gonna try this weekend! I've been wanting to set one up. Thank you so much for your awesome instruction! This saves so much $
If charcoal is not available, you can make charcoal. Simply cut pieces of hardwood into manageable lengths. Build a fire or use a wood burning stove, or fireplace. Place hardwood pieces inside a clean metal paint can, place the lid on the can, then put the can into the fire. After a period of time, remove the can, and open the lid. The hardwood should be usable charcoal. Break up into small pieces.
Really good job buddy !!! thank you so much ... I hope you and your family are Ok there. Be brave. Be strong. Resist. God always win. Best regards from Argentina.
You are so cool. Thank you for helping me with design and showing me what to do for clean water when there is no electricity. From 60 yr old mom and grandma of enough children to keep me busy.
Thank you. Very good information for all of us. You taught us clearly and demonstrated how to build this. The charcoal is biochar-type charcoal which is different. We are living in dangerous times and need this simple technology.
Actually it would be activated charcoal made with.bamboo. silver and copper will kill bacteria and pathogens and shyngite will purify water .a tensor ring will change the structure of water stagnating unwanted particles making it safe to drink.
Excellent buddy ..being plumber by trade ...that's how we learnt water filtration takes place in large quantities ...well with mechanical means ofcourse
Excellent idea! For us here in the United States, we can purchase activated charcoal that's designed specifically for drinking water filtration. U.S. Water Systems is one such company. Thanks for the informative video 👍
@@beatcat1265 Channel "Primitive Technology" has few videos how to do charcoal out of wood and mud/clay. But please be prepared to binge watch everything, it's very addictive.
Tying in all caps indicates YELLING and SCREAMING, certainly not your intent. In most forums all caps are frowned upon. Sentences with all caps is more difficult reading than all lower case, and many folks will not bother reading posts in all caps.
I usually wash both the sand and charcoal before layering them in side the barrel. once the water runs clear i then add to the barrel. the sand bucket and charcoal bucket i will over flow it down garden rows that need to be watered;
I am curious to learn - could you comment on knowing the origin or safe quality of the sand and rock. For instance, did it come from a quarry where chemicals were used? If so, how would. you go about cleaning it, or just knowing to look elsewhere for those materials. Thank you and great videos.
You need to rinse that gravel well before putting in there or you’ll end up with lots of fine particulate that will end up in the water. For this, I recommend another barrel with quarter inch holes in the bottom
No...thank you, Sir! With all that is happening in the world and future events to surely come, it is important for all of us around the world to not take for granted what we have as far as modern conveniences. I will make this filter exactly to your specifications. Home Depot is right around the corner from my house and will have all the tools and supplies you have proven to work. Thank you, Robe the Builder. Panther Strike
Creating a filter from a plastic container is like drinking clean water from the toilet. Plastic containers have plasticiser(micro plastic particles) that will be released in the water and will not be filtered. Those plastic particles take about a month for your body to evacuate them but if you drink water everyday(which you should) they will bulk up and create health problem. Always drink from glass or metal container especially when it's hot.
I personally would put the charcoal layer below the sand. Simply because the sand will filter out particulates that could possibly clog the charcoal pores
Thanks my water sucks with rust and stuff I try not to drink it only for baths I have most of what I need to build this it's worth a try to clean water the cheap way thanks brother 😊😊😊😊
As the last person commented, I have also heard never ever to use charcoal briquettes to filter your water that it can actually poison you. They say to use food grade charcoal. My info comes from prepping channels and that’s all they do is prep. Everyone please be safe.
Thank you my freind. A very useful and informative video. Thank you for the English translation. It was better than a lot of people who actually speak English. 👍🌎
Yes he was very clear and didn't drone on like a lot do on here talking more about themselves than what people log on to actually learn from. Well done.
This is way better than the normal 2 liter bottle filters you will find on video how to's. But, two things. You want to make sure it is pure charcoal and nothing added to it. It would be best to break up the charcoal chuncks. 2nd. Why not add more charcoal and less sand? The charcoal is what is doing most of the work. Thanks for the video.
We can use Cowboy Charcoal here in the U.S. It is free of any fossil fuels and/or ignition helpers. The one thing I do question about this video is the order in which the filter aggregates are placed and leveled in the barrel. I like the mechanics of it though and it's something to work with. #SupportUkraine Subscribed, bell rung, commented, upvoted, liked, shared .... may the algorithm gods smile favorably upon your channel.
Hello... it's a practical approach that probably works but fysico-chemical I would prefer to have the charcoal filtration at the end. Diverse big particles can reduce the organic filtering capacity of activated charcoal because in general charcoal has a very wide but narrow structure of carbon channels capable of a high adsorption of organic compounds in the water.
It’s a great video but maybe you should rinse the different elements before using them so you can use nearly straight away. For instance charcoal has a lot of dust, it will clog your other layers in no time.
