DIY: How to build a storage in a piano bench

For $38, this is how I built a storage in my piano bench to store music sheets, music books, cables, etc and keep the top of the piano clean and elegant.

Really well thought out, planned and created. The application of the vinyl with the ruler was a genius idea. Great project thanks for sharing.

Painting will last much longer rather than applying the adhesive vinyl

I have a new CLP575 with a bench that I wish had storage. I called the Yamaha dealer and found out that Yamaha DOESN'T make a storage bench. I thought, "I wonder if my bench can be converted?" The first thing I did was fire up youtube. Your video popped up and it is perfect for my needs. Your bench before the conversion looks exactly like mine. You did a really wonderful job and your video showing your process is perfect. I only have one question for you: what is the make and model of your portable screwdriver?

So I just finished adding storage to my Yamaha bench like the one you have & it came out great. Only problem I found is that a month ago I took my piano books to OfficeMax and had them spiral bound so now they don't fit too well in the 9" width...s%#t!!!!! Oh well, it was a fun exercise in DIY. Thanks.

cyberita hahaha sorry to hear about that. My books did not seem to fit quite exactly and they bent just a little bit but it was ok since they are not big and their covers are not hard. Still better than keeping them up on the piano all the time. I'm glad you enjoyed building your storage and I wish I can get a look if possible =D

This is the exact project I’m trying to do for my daughter’s piano bench. Thanks for posting! Your tips on why not to use other hinge types was especially helpful.

This is amazing! I just followed almost every step and the result is perfect. Bonus point: all existing screws are used, no more and no less!

Shukraan. This kind of tinkering is just my style, and it's damn hard to find someone who thinks like me. Either you're a handy musician or a musical handyman. I can't tell which.

+Yahya Alramadan is it ok if I choose the opposite side of the bench to install the hinges? I think it would be nicer because ppl won't see the hinges on the Yamaha logo side. But we will sit on the opposite side. What do you think?

Yeah, that is a good idea. I just made it the way I did just because of a feeling that the direction of the top opening should be this way. I don't know where I got this feeling from lol but yeah, putting the hinges on the opposite side would be a good idea to make them invisible to others and preserve the original look of the bench.

That’s awesome !!! I liked your video, very helpful. I want to do the same with my bench, but I wonder if it’s makes loose stability to the bench? Since the the seat holds the wood frame.

Thanks. Honestly, I did not have any issue with the seat stability.
