Learning how to build and install a wall frame will act as a guide. Which in turn will save you time and money when building projects. The method I show is a very simple and easy way to understand the concept behind the most commonly build dry laid stone structures in the US a retaining wall. There are several different styles and methods to building a wall frame. This is the one which I find works the best for me.
Recap - A 1:6 Batter is a very common batter. For every 6" up the wall comes in 1".
Height of wall (36") : by batter (6) = 6", other examples 48" : 5 (1:5 batter) = 9.6"
Tools:
Step 1)
- Square
- Level or straightedge
- Tape measure
- Marking device (shown is chalk pencil found in welding section home improvement store)
-Screw gun or screw driver
Step 2
- Wire cutters
- Rebar (+ safety cap or a water bottle works well)
- Level small
- Hammer
Materials:
- Screws
- Wood = 1"x4" or 2"x4" I prefer the 1x4 since you can easily hammer a the rod next to it. Plus wrap the wire and tie strings to them.
- Wire, found in home improvement store in rebar section with concrete forming supplies.
- String line
- Binder Clips ("spring clips") Medium works well on the rebar rods.

I like the ring on the top of the batter board rods. I also blacksmith and will do that to my batter board rods also. I use two pieces of wood bolted together for top of wall reference, and paper clips on the rods to hold the double lines. Thanks, Rick

I always enjoy your videos. Thank you. BTW, I love the simplicity and usefulness of your batter-board design. I’m going to make these.

Thank you for making this Mark! I was wondering about your method for making frames. I can't drive any stakes into the ground on my current project (a sidewalk is in the way), so I'm relying on heavy rocks holding the frame at the top of the hill. It's working so far. I have a curved section and I don't know how to set up strings to match the curve. If I don't learn how to do it, I think I'll be left to building the wall in an octagonal shape or eyeballing it the best I can with my strings as a general guide. Thanks again for the videos. They have been a help!

Hello Sarah sorry I'm just figuring out this hole comment thing on RU-vid. I'm sure your done by now. I normally build legs on the bottom of my frames on front bottom when I sit on driveways. Then use a couple rebar rods to get me into the back. The best tool when you have this issue is either cut a 4' piece of plywood the negative shape of your frame. Then Duck tape it to a 4' level. Then hold it up the wall as you build. I prefer using the Sola 2' Inclinometer when building curves. I set it to a frame so I have the correct angle then go to town. It never lies! GAME CHANGER.. Just have to watch for stones that bump out ie bull noses. I'll have to do a Video on this. Great question. TOOL: Sola Magnetic Analog Inclinometer www.sola.at/en/products/nam-p3624

Love your videos! Is this a single sided retaining wall, as in is there only one layer of facing stone and none behind?
@RockinWalls
@RockinWalls 3 года назад
Thank you Arda. Great question. NO! this is a Single Sided Wall Frame. The wall is DOUBLE sided wall. The walling style I build is a Yorkshire which is front wall back wall with hearting (Packing in the middle) There are styles of single walls. But to keep in simple for most folks building walls they should always be double unless you know the style. Most folks in similar industries try to build dry laid stone retaining walls and build them as single. THEY WILL FAIL! You must have a back support system just as you would any gravity wall.

@@RockinWalls Good man! Thanks for the advice. Am attempting to repair and add to a stone wall in Ireland...this video has been invaluable.

Great video! One thing to note. The pronunciation of Yorkshire! The shire part is like shirt without the t! Like the terrier and the pudding.

How do you get the angle to cut the end of the board that's resting on the ground?
@RockinWalls
@RockinWalls 5 лет назад
You can simply lay your board long at the base and just use the baseline as a guide to get the correct angle across in order to cut it.

I've noticed your walls bay last long, Why if built well should last at least 500 yrs, here in the uk most of our dry stone walls have stood a 1000yrs and longer, we use an A frame, good pad stone on the base, And tools such as a bolster chisel, chipping hammer, you call a brick hammer, etc.and lines levels.

EXACTLY! Well said Michael. Here in the states you would be surprised how many companies think they can reinvent how to build dry laid stone walls. For example add gravel in the back, build a single faced stone wall, add landscape cloth behind a wall, add mortar and call it dry stack - that's my favorite by far! LOL As you have said simply just set the stone on a good compacted earth base, set up some line pins or bars, add string lines and get to it. Most dry stone walls even in UK typically need maintenance every 100-200 years. UK has some of the oldest know dry laid stone structures to man such as the Skara Brae believed to be 5000-7000 years old. If a dry stone wall fails not by a natural disaster sooner than 100 years someone built it WRONG!

Hi. I lived in the UK 40 years. Pronouncing the names of places isn't that hard. It is "Yorkshire" - so say "York-sheer" not "York-shire" to rhyme with fire. The counties are, indeed "sires" - to rhyme with fires, but the county names themselves have the sound of "sheer", as in "York-sheer, Lanca-sheer, BARK- sheer (not "burk-sheer), and so on. Give it a try. Otherwise, you sound like a yokel.

No need to be a prick. I’m from UK and knew he was talking about Yorkshire.

Prick? Its good advice & friendly! @@MarcusT86 I agree, is "sheer" to say shire, but only when its at the end of a placename. Shire used alone or as a prefix to Horse, is pronounced Shire . So we are all yokels really. Arr
