Advisable to get food safe, non toxic UPVC tubing (not PVC) which is unplasticised PVC. Also use aquarium grade silicon glue to seal pipes as is non toxic.
PVC piping has been used in drinking water applications for decades. Literally just about every home in America has them. Most have them for the waste pipes and (most relevant here), many use PVC piping for drinking water. The hydroponics community has also been using PVC piping forever. Translation: the piping he used here is completely fine.
This is a great build, but there's important information afterwards that you've left out. My guess is you're going to run this a quasi dutch bucket/aeroponics setup, where the water is pumped to the plants periodically and they stay in net cups (which we see, for example, at 9:29. You could easily run it as NFT, but again, the plants are in net cups. For those that aren't familiar with hydroponics, the building of the system is only the first step and you should include a follow up video showing it actually being used.
they dont have the cups at builders, couldnt find the gutter clips as well, the pvc they used is not food grade, but I'm building it anyway, will be using the pool noodle instead of cups
if you wanted more oxygen saturation in your water allow the return line to break the water surface in the main tank. Also if the public doesn't know, you're using a #4 possidrive bit on your cordless drill for the wood screws
Really nice and attractive design. I would copy this but make a change to the water levels, they are a little high, I would move those drain ports as low as possible to not keep so much stagnant water in the tubes, more like a true spec NFT, keyword "Film"

For beginners that are handy, this is a good way to dip your toes. That said, the design is flawed and I wouldn’t recommend it. 1) The reservoir is too small and water will spill if and when the pump is off. 2) The ports are too high meaning that the water level is a little high for an NFT system. 3) The system is glued together and cannot be taken apart to be cleaned which is necessary from time to time. 4) The bottom pipe holds little water due to the design. This means it is only useable when the plants have long roots . Additionally, when the pump is off it converts to a holding tank and overspill.
Hi how are you all doing I live in a rain rainy rainy area I like the PVC design and the materials used as well however for as long as that plastic has a shelf life of over five years I really don’t think that The wooden frame will hold up. Heres another dilemma to ponder, when you have to change the water with the solution in it, how do you empty it. The outlet for each hole in the tubes sit above the upper half of the tube making it difficult to fully drain the water. I think you'll need to put in some drain plugs in each tube. Also the tube just before the reservoir doesn't fill properly when the pump is on. It does not allow enough water to rise up and reach the bottom of the net cups. The water flows back into the reservoir then gets pumped back up to the top tube and then follows down each tube until it gets back to the tube just before the reservoir, these seem to work. When the pump is off the water fills up the tube just before the reservoir making it really only a bigger reservoir for the water to sit and wait until the pump turns on to move the water again eliminating that tube to grow anything. At least this is what I am experiencing and since you don't return messages I find this is more of a trial and error. If your going to post videos on how to build projects, you should spend more time explaining, you are after all Professionals, YES ? hmmmm
By the way if you drill a 2 1/2 inch hole you won’t fit your net cups in them. The hole needs to be 3 inches in order for the net cups to sit deep and properly for the water to reach the bottom of the net cups. At least in my world. Sad you haven’t responded.

Your 19 mm drill bit is equal to 3/4 inch but the end piece you use to thread into the end of the cap should be drilled out to 1 inch not 3/4 inch at least here in Canada. Also the size of the holes you drilled for the cups is equal to 2 1/2 inches, yet I can not find any cups 2 1/2 inches, only 2 inch or 3 inch. I'm also still waiting to hear from you regarding the water if it is to run continuously or set for a certain time of on and off. Thanks again.
water runs all the time with hydroponics otherwise it stagnates and loses oxygen, it is a liquid nutrient that the plants sit in and draw their life from, think of the water as blood, it needs to move and flow always or it dies.

YES, I thought there was just a thin film of water flowing under gravity through the system. I think it is called NFT - Nutrient Film Technique. Although there is a Kratky method which uses a bucket filled with nutrient solution that depletes as the plant sucks up the food, maybe this is following that principle.
I am trying to build this system in the USA. I can’t locate the 400 liter per hour Rhino pump used in the video. No other company seems to have a pump with dimensions that will fit into the 4” pipe. Also, I am using imperial dimensions of 4” for the pipes and 0.75” for the connections. thoughts?
Does the water run continuous or is it on a timer?? I’m picking up 4 inch PVC tomorrow I have reserved, then put it together as that was the last piece needed. Can’t find any 4 inch here on the island. Thanks. I’ll post a picture once I’m done
A ppm meter will get you there. Look for a Hydroponic store. Some may be catering to the cannabis market but they will still help you. Just different weeds!
