It does work and stops shed roof leaks but it only lasts for about a year, I did mine last October and I've just had to do it again, because it started cracking and letting water in, just thought I'd post this to keep people informed. It is a good product but doesn't last as long as maybe it should,it is now £30 a tin, cheers
In case anyone is still interested, this product goes on well with a SOFT sweeping brush (the type you would sweep a laminate floor with). I bought a couple from pound land. MUCH MUCH easier than a paintbrush.
Builder wanted £800 to replace flat roof , 2 tins of “ with fibre” comes in 2 types with or without fibres, fibres stop it cracking over time. On offer atm tool station £16 with fibres. USE GLOVES! Used 1 tin let it dry over night, next day used second tin. Saved me £723.
I've just been quoted 600 to replace mine so think I'm trying this first thank you, it has 2 big cracks in so need to look at patching first then cover with this paint, so the fibers
I can't thank enough for this vid.it literally saved my badly leaking felt roof.painted this on a fine sunny day last week n since then its been raining nonstop. And not a single drop of leaking.grt stuff.thank u dan.
Thanks for this video! Literally saved me from stripping all of the felt of led my garden office (it’s quite a large shed). Had a leak last week in this horrendous weather. Put a good coat of this stuff on and it seems to have done the trick so far. I’m going to try and put a second coat on when the weather lets up again.
Grat help for me, thank you. In my case flat porch roof covered with felt started to leak. Following recommendations bought and gave 3 coats of "Thompson's 10 YEAR ROOF SEAL" in 3 dry days, above 10 deg temperature outside. First terrential rain and leak comes back. Climbed the roof after the rain inspect the cover. Seemed healthy, but notice tiny spike. Trying to snap it actually started too peel entire coat and peeled coat from entire roof in almost one move! But the worst thing was - it was dry on the top and wet underneath! It was working like kind of film letting water leak to the ground and keeping it there. Following you movie i bough instead Everbuild Black Jack All Weather Roof Coat 5L and just one paint did the job perfectly! Thank you guys! I should have come across this review sooner.
I've just done my 3m X 2.4m garden flat roof, the felt hadn't failed or no leaks but it was a nice day and the experts say this lasts up to 10 years plus. I bought a 25L drum on eBay and used a garden soft broom to paint it on. Took me about 45 minutes.
Dan. Started on mine yesterday, but my old knees, hips and back will never be the same buddy. Ha! Ha! My bitumen was much thicker than that, but the same make as yours. I hope to finish mine tomorrow with any luck, it seems to work really well so thanks for the video once again.
2 years later, how did the roof hold out over time? I have a gentle pitched roof, no current leaks and was thinking to do this to buy me another few years till I am ready too properly re felt? Cheers
I used a full size roller with a soft sleeve on the end of a broom handle, poured it on the roof and spread it around in no time. Also, although more expensive I found the Bostic product much better.
Many thanks for this I have the adhesive but will now get the coating as it seems like a great product and will save me stripping the shed roof felt....😊
Hello Daniel, thanks for posting this video,my shed is just over two years old and has started leaking, it's January and I've just caught a dry day to put this stuff on, exactly how you did it, totally agree seems like a quality product and hopefully will do the trick, after reading some of the comments I'm sure it will, cheers
I've used this & Roofix & the important thing is to mix it thoroughly. I now use a mixing tool [£10] in an electric drill, which is miles better than a stick! As I have a 20ft x 12 ft roof to cover, I will roll it on & not punish myself with a 3" brush.
true mixing it is important, we did the job on a sunday afternoon when shops were closed the roof was leaking so wanted to get it done before the rain that being said brushing will apply a thicker coat, however you can roller 2-3 times if needed.
I'm not a fast mover and it does go off quite quick - I found that if I put the tin inside a bucket that had a few inches of boiling water in it; it gave me plenty of time to cover my 15 sq meter roof, without straining my wrist stirring every 5 minutes ;-).
Just wanted to share that I used this product after watching your helpful video. I'd started with the thinner 'Bitumen Paint' but this didn't do the job. I follower it up with 2 coats of this 'All Weather Roof Coating', and, fingers crossed it is holding up however one issue was: one of the problems with my roof is there's a lot of pooling of water - this product says that it will be resistant to rain almost immediately but the problem is that in the areas of my roof where the water pools, the paint has also run into these areas so is thicker. The paint may be showerproof instantly but where the water pools the paint has split to some extent - it still seems to be holding the water off but once it's dry I'm going to give it another coat of paint. I used a tar brush which was quick, but it might have gone on a bit too thick to dry quickly.
Spot on video. Used it to tank a vertical wall a few years back to block water ingress ( ultimately from a leaking gutter ) really a belt & braces exercise. Now watching this for a small non lead flat bay window roof, was harder to get hold off but will try Toolstation ( a mere 100 yards away!) 😊👍
Propper diy guy .... u wana try do it cheep get bitchmin 1st .... tbh if i was u id just re felt it lol tool staion etc all desinged to sell trade trade and u diy stuff
Having watched your video I have just used this product on my leaking garage roof, I applied 2 coats to seal a 12” long split in the existing felt , a small felt patch was then applied and a further 2 coats of the Black Jack applied over the patch and the result looks excellent. The product is very easy to work with and good value at £17.45 a can. Fingers crossed the leak has been stopped. Thanks for posting your video and inspiring me to attempt my repair !
Hi Rich - A year down the line now. How would you rate this product? Did it stop the leak. Storm Eunice damaged the felt roof on our kitchen extension, and a I just need a quick, cheap fix that will last 12-24 months until we can afford to have it done properly.
A stellar video, very informative. Very interested to know how well these products have performed over the last few years. I've got a roofing issue on the horizon so it would be great to know how effective these products are and what the longevity is like.
Good afternoon I have a question for you. On a flat felt roof we had a slight leak in one of the bedroom ceilings; * We Bitumen painted the felt joint/seals (how long is the job good for?) * We Bitumen painted the felt joints/seals and then a 2nd coat , a few days later, for the entire roof( how long is the job good for?) It only caused a small leak and that was down to the recent 6 weeks of solid /hard rain/torrential rain. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thank you
Just a top tip, Use a soft brush like what you use indoors, or a 5" paste brush, also, a company in wakefield called bc profiles sells a 25ltr tin of 905 for £43 plenty for 2- 3 coats but good video you got there in the end, 👍
Blackjack works for a short term fix, but won't last long on a flat roof that gets sun all day in summer, it eventually just melts through the porous areas it sealed and you need more, it may work better on a flat roof that doesn't experience full sun all day long in the summer, or in places where its not so warm in summer, but as a short term fix it can help in some situations, it's just not %100 guaranteed to work in all situations.
I agree Vinnie,my shed is South facing and gets the sun all day and it has cracked,so the location is definitely a factor when applying this stuff, cheers
@@philipgordon6248 The jet black product gets really hot, had the same issue with Thompsons that I think started to deteriorate and 'alligator' in one area of my felt roof on a garage after those 40C days in 2022. It was a section surrounded by parapet wall that gets less air circulation and probably hotter. I've covered it again with the top coat as grey hoping that it will be a bit cooler.
Very informative video. This stuff looks like the solutions to my problems. It’s amazing how much water can penetrate a loose felting nail or find that hole in. the felt.
Really enjoyed watching this video. Your commentary was to the point and has given me the confidence to do this job on my own flat roof. Now I just need to wait for a couple of dry days :-)
Great video thanks👍🏻I’ve just ordered a tin from amazon to do my shed roof with so I’d love to know did it rain just after you finished the video and when it did rain did it solve your leaking roof? Thanks 🙏
Hi Lee, thanks for your comment. Yes it's still working and in great condition, we expect this to last a number of years really and I reckon it will do. Probably best to get it done sooner rather than later as the weather is starting to turn cold now.
Dan, Was about to re-felt my garage this spring, but seeing this it looks a better job, easier and cheaper. Did it work and did the roof become water proof again? Would you suggest a second coat? Brilliant help and very apt for me right now.
Bought the heavy duty rough type of felt for my shed. So after 10 yrs it must be loosing it"s oils, had pin hole leaks. Being the rough type of felt was wondering if, a coat of unibond first would make a small tin of blackjack go on easier and further. Cool vid by the way.
So I’ve put new boards on the pre-fab garage roof. I’ve got felt on there now. Do i need to torch or do I just paint over the felt? New to DIY - cheers
I used this after watching this video in May last year, had no leaks until now? Only used a single coat to be fair but used the whole tin so applied quite a thick coat, especially on the joins of the felt. Any recommendations, should I buy another tin and try and apply another coat inbeteen the dry weather or re-felt?
Thanks for the video. I have just today applied 5L worth to my old shed roof in the hope it will last me another 2 or 3 years. Time will tell of course. I used a mixer paddle on my cordless drill to mix it thoroughly before use and then I used a wallpaper paste brush to get it on the roof. You'll need some turps or white spirit to clean any tools you want to keep (I discarded the brush but the paddle mixer cleaned up well)
would you recommend stripping back old felt first or just paint this stuff over the top? I have an old shed with felt that is in ok condition, but has started to go brittle and flake. I was wondering if paint straight over would be ok or if I should smooth it back slightly first. What do you think?
I would either brush the old stuff then use black jack, as it will adhere better and fill holes but really if the felt is that bad then consider replacing it.
Hi guys . Great video. !! 3 Years on how is are the roof leaks. ?? . As I have a slightly larger workshop/storage , as yours . felt etc . a replacement roof ,is too costly at the moment . Heavy rain ..results in water ingress . Would be good to know ,as we may treat the roof ready for winter ? cheers
I had the same problem in my kitchen flat roof leaking I'm going to buy 5l then paint the whole roof hopefully should sort my leak But the only problem is UK bad weather
@@DanielJohnHowTo Hi Daniel, I watched your video and ready to piant the roof of my shed, but not sure if its ok, can I send you the image of roof then have your comment? Thanks. Eric
Followed your cleaning the roof advice and off I went (not literally). Easy to apply, great coverage and really pleased with the results. Will add another coat. Thanks for the tips etc.
I had the same issue with my roof before water was going through the felt but I corrugated it instead after for long term protection. Just curious did this work did it do the job you brought it for?? I've got a flat roof at the front of the house, although its not leaking its got stone chippings on but looks like its been up there awhile. I'm going to wait until the better weather and coat the roof before putting stone back on, I'm wondering wether to use this or not? Thanks for sharing your thoughts
it did work, and we did consider corrugated but at the time i didn't have the money to do it but corrugated is best long term so you've done a good thing.
@@DanielJohnHowTo it was only a small area i corrugated but I would have had to reconsider if a larger area like you say it would have been more costly. Thanks, I will look into this product when the weather picks up 👍
How has it held up long term guys? I have a relatively new large roof like yours where the guys didn't not seal the joints and I think I have leaks from the nails in there wholes. I was hoping something like this would fill and seal where its penetrative as I can't see the leaks being caused by anything else at this stage. Many thanks for the video. Chris
I'm getting a new shed delivered soon, I'm thinking about coating the roof before applying the felt as the felt supplied is probably going to be thin, or should I just buy thicker felt?
coating the boards isn't a bad idea as it will stop the wood for rotting, you can lay the felt and paint this over. thicker felt would be better but we paid for good quality stuff and it didn't last that long.
Hello Daniel, could you tell me please did this waterproof roof paint work? I note your didn't lay down a primer first. Would be good to have a follow up video 3 years down the line.
I had the same problem but mine was coming in at the front and runing down the timber .and runing down the back wall so ive aded more felt to the front overhang but i am gona use this on the roof just for extra safe results .
It would be really helpful to hear from you as to if this worked and stopped a leak. I have a leak in a small porch to the house ans are looking for a similar product that might work. The other products are about £50 quid for 5kg so I am interested hear if this worked
Hi Daniel, aware this was 2 years ago, just wondered how it’s still holding up? Felted my new shed I built from scratch last year, just had a massive down pour and noticed floor wet pretty much along where there beams run front to back. Layer felt across beams opposite way.
@@markramsell2722 More by luck than judgement, it would probably still be watertight without golightly mincing about with his little brush, a pointless exercise.
Iv just used most of a can 4+ litres. Didn’t find any fibrous material in it. Are you sure it wasn’t consolidations of solids that needed more stirring to break them up and disperse them into the liquid? Just wondering if one of us has a dodgy can?
it's funny you mention that because i have purchased two tins of this stuff recently which is a long time since making the video and didn't notice any little bits this time either. Perhaps it was a dodgy tin or they changed something, not 100%
Daniel thanks for the reply. You may be right about them changing it. Iv seen some types in other videos still of the black jack brand which do have fibres to reinforce it and stop cracking. Thanks for your time.
@@DanielJohnHowTo ive just had a mate look and the problem is a raised bubbles up bit of felt on the join, so ive been advised to seal it, if this stuff will be thick enough to briddge a small gap so to speak ill give it a try
@@DanielJohnHowTo i think this should do the job, ill gt the brush under the gap and apply as much as i can and coat the join form end to end and apply a little pressure it should hold it down.. in theory
@@DanielJohnHowTo interesting. I am doing a roof between my shed and fence. 1.5m by 3m. I’m going to deck the roof with pallet wood. Instead of covering the whole surface, I’m wondering whether I could use the Bitumen to seal the edges of the pallet wood and use outdoor paint for the rest.
Yes but make sure you work it into the surface, apply enough coats and it has a good time to dry etc. You can use this stuff on metal and all sorts etc.
I can't honestly remember, it should say on the product information when you buy it although it does go quite far. if you are doing a large roof it may be worth getting another tin just in case so the job can be finished, take it back if you don't use it etc.
I used this a few days ago on a felt roof. However, on a couple of areas where water settled after rain and then dried, the coating came off. Any solutions?
Hi Daniel, do you think this would work on gravel asphalt roof. our roof has gravel stuck with tar and perhaps i could scrape the grave out. i am trying to patch a leaking kitchen roof
Hi there, your facia boards on the outside look very high, they ideally want to be flush to the roof panels that is probably why the water is sitting on the roof and not running away.
