Those look great, but I really don't understand why you wouldn't just use a spline jig with your blade set to 45* - then they'd be both functional and pretty. Also would be a lot faster.

Thanks for the good spline designs. Couldn’t you glue the corner first, then with the blade at 45 degrees and the corner in a 45 degree spline jig, cut the kerfs so the splines would add strength?
Hi Courtney - you could, yes, but keep in mind your cuts would have to be 100% precise. It is one of those things that's easier said than done. Personally I don't think that I'd ever be able to line things up cleanly enough. Your wood would need to be 100% flat and square on each plane. Wood glue is strong enough that it allegedly creates a bond that is as strong as the wood itself. Additional structural rigidity on a joint like this may not be needed.
