What kind of wood did you use to relace the boom and thickness?

I have dresser draws with metal slides that slide on wooden rails. The rails are falling apart. I would like to have draws without these rails. Any suggestions? BTW excellent video!

Thanks for the good detailed video. Do you use 1/4" wood?
@katebarreldesigns2684

Good question- to be honest I am not 100% sure since I just grab it when I’m there and now what section it’s in- 1/4” sounds right though.

Great video! What can I do to repair my drawer where the plastic gliders are broken? I can't find the brackets anymore, and I can't find new brackets that fit.
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 3 года назад
Crystal James-Owens III unfortunately that is a tough one. I don’t typically work on and or get dressers with plastic brackets because of the quality. Sorry- I don’t have a recommendation on that one.

How would you remove the bottom panels if they were glued in instead of nailed in?

Did you trace around the whole outside of the drawer for the new piece or did you use a bottom you had already taken out of the dresser?
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 3 года назад
Hi there! So I use the existing bottom. Tracing the frame won’t work as the sizing will be off. Thanks!

Could you use cedar as the replacement wood for the lovely scent and moth repellant?? I just love how cedar makes our clothes smell but can’t afford all new dressers.

I’m sure you could.

How do you do this on drawers where a slide needs to come off and go back on?

This is super helpful. I saw a dresser I want to fix up and it has exactly this problem, paper liners and all lol. Do you have any suggestions on how to secure the board on the back of the dresser as well? Thanks.
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 2 года назад
Thanks! I would say you could use the same nails and or a nail gun even to secure the back of a dresser. Just depends on the type of backing.

What is the difference between a mallet and a hammer (besides you can use one end to remove nails on a hammer)? I think I have an orange mallet instead of a hammer. I purchased it over a hammer because I liked the color and it is soft and wrapped inside of like silicone material. I definitely thought it looked better than a wood hammer.
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 2 года назад
A mallet is softer than a hammer, and the head is larger. A hammer is made of metal and has a smaller head.

You are so cute! Thanks, you made it look so easy! I hope it’s easy for me! Can I buy the replacement wood at Lowe’s Home improvement ?

How did you know what wood to buy?

I recommend bringing your old bottom of the drawer with you. That’s how I was able to determine what works best when I first started out.

Thank you so much for this video, I have some questions, though. When you said "trace" what did you trace? What type of wood did you use? You said one inch nails - finishing nails or flat head nails? I think that's all for now.
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 3 года назад
You’re so welcome! I trace the original drawer bottom to help me get a size of what the new one should be. Any small finishing nail should work just fine for you. Hope this helps!

the original bottom had marks from sliding in & out. Did you need to make new grooves for the drawer stops/slides or do they happen naturally?
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 4 года назад
Christina Kim there was no alteration needed for stops or slides. The bottoms just needed to be replaced. They typically show marks from rubbing because the drawer bottoms have become warped, hence needing to be replaced. Thanks!

What is the thickness of the wood, I went to Lowe’s & they sold me the 1/4” which is to thick.

why did you glue the joints? They weren't glued before
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 4 года назад
pirate1958 they were glued before- they are typically always glued. The glue has been worn away. Always reglue the joints.

i wish they would jsut make good drawers instead of this particle board bullshit
@katebarreldesigns2684
@katebarreldesigns2684 Год назад
I don’t deal with any particleboard as these are vintage pieces. With time the drawers will sometimes warp as they are typically 60-100 years old. It’s a quick update and keeps the dressers going for many more years to come. 😊
