In episode 5 of our IKEA kitchen renovation series, we are installing the IKEA Sektion rail system. As we have an old house, nothing is flat, square, plumb or anything resembling straight. So we have a lot of work ahead of us figuring out how to install the Sektion rails.
Throughout the video, we give a bunch of tips on how to install the Sektion rails for IKEA kitchen cabinets. We run into a few issues that are out of the ordinary and come up with great ways to solve issues you may have when you are finally installing your own IKEA kitchen.

If I could give this video multiple “thumbs up”, I would. Short, concise, and actually tells you what you need to know. Thank you!!!!

Used to live in a pre-war apartment in NYC, and the kitchen got a gut renovation before we moved in. We convinced the super to install 40” cabinets and it was our single best decision. Excellent storage capacity made our daily lives so much better. Although my husband and I are both tall, those who aren’t could use a simple step stool to access the top shelves, where we generally stored out-of-season and less-frequently used items.

The 40” cabinets really help with the lack of storage! Just have to put the less used stuff on the upper shelves as the wife is a little too short for them lol

I feel your pain with the old house "features!" Am about to embark on an IKEA reno of my 1880s top floor kitchen. Funky windows, walls, and floors abound -- I know surprises await. Love the series.

Thanks for your comment. Are you filming the reno? We are always looking for a good reno series to watch. Sounds like your reno is going to be lots of fun!! Love a good challenge.

In the process of putting Ikea cabinets in an older home with 93" ceiling. Ceiling sags so badly, I went w/ 30" uppers, and will extend them to ceiling, then finish ceiling w/ shiplap boards, that will need some serious shimming. In the end, all will be square, trim and neat. Wife is not too enthusiastic over my choice of a light blue (sky blue) ceiling. We'll see.....

As an owner of a house built in 1942, I feel your pain.. Our house has nothing level or plum. Our walls are wavy. And the guys who installed our cabinets had a heck of a time.

@@livingthereno I'm doing a time lapse but it probably won't turn out super well, I don't have much space to get a good angle.

How did you make the toekicks fit the low points in your house since you measured 32 3/16" from the highest point?

What screws did you use for the rail attached to the wall?

Nice progress! I wonder what had you done to those shims in the end. Did you trim them down to the rail width?

Thanks!! And yes after everything was set and secured we trimmed the shims to the rails width using a multi crafter/oscillating tool with a flush cut blade.

Jesus, your kitchen corner looks almost exactly the same as mine! I am putting cabinets up right now. I don't trust toggles for cabinets. If you have your wall open, put in blocking! Then you can sink a screw anywhere. For the top rail, you can measure from the bottom of the lower rail up 60". Put the bottom of your upper rail at that mark for 40" uppers. Also check your ceiling height like you did though.

Yes I agree ideally putting in blocking would have been the way to go, we did manage to get some screws into the top plate as well, we also used the heavy duty toggles and drilled additional holes through the rail as to hit every wall stud possible. that is good to know about the spacing for the top and bottom rails, our biggest concern was the celling was very uneven and we needed the cabinets to be as close to the ceiling as possible while still fitting onto the rail. you have got to love old houses! lol Best of luck with your own Kitchen!!!
