MATERIALS
Design #1 (abstract circles)
- 8"x10" canvas (I used two, but purchased a multipack at Michael's for cheap)
- joint compound: www.lowes.com/...
- piping bag typically used for icing (or a regular bag you can twist and squeeze the joint compound out of)
- spoon
- acrylic paint
- paint brush
- putty knife
Design #2 (textured flowers)
- 18"x24" canvas (or whatever size you prefer)
- joint compound
- putty knife
- palette knife
- acrylic paints
- small paint brushes
Design #3 (scalloped sea shells*)
* this design is not my original idea. I found the original inspo pic on pinterest, and then found the instagram handle of the original designer which is @ delalsalazar on Instagram.
Check out her profile here: / delalsalazar
- 18"X24" canvas
- joint compound
- putty knife
- piping bag
- spoon
- white acrylic paint
- a very small paint brush and small fan brush
I spent under $50 total on supplies to create these DIYs, and spent a few hours each day for two days doing these!

I started using light weight spackle and I love working with it! I use acrylic paint to but I do seal with polycrylic clear gloss, it's for floors but it works great

Can oil paint works good too instead of acrylic paint?

Thank you so much for sharing this. I loved these pieces. They turned out so very nice. I’ve always wondered how well textured art weathers shipping. Is it durable or a bit challenging to ship?
@LifestyleJessica
@LifestyleJessica Год назад
You’re welcome, and thanks so much for the compliment! I haven’t tried shipping any yet, but these pieces are definitely fragile. They’d have to be packaged in a way that would keep them protected well.

They look lovely. Do you think I could achieve similar results with gesso ?

Thank you so much! I’m not familiar with gesso, so I’m not sure if it would work!

Jessica, does the joint compound crumble once dry? All art pieces look awesome ❤ Thank you!
@LifestyleJessica
@LifestyleJessica Год назад
Thank you! I didn’t have an issue with this. Once it dries after a few hours or overnight, it stays together on the canvas pretty well, and is good for painting

Thank you, very useful tutorial...I was experimenting myself with this material... how do you avoid cracks?
@LifestyleJessica
@LifestyleJessica Год назад
Thank you! I had a few minor cracks after letting it dry overnight, but what I did was very lightly fill them in with more joint compound using my finger or a tiny paint brush. I let it dry for an hour or so, and then it basically sealed any imperfections up. Then I went in with acrylic paint.

Little question, can you also make this directly on the wall? Of will it drip or something? And do you need a joint compound as a base layer on the whole wall?
@LifestyleJessica
@LifestyleJessica Год назад
I just looked this up, and it looks like you can apply joint compound directly to walls to create a textured look. The article I read says to first clean the walls with a damp sponge, and remove any cob webs or dust first. Then, lightly sand your painted wall to create a surface the joint compound can adhere too. Then it says to remove the dust with a sponge. This is the base prep for applying the joint compound. I’ll link the article in this comment I’d you’d like to read more about how to execute it. It does mention that joint compound can be difficult to remove from the wall just as a heads up! www.hunker.com/13411581/can-you-use-joint-compound-on-painted-walls

If you dont want to paint them with Acrylic paint what can you use to seal them and does the drywall discolour over time? Can you add acrylic paint to drywall before applying to canvas?
@LifestyleJessica
@LifestyleJessica Год назад
I haven’t had an issue with it discoloring over time once dried on the canvas, but I also don’t have pieces that are that old. I believe it wouldn’t be an issue unless the drywall on your canvas was exposed to extreme moisture or dirt etc… since mine are all painted, I didn’t seal with anything, but maybe modge podge would work? I’m not entirely sure though.

It is joint compound! I think it is Enduit Bandes à Joint Pâte in French?

Why does it crack

I've found that it cracks if put on too thick; had to be thin like 1/4 "
