Thanks for posting. I've been looking for example DIY installs of a rudder kit for my sit on top kayak, but most videos show foot pedal steering. I'm going to adopt your idea thanks.

I was thinking about using two pivoting skegs ; one at each end. They will act like ailerons to increase instant reaction. I’m a commercial diver and will be utilizing what I know about submersibles, submarines and ROVs. I’d like to make a shallow water submersible out of a couple of these but that would require destroying two kayaks and use air pressure to keep the water pressure from distorting the structure. It can be dry but the person inside would have decompression obligations if descended below 33’. So; he’d be on scuba if there was a failure. Also the submersible would be attached to a buoyed and anchored descent line. It would work fine down to thirty ft. I’m thinking about it; that’s all right now.

Thanks for sharing this video, this is a great DIY idea for a installing a kayak rudder. I thought of something for your steering mechanism, ad a simple knob to the top of the wheel that can spin. Something like a "Brodie Knob" used on tractors. Just a thought.

Yes sir some sort of Nob like that would probably work. I'm also trying to come up with a different pulley then the wooden one. Thanks for watching.

Is that an aftermarket single rod holder you put into the 3 rod holder spots you built? or just a piece of pvc, then you heated and put a glass beer bottle in to open it up?
@Bamaoutdoors
@Bamaoutdoors 4 года назад
It is diy out of pvc. I have a build video on it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e6BAvdBVI-4.html

@@Bamaoutdoors i know but the other video doesn't include the addtional fishining pole holder inserts, but thanks!! I may cut out a slit down the pvc so the reel can fall down in the gap a bit...btw, saw a separate great video that had little dog leash, quickly unclippable bungees to hold rods to yourself and to rack, if you want to ensure they don't get yanked out ever...
@Bamaoutdoors

I almost cut slits in them so my rods would sit down in it, but it worked pretty good like it was. I Have add some Rod leash bungee cords to hold the rods in place.

You aught to see what I’ve done to a PFD. I’m still altering that by adding more floatation, a crotch strap, reflective strips. And a DYI inflatable dry suit from a rain suit. This is stowed on the back of the PFD; secured by a length of yellow tow strap with Velcro attached. The idea is to blow the outside heat wicking water off or away from the user. It’s also added flotation and visibly brighter than clothing. I flood my dry suit all the time when working hard then blow the water out. A kayaker should dress for submersion every time he goes out.

Wow now that's a sure Nuff DIY project right there! Lol
@dalethebelldiver7740

Bama Outdoors I added a catch all net in the back to put two water bottles. As you know the water will weigh nothing if I go overboard. I built an attachable floatation collar . I’ll have to test that. Everything doesn’t work as expected but for the most part; they do.

Is it hard to use the hand control and paddle? I'm looking at trying to retrofit my existing foot braces but if the hand control works ok I'll try that route. Thx!
@Bamaoutdoors
@Bamaoutdoors 4 года назад
It's not hard to operate and paddle at all. You really don't have to adjust it that much. I would put something more like a handle on the hand control just to make it a little easier to see what direction the rudder is pointing and easier to grab. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

Great video! Very helpful. Liked and Subbed. Thank you for using waterproof material ( I believe those cutting boards are Teflon, or Delrin) to make your rudder mount instead of wood...like other RU-vidrs. 😅🍻

Yes sir I like using that stuff for a lot of things. Thanks for the comment and sub!

Awesome..question, does the wooden pulley remain fixed in place? I imagine the current can move the rudder out of position, how do you keep it still ?
@Bamaoutdoors
@Bamaoutdoors 5 лет назад
It's on a track and I have a lock nut on top with a washer. As long as it stays pretty tight the rudder will stay in place but It will get lose after some use. I've been thinking of redoing that somehow.

I’m using those rubber well nuts on everything that penetrates the kayak.

I'm not sure if I've seen those before. Can we get them online?
@dalethebelldiver7740
@dalethebelldiver7740 5 лет назад
Bama Outdoors yes. I bought a pack of stuff from Amazon. I’m waiting on it now. Look up,well nuts They are the best for creating holes in the hull to mount stuff and sealing them up. I bought a shit load; I’ll be popping holes in that thing left and right; lol I’m using your 1/2” cutting board idea to mount a skeg. I have to build up 2.5” because there is a stupid wheel built in. Buddy; that kayak will be a Harris Kayak by the time I’m done. I’m Harris; lol

@@dalethebelldiver7740 good deal I'll look them up. I'm always putting holes in a kayak for something. Thanks!!

Listen; I found some tape that bonds to the kayak I’m doing an experiment to see if there is a chemical bond or I can induce a chemical bond. If it works; I’ll have my kayak hull wrapped with my company logo and awesome color scheme. Lol maybe a thousand bait fish. Lol
