This is by far the best looking ATX PSU conversion I've ever seen. Well done my dude.
@s4rg380

Since the rotary selector switch is merely there to select the input of the Volt/Amp meter, and you still retain power on 3.3/5/12V rails regardless of the switch's position (which is very useful FYI), I geuss I do have the "same level of genius", though, not in the bad light you painted it. You however, neither seem to know why that would be useful, nor that it is an inherent trait of an ATX switching PSU. Assuming you know what the "switching" part of the description entails. If you are going to leave salty comments, make sure you understand the topic beforehand. Unless it is you're goal to look like a fool. If it was, - success! Also, this was a 7 month old comment.

Nicely done Sorin. You have given me many good ideas for my next ATX conversion project: the rotary switch and volt/amp meter. Very good-looking finished product you can be proud of.Tip: A good way to cut square holes in the steel case is to use a cold chisel. One or two blows will cut a perfect corner through the steel case.Thanks for all your effort in producing this video.

Nicely explained and steady vues, and no loud horrid music, that's great.. Take note RU-vidrs, This is a perfect example on how to do a useful video.. My only comment is that the current sense wire and resistor is a waste of energy. Perhaps using a 12v 12w bulb would be a good idea so your power supply could have a desk lamp fitted on top to light up what ever you are making when using this power supply.. Note the output smoothing is usually done by the motherboard in a PC, those nice rows of capacitors that when dried out burst open and short out the motherboard. It's nice if you can fit some big value capacitors to the two 12v outputs and the 5v use a 16V cap for the 12v output and a 10v cap for the 5v output. use the highest UF value you can fit inside the box or even mount them on the rear of the box. Then fit a 1k resistor across each capacitor to empty the cap and lower the voltage to zero when it's switched off. a 1/4 watt resistor is fine for this.. as the current will only be 150 milliwatts .. great Video and well done.

Perfect! Had a little jolt of education there. First time seeing the current reading independent from the voltage source.. could have broken some misconceptions fast when I was in school.. So you have to just be alert of the max current ratings.. the problem might be that you wouldn't be able to tell what you are doing to a single rail when you are using more than one at a time.. but I agree with the practical boundaries.. I would also not likely need more than that.

I really like this - as it puts everything into the ATX enclosure. Most add an additional enclosure, which I haven't thought were necessary. However, I have the same comment I have with other electronic projects I've watched... Buy a heat-gun! I watch people using a match or a lighter to shrink heat-shrink tubing, and it is so ineffective and so inaccurate (and possibly dangerous). In the US you can buy a heat gun for ~$10. This will make your projects much easier and can be used for many other purposes in your projects.

i build digital upgrades for 1950s model trains. I have a basement lab with 4 benches. I am using train transformers for my test stations, but this idea is outstanding, I have several power supplies from failed devices, I should check them for power and re-purpose them as bench power supplies., I like the digital meters and switches. The variable component may use a pot or a transformer lever with a knob in stead. This is an inspiring project for me to try, thank you D

Sorin if you look at the holes you did drill, they were near perfect round right after drilling but still had a irregular shape. Try to put a peace of clothes between the drill bit and the metal sheet, your holes will be perfect as made by a CNC.

Guys I really need help with this project, so I started building it from scratch, got me a good 500W power supply unit from the used computers store, I think it was really cheap. I disassembled it, cut the wires as the video shows to work with them easily... and got the other parts from the electronics store, the thing is... I was trying to do the first holes with the hand drill but my cat just keeps standing there, staring and judging every movement I make, it won't pass... I have tried everything... from food to scratches and it won't move from the project table... I'm stuck at this, you guys can help me pleaseeee? I like the caution and professional install using "shrink" tube (Sorry, only shrinking when heat is applied. After that it is shrunk. We just call it "Shrink tube" The added hot glue, I like to find one of the bottles of nail polish my wife didn't like painted onto the binding posts and screws. They tend to work loose. I would also add some inside and on the outer nut of the rotary control. I finally got some med and strong "Lock-Tite" brand thread lock. Works the same as nail polish but better but cost $8 to $15 usd a little goes a long way but its expensive, Thank you sir, well done. I think ill do one but another with variable amp and volts plus protection. about $30 more than this. Cheers!

Hi! This PSU looks really good! However, if you have three sets of banana plugs/binding posts (3V3, 5V, 12V) - why do you need the rotary switch? I would think that when you make these, you either have the rotary switch for selecting voltage and one set of binding posts, OR you do it a bit simpler with only the three sets of binding posts (even simpler is one red for the different voltages and one common ground).
@prenticetyndall
@prenticetyndall 5 лет назад
I think the rotary switch just changes which output the meter displays.
@mohammadzare9927
@mohammadzare9927 2 года назад
he can't directly connect output high current to rotary switch because its sparks and i think after 5 time rotating switch,its messed up and die. so if no rotaty switch so ho can remove anothers banana post during use one? i mean inorder that shows volt and current of just one post? just one other concept remains : use really instead of direct wirin to rotary to pervent spark and damage( anyway its randomly shot down unit becausr of china responsibility to probife minimums!😁

You just gave me a super awesome idea sir. Why run all 4 12 volt connections to one plug? Just make 4 12 volt terminals (+ and - pairs), 4 5volt terminals (+ and - )and 5 3.3 volt terminals (+ and - )and 1 heavy duty 12 volt terminal (+ and - ) with amperage control for my electroplating. Sounds like it needs a big case right? You are correct in that thinking. I am just going to re use the old pc case that the power supply came in and repaint it a nice metallic finish to make it look all sciencey. I might even put voltage readouts on each receptacle paring if there is enough room for 16 readouts. That is a dream lab setup on a stock Dell 550 watt power supply. :D

I've got an idea: Would it be possible to connect the built-in fan as the dummy load so the power supply turns on?! Would this be enough load?
@Sorin_DIY
@Sorin_DIY 6 лет назад
hi. that is a good idea. for this power supply it will work. but the fan is consuming very little current and there are some power supplies which may need a bigger load. also you need to solder a connector to the yellow and black wires, so you can easily remove the fan cover if you need to reopen the power supply. some modern PSUs have variable voltage output for the fan, so the fan's speed will variate depending on the load or PSU temperature. if you connect the fan to the 12V output, it will ad a load, but the fan will always work on maximum speed.

You can shrink the tubing using the tip of your soldering iron. Safer than using a flame.

4:01 You can also put a Dremel sander disk bit onto a drill press and cut horizontally along the plate with the metal against a block of wood.

yep, that sounds like a great idea. Seriously though, if you are really short on space, you can power something kind of decent with either a buck or a boost converter running of USB.

I don't see this tip often and learned that a hard way (cause I do first, think later): make sure binding posts are insulated from the psu casing (duh)

For the USB port, you should have used a car USB charger. The one that plugs into the lighter port and turns 12 volts into a steady 5 volts and has a regulator protection circuit on it. It would simplify things and make it safe for your phone

hi. thanks for the suggestion. but I will not use it to charge my phone. I'm using it to test different USB DIY devices with up to 4A. please watch the part2 video for more info about my power supply.

Good work To protect the ATX again short circuit. It will be better to connect the Green wire (power on) to Relay contact with black wire. And to energize the relay with the 12 v or 5 v accorditly.

-12v is just a reference voltage. Its so you can get 24v potential accross +12 and -12v rail

A few tips for the sheet metal work: * Drill at each corner for a nicely radiused square hole. 5/16" drill for 5/16" radius (equates roughly to 8mm) * A "nibbler" is very helpful for cleaning up the straight cuts, and it's an inexpensive tool * For the large hole the wires used to be routed out of, you might find a plastic plug made for furniture to plug it with. ***I hope you find that helpful! Your video helped me in a few areas, so I hoped to return the favor as much as possible***

The -12v line can be combined with the +12v line to give you a 24v output. YMMV on if this will kill the power supply after a time, though.

AND ALSO: When drilling holes into metal, drill slow, and use bits made for it. Same goes for sawing, use a metal saw/file, go slow, go accurate. Drilling a smaller hole first is great, but doesn't help when you have shrapnel in your eyes

ALSO, for the power resistor, if you run it on the 5V + 3.3V rail (hope you checked which one had the most maximum power), you should really use 5W 5ohm. You can go higher ohm if you have to, but 10W and 43ohm just sounds like sparks and fire waiting to happen
@kruskotv1311
@kruskotv1311 Год назад
By power resistor, you mean the dummy load resistor ? And about using 5W instead of 10W, whats the issue there , can you explain, please ? (Im not that tech savvy)
