In this video I converted a Desktop/PC ATX power supply to a fixed lab bench power supply that can output -12v,+3.3v,+5v and+12v, and insane amount of current. The comoponents requierd for this ATX Power Supply Conversion are really inexpensive and with commonly used tools. I also added a USB port functionality to this ATX power Supply.

Thank you for this well done video and wire diagram, it made it easy for a beginner at electronics to do. I did a couple things slightly different as mine is for a singular power supply for a car radio and phone charger to use in my workshop. Thanks again, Good job.

im just now watching this for the first time. I gotta say BRAVO.... You did a great job my good friend. Im bulding a custom benchtop power supply unit myself. Im having issues installing my LED power on lights. Like im not sure how or where I want to place them yet, but im going with the 3.3v and 12v outs and the 5v will be USB. I also had to put my fan on the outside top of the unit also. im also adding a 110v ac plug for my soldering iron. ill take a picture once fimished and upload it to my comment if it allows me to.. Thank you again my friend, you gave me some great ideas on mine and a few extra ideas.. Chase R from USA, Ohio.....

Hi Saad, great tutorial, very easy to understand & well laid out. In my case I have a Coolmax V-400 PC power supply. The 3.3V line is 30A, which is higher than the 5V(28A) line, and higher than the 12V1(14A) & 12V2(15A) lines combined, but the 12V lines together have the highest wattage. I am a little unsure of where to draw from for the Led input and the 5ohm resistor. Maybe second guessing myself, but most of all just don't want to screw it up since it's a nice unit to be working with. Any thoughts?

Best video I've seen on this project. Great job very informative, and your ability to explain things as simply as you do assures me that you have a understanding of why you do something instead of just it goes here because they said so. Thaks a million. I would like to find out about getting more power from other sources like to run cordless tools that the batteries are too expensive to replace also run laptops????

I have a recommendation the only thing I would add not change to everybody's RU-vid power supply conversions is use a plastic back plate on the outside face under the binding post. I know that you're supposed to use banana clip leads but when people perform projects a lot of times they just try to wrap wire around it, and spark or ground against the back plate. Just an idea not that what's been done by anybody is wrong or use it wrong. Your videos are awesome and your conversion is awesome and clean good job I've watch this video a few times I like it.

The unit I have has 18A on +5V, 20A on +3.3V, 18A on +12V1, 18A on +12V2, 0.3A on -12V and 2A on +5Vsb. Does it matter which one (5v or 12v or 3.3v) the dummy load is on? I have yellow wires and yellow and black. I'm assuming the yellow will be 12v1 and the yellow and black will be 12v2. If I combine them could I theoretically have 36A?

So I got done with this project, and while it works, it's putting out some odd voltages. I'm getting 6.7, 10.7, and 26.7! About double what it should be putting out. Also the PSU's fan doesn't come on. I'm guessing it was probably junk before I got started. I'll run it til it conks out though, just can't use it for any precision stuff. Good thing I got it for free, just wish I had tested it out before putting the effort into the conversion. Any suggestions to what might have gone awry are welcome, whether it's the PSU or something I did to it.

So I got an old PSU which I know for sure works(i powered the PC it was in on before modding it) but after connecting all the stuff you mentioned, when i plug it in it just wheezes and does nothing(not even the 5v standby works). The wires are the right colors since they're labeled on the PSU case, I tried both 5W@2.2ohm and 10W@4.4ohm dummy loads on the 5V wire, and I still get nothing but wheezing. What could be the issue? Thanks a lot!

Very nice! ;-) An opinion: Using the red wire to power your Power On light (Green LED) is fine... But if you had used the Grey wire, you would not only have confirmation that the power is On, you'd have confirmation that the unit is operating withing specs! Isn't that worth having? Anyway, something to think about. Cheers! ;-)

why can't you just use the factory main switch to get into standby mode? why did you add another one? I'm confused since I don't see how you wired it in the schematic and if I wanted to use the factory main switch, how would I wire it or leave it as is?

Since this is a recycled PC power supply, in the original configuration there was a PC on button, these two wires green to black are those power on/wake up trigger for the power supply to energize all outputs. As he said in the video, if these two wiresare not shorted you will only see 5v from the aux 5v out as long as the power supply mains switch is on and plugged to line voltage.

The Power Resistor in the video looks like a Arcol HS25 Series, rated at 3.3Ω ±5% 25W. The description says 5Ω 10W, while the link is to a 5W 10Ω. Which one do we use?
@saadaamir
@saadaamir 7 лет назад
Keith Tank yes you are correct. The reason i used that one was cuz i had that one laying around. The point of the power resistor is to keep power supply stable during low current draws. So generally speaking 5ohm 10w resistor would do the job going any lower than that wouldn't effect to power supply much.
