Have a roofing job coming up and needed a ladder hoist! figured instead of paying $2k we could build our own! #ladderhoist
I've always seen other roofers using ladder hoists and was intent on getting one, but had sticker shock when I saw the prices. After watching some videos on how they're made I figured it was something we could fabricate ourselves. Luckily we had enough scrap stock around to make up most of the components with the exception of the harbor freight electric hoist.
Going to be testing it out this week on a roofing job coming up. Will do a follow up video on how it works out!

Wow! very nicely done. Thanks for sharing. So just a note, I had hoist cable break few days ago, never would have thought that could happen It rusted inside the block weight that is just above the end hook. It was a drop down ladder that fell 9 ft and cost be 300 to buy new one. Just sharing because I am hoping my stupid mistake will help others use extra safety measures. Will now have a 2nd strap to hold load if cable fails, which will suck unless I can make auto retract one direction. Anti fall lines are just too expensive.

This was sped up. Watch video at 0:75 In my opinion that ladder used was too light. Use the heavier 300 lb rated ladder instead.
@theshop6161
@theshop6161 3 года назад
I'd agree. if you had the choice go with the heavier ladder. We used what we had at the time, but good point!

the harbor freight hoist mentions a 20% duty cycle, have you had any issues with the motor overheating while raising shingle bundles to the roof?
@SuperJamster1

How did it work for you? Obviously his was based on Ken's Karpentry hoist, but I like how you used the material you had and the skateboard bearing/wheels. I'm going to make one this Spring. Anything you would change?

Hey sorry for the late reply! Worked out great so far! Hauled about 50+ Bundles on it and no problems so far. Can't say i'd change anything about it yet, but we're about to put it back to work so ill let you know.

how much did you save on material? and were you charging labor when you built this?
@theshop6161
@theshop6161 Год назад
I believe i only spent around $300 for the hoist and some odds and ends. No charge for labor as i built it for myself, but made a good return with out on the job it was built for. 2 years later its still going strong!!!!

i want a hight adjustable.. any tips ?
@theshop6161
@theshop6161 2 года назад
Oufff haha now thats a challenge! I'm not sure off the top of my head as to how i would do something like that, but its probably possible! My concerns would be 1. Weight - The lift is already fairly heavy and a bit awkward to move about, so I can only imagine adding more hardware/components. 2. Moving components - Something like an adjustability feature introduces more complexity/moving parts and would create more potential for either user error or mishap. I wouldnt be against the idea, but keeping it simple would be best. Actually as I'm writing this i just thought of a "solution". Instead of having the ladder be adjustable just keep multiple ladders of different lengths. Kind of a simple solution that would only require mounting the basket and motor from one ladder to another (which is not hard to do). That way you get your adjustability, but don't sacrifice the weight or structure of the ladder hoist!
@blackdaan

@@theshop6161 ive also looked up some profi models. they have U beams 5 pieces that fit in each other.. and move in and out. and use a big wheel that wont get stuck on the hight difference
@caper58
@caper58 2 года назад
@@theshop6161 what about using an extension ladder, adjust the ladder to the height you want, and if you don't like those skimpy hooks that lock it in place, drill and through bolt it. That way the top stays the same and the motor is mounted on the bottom section.
@jessicataylor4743
@jessicataylor4743 2 года назад
its too short, how is that going to reach 26 foot 2 story roof?
@theshop6161
@theshop6161 2 года назад
We only needed an 18ft section, but if you were to need to get up 26ft you could just swap the components over to a taller ladder!
@jessicataylor4743
@jessicataylor4743 2 года назад
@@theshop6161 i meant that it wouldn't work on an extension laddar, because of the 2 laddars overlapping

What about just buying an electric ladder hoist, then selling it back on ebay? It'll be like you rented one.
