When you do open sided laminate stairs installation you can face the stair nosing problems. I got it in my last job side. The laminate flooring stair bullnose didn't want to stay in the way I needed and I found a simple decision to solve this problem. Just watch the video "DIY Laminate Flooring Stair Nosing Installation on Open Sided Staircase" and you learn even more about laminate stairs installation!
What is inside:
00: 11 Find out the length of your tread and where the nosing connects with it.
00:32 Put your mark.
00:44 Cut nose with 45 degrees at the angle.
00:59 Find the length of the short part.
01:20 Measure the width of your tread.
01:43 Here is a tread angle profile making.
02:14 All tread parts should fit well but there is a problem with small bullnose. How to solve it?
02:27 Cut drywall!
03.13 Now you can start the installation!
03:53 Done!

How did you do the next stair that was not against the wall? How did you deal with the "exposed edge"?
@dennishoffman5146
@dennishoffman5146 3 года назад
The bull nose cannot be raised on a stair edge because it is a trip hazard and against the code. Always cut the stair covering short to let the bull nose settle level with the laminate so there is no raised edge.

Hi Dennis, this type of nosing is standard for a floating floor. You can send your questions to manufacturers and building departments to change the rules. Thanks!

Please be safe. I think Vinyl, Laminate, and hardwood are all dangerous on stairs. I know carpets are dirty. I think using a easily replaceable carpet runner may be the best way to go. You only have to fall down from a slippery stairs once to realize carpet is the safest option. Since permanent carpet is too hard to replace therefore I recommend a runner option.

Thanks bro. I think I got a pretty good idea of what it's gonna take to complete. Ive done laminate flooring before and been pretty successful but never stairs. With your help I think I got it! I only have one concern left, and that's my stairs were built with 2 by 12 treads so when I put my bull nose it's not going to cover it up completely. I guess I will just paint what's going to be left showing after I put bull nose on. Thanks again, and were are you located at?

I am in Canada, Vancouver city. You should install the first stair riser, bullnose and one full board of your laminate floor and then start floor installation FROM THE STAIRS. If you do like this you'll neve have any gaps between stairs and general floor. When you finish the floor you can return to the stairs and finish their installation. Unfortunately you went in another way... Honestly it is hard to give you any advices if I do not see your problem. Send me few pic and I tell you how to solve it.

Hi there. Great video. What size of nail do you use for attaching all the material. I bought 1½" 16 gauge. Any suggestion that is better for this application?
@MrYoucandoityourself

Your nails are too thick. I use 23 gauge.

Hi my question is, does the nosing has to overlap on the treads? I seen other videos on laminate stairs and some of them don't look like they are overlapping. thank you.
@MrYoucandoityourself
@MrYoucandoityourself 10 лет назад
No, the nosing hasn't to overlap on the treads. It has to attach to the treads. Watch several videos from professional floor installers and you'll see it.
@Ovj1980
@Ovj1980 10 лет назад
Do you usually start from the top of the stairs and work your way down?? And does it matter if you put the riser piece in first or the tread?? Thanks brother!
@MrYoucandoityourself
@MrYoucandoityourself 10 лет назад
1.Yes, I always start from the top and work my way down. 2.I prepare 3 parts of the stair: riser, tread and nosing and look if they fit to each other. 3. Installation (if you do not have a stair landing): a) riser b) tread c) nosing If you have more questions, please feel free.

I don't fault your methods or practices, but please don't put hard surface on steps. In my experience (20+ years) in flooring, almost everyone comes to their senses and rips hard surface off their steps or adds a runner after the first time someone slides down the steps. Don't think it will happen to you? Just wait...
