Just starting watching a number of your videos and have to say, you really make it look too easy. LOL. What I like most about the videos is the no-nonsense approach. With that being said, when installing this type of flooring on a concrete floor, does it simply require the moisture barrier material?

As a professional there's so much wrong with this video. You should never lay along the same grain as the original floor & if you do a ply sub-floor should be installed in the opposite direction of the original floor boards. Where's the vapour barrier? Why didn't you remove the skirting boards prior to starting? Why use a silly saw around architrave when you can use a multi-tool? @23:00 you can see you damaged the board next to where you were sawing. This would never of happened with a plunge blade on a multi-tool. Cowboy job!

I was surpised to see the use of those small cuts at the walls. I've done most of the rooms in my home in laminate, and always planned out my layout to avoid using any boards less than 4 inches wide or 8 inches long. Most manufacturers suggest this. Also, having a pull bar and oscillating tool is a must in my opinion when doing laminate.

pull the baseboards off and skip the quarter round it looks a lot better and the quarter round looks terrible after it gets hit by brooms and other stuff in a few years. Also put a thin line of sealant on top of the base boards when you install them it keeps dust from getting in the crack and a quick wipe they look good.

I remember you doing a video where you where talking about the Pro/Cons of different flooring. But instead of really getting into costs, installation time, and difficulty removing/installing. You went straight into a miniseries about putting down flooring. I'm a big fan of floating snap in ceramic tiles that have "bumps" so they're not slippery. I have cheap carpet, which absorbs dust/moisture. Cheap laminate which expands and contracts from occasional water drops, cheap vinyl flooring that has dents/scuffs in it. Who knows.. maybe someday I'll finally pull the trigger and go for ceramic!

I love everything about this video. One small thing to make it easier at 38:50: Cut your skinny wall boards and last full-width boards to length just like you did. Lock in your skinny wall boards in the full-width spot, lay your full-width boards against the wall, make a mark all the way down the wall boards that are locked in the full-width spot, pull them out and replace them with the actual full width boards. Prevents cutting too wide if the wall is bowed at all because your straight edge will always hit the wall at its widest point. Love your channel, you’re better than bob vila!

20:44 do not use a standard compressor and blower tool to clean out your computer. They push moisture along with air so unless you have a refrigeration system or some other moisture removal system on your compressed air just use the stuff in the cans which only has some propellant moisture that rapidly evaporates.

Just last year, I watched your video on painting and it changed my painting world. Thanks to you and your crew for your outstanding presentations! FWIW, I started using my $60.00 HF wet tile saw, along, with a 4.5" carbide tipped wood blade, also available from HF, for all my laminate work. It's like a light and portable little table saw....I can keep it on the floor and drag it around the room with me. About 80% of the mess goes into the water tub. I would imagine if you put the blade hood on it would contain even more of the mess. I can do long cuts, crosscuts and even intricate cuts featherboard fashion or just scraping cuts along the side of the blade. Anyway...thought someone might find that useful. Thanks again!

As a lover of historic properties I’m really sad to see those original floors covered up, but at least it’s floating so if someone else buys that house in the future and wants to restore it, the vinyl isn’t glued down.

One tip that's pretty important, start and finish each row with no less than 8" of material! Anything shorter weakens the joints from weight of furniture or foot traffic

@@ShadowDaNet True, but as you proceed and you encounter doorways, etc. and you make your adjustments, you may find that your end piece may come up shorter than 8" so you may have to take a little off of the previous plank to make sure your end piece is more than 8".

Don't understand why all the dislikes. Thank you very much for this wealth of free information. I noticed you didn't need to use flooring spacers to keep your 1/4" gap? My laminate instructions say 1/2" all around, hoping the quarter round will still cover it. Thanks and cheers from Wisconsin!

Hey Jeff, First of all, love your personality! One of my son's just purchased a home which needs the carpeted flooring replaced in 3 bedrooms. We have decided along with his twin brother's help on going DIY with laminated flooring. Thanks for making this awesome video which is one of the best that I have found! Most of the videos are discouraging or overwhelming because of lack of or too much information!

Jeff, I've done this in my house. Great video! Personally, I've never liked the look of quarter-round. If the room is getting a make-over and a new floor... wouldn't you prefer to pull the old dented floor moulding and run the new floor under new trim? It doesn't add much to the cost of the project and with a fresh coat of paint on the walls, the entire room looks new. When I did my house, I painted the new trim outside on a sawhorse after it was cut to length with two coats of high-gloss white. For a modern-looking room, it's stunning the difference it makes! Cheers, my friend.

I prefer to redo the whole room but not every situation requires that and a lot of people where wondering how to close the gap. In this old house the floors are quite sloped so new base would need a trim piece anyway!

It's better to do new trim I have one room done from scratch with lifting trims and other not and second after some time look like for redoing and for my bed was baby room what put my house upside down .....do I need finish what I would do with this so called builder as single mum ......I don't do o my now electric and plumbing in my house and fastest I am ready to do myself cheaper less time consuming and satisfying and my tools collection is just growing ....next project will be shead BCS storage under the stars running out with space hahahaha only missing pink drill hahaha

Awesome video!!! I’m a novice who loves working on my 100+ year old house. I always use the 12mm (10 + 2 for padding). It’s just a better stronger product. Very forgiving. I always put a underlay material down just because I don’t have a subfloor. Expensive but makes for a better floor. Thanks again!!

I’m currently researching for a lake house remodel and we were originally set on Vinyl planks. The house I live in now has two different laminate planks. Quickstep from Lowe’s and Pergo Timbercraft Elite. The laminate locking mechanisms on these two brands were much stronger than any luxury vinyl plank sample I looked at. In fact, the Quickstep mechanism was more sturdy than the more expensive Pergo. Though it wasn’t by much and the quality of the material in the Pergo appears to be better made. Also, oddly enough, the Quickstep has no padding underneath, while the Pergo has Gold 3mm. They honestly both feel the same when walking on them. There are some spots where you can hear debri under the Quickstep, so in my opinion the padding underlayments are really only beneficial to reduce that debri sound signature. Since we aren’t using this in the Kitchen or bathrooms, we decided to go with the Pergo Optics 12mm ($3.90/sqft) and FloorComfort 5mm padding (~$65/100sqft). FloorComfort is same price as Pergo Gold but an extra 2mm of padding. Looks easy to cut and connects together like a jigsaw to help keep it uniform.

Hello! I LOVE your videos, they’re so helpful! I’m getting ready to install vinyl flooring in my home, and wasn’t expecting all of the extra things to deal with (putting vinyl up against fireplaces and baseboard heaters, quarter round, etc). I’m wonderinggg- I know it’s probably not best- but would it be terrible if I just undercut my baseboard and left the 1/4 inch expansion gap under there? That way I wouldn’t have to put quarter round on? I’d just slide the vinyl right under the baseboard gap. (While leaving the 1/4 inch expansion gap) so essentially, couldn’t I just do the same thing I’d do for the door jam, but do it to all of the baseboards? It seems easier lol

GREAT video, thank-you, I relied on it heavily to do my first laminate project! One important thing though is never discussed, nor could I find anything on it anywhere else on RU-vid. If you trim your laminate to fit under the door jambs like he shows but still leave an expansion gap everywhere, and do the 30 degree end of the quarter round at the door jamb as he says, you will have a visible hole in the laminate right there at the end of the quarter round. You can actually see this hole in the video at 28:45. Looking down from above, especially with a lighter coloured laminate makes this hole all the more evident. What I finally came up with which seemed to work great is first, when you are cutting under the door jambs, allow yourself to cut at an angle into the end of your baseboard by the door jamb, like he describes at 22:28. Then after you've under cut the jamb, go with a narrow chisel (no wider than the thickness of your laminate) and carve out the bottom of the baseboard at the end at the same angle that you cut into the baseboard. That allows a space for your laminate to go under the end the baseboard, and when you install the quarter round, there is no hole showing in the laminate. You do have to do some careful jig saw work to make this fit just right, leaving a gap, but it can be done.
