Many older vehicles are equipped with filament lights, often used for various lighting needs. However, these lights tend to have high battery consumption. For instance, my vehicle's brake light comprises four filament lights, and I observed plastic parts melting due to excessive heat.
Concerned about the power usage, I removed the light and measured its power consumption. Using a multi-meter set to ampere checking mode, I supplied 14.1 volts and found that the four bulbs collectively drew around 1.4 amperes. This amounted to 3 percent of my car battery capacity, highlighting the high cost.
To address this issue, I opted to replace the filament bulbs with bright LEDs. Choosing LEDs capable of handling 14.1 volts during the battery charging phase required the use of current-limiting resistors for each LED.
Initially, I tested 470-ohm resistors, and while the LEDs functioned well, the resistors generated excessive heat, leading to power wastage. Subsequently, I switched to 620-ohm resistors, which resulted in minimal heat production and maintained satisfactory brightness. The power consumption was measured at around 60 milliamperes, making these resistors suitable as current limiters for my LEDs.
Converting from filament lights to LEDs is an effective way to conserve your car's battery. However, I advise against replacing factory headlight bulbs with LEDs if the factory headlights use filament bulbs. Nevertheless, you can confidently replace filament bulbs in parking lights, signal lights, brake lights, and reverse lights with LEDs to improve energy efficiency.
