Great job with that mirror video. I know a lot of custom automotive restoration uses walnut to blast their cars down to the metal rather than using sand. Sand creates small pockets whereas walnut leaves a cleaner finish.

I have been trying to figure out how to create that modern strip of frosted glass and was going through the route of either buying some toxic chemical to de-mirror it or purchase the mirror already with the frosted strip. The lesser expensive option was going to be a lot more work. This is the only video showing this method and it’s I’m not only cheap but you end up de-mirroring and frosting it at the same time! You are a life saver! Thank you for posting this!

Great job with the mirror but I would of made the leds accessible from the back. Eventually the leds will burnout. Personally I would of put a piece of sheet metal behind the leds as well, that would give a longer life to the leds and keep them cooled down.

Your project looks great! I have a question. Is your wife satisfied about how much light she has to clearly see people's face during work time? I'm doing my photography studio decoration this month and thinking about trying this. Thanks in advance, great video!
@alexjbauer

My Destiny if I were to make another one I’d use an extra light strand and maybe one with more lumens. It does produce even light on her clients faces but she also has ceiling track lighting that helps as well

When sand blasting did you have any trouble with tearing of the duct tape? I would think if the sand could chip the reflective surface of the mirror it would also tear up the tape? I'm going to make this soon and thought about using double sided tape and wood to make the stencil but if the tape isn't an issue that seems like way less work

Is it really necessary to make it so deep when there are high density LED strips with good diffusers? Can't the LEDs be applied to the back of the glass?

Hi thank you so much for creating this video. I have a couple questions tho. Much sand did you end up using? What kind of tape did you use? And can you please link me to the pressure machine needed to get the gun working? Thank you. I’m trying to recreate this but on a much larger mirror.
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 4 года назад
You don't really need much sand. I used maybe 1/4 of a 40 pound bag. You could also stop mid way and clean up the sand and pour some back in. I kept reusing most of mine. I used black gorilla tape, any air compressor should work. I used my dads and it was a small entry level one. It had to stop every so often to refill up with air. But during that time I collected sand to reuse.

So when sandblasting, you sandblasted the back of the mirror? Not the front (reflective side) right?
@alexjbauer

Did you guys buy the frame? If you made it yourself where did you get the wood? Last question lol is the wood supposed to be bigger, smaller or the same size as the mirror? I'm planing to build one for my fiancé who is a barber 💈 and I need help 😂 Love the video btw!
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 3 года назад
Thanks Amanda - if you pause at :24 I put a screenshot of the dimensions. The frame is about 1/2in smaller on all sides. You can buy the 2x4s from a hardware store like Lowe’s or Homedepot. The back of it is just thin plywood. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

When you sandblasted did the clear or the frosted border look splotchy or not uniform? Thanks looks like you might’ve saved me a couple hundred thanks in advance and great work
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 5 лет назад
Underwood Family it turned out really nicely! It was even all the way around. I had to use playground sand so it took a little longer than expected. I couldn’t find anything around finer locally. I keep walking around to the front of the mirror to see the frosted area from that view to see what areas I had to blast more. Hope it works out well for you!

@@alexjbauer do you think that pressure washer would do the same?
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 5 лет назад
@@chongwang4339 I don't think that would work very well. If it did it would take a while. The sand helps chip away the back material.

Does the frame sit flush with the mirror on the bottom to make it stand like that ? Do you have any pictures of the back of the frame where it attaches to the mirror?
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 5 лет назад
The frame does not sit flush with the mirror. There is a 1.5in gap all the way around. They mirror is leaning on a desk behind it for the video. I have it wall mounted using a french mount cleat

@smoovez 3 года назад
I still have a lot of splotchy spots and the sand blaster just won’t hit them to get that clean finish. Did you use a sanding sponge or anything after to finish it off to get it to be so clear? The way yours looks right before you power the LEDS is so perfect
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 3 года назад
I only used the sandblaster. Not sure why you are running into issues. I will say it did take a few passes on each area but overall it left no splotchy spots. You could try a sanding sponge or maybe a sanding dremel?
@smoovez

@smoovez

When you put the silicone base to attach mirror, did any squish and expand out into the hollow area you had your leds? I’m worried it will show if it spreads after drying? And cause some shadow in the led border itself?
@jegramat
@jegramat 2 года назад
This is the video I was looking for but the idea of sand blasting is not workable for me since renting or buying the equipment will be costly. Thanks for the video though. I am thinking of it differently; having a slimmer mirror frame that will house the light in front while the mirror remains intact (no transparent surfaces
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 2 года назад
Good thinking! I will say however, that my sand-gun was like $20 from Amazon and I borrowed an air compressor from someone. It can be accomplished at a low cost. Best of luck with yours!

www.lowes.com/pd/Style-Selections-L-x-W-Polished-Wall-Mirror/1176261 - I sandblasted the reflective surface off of the areas where the light will shine through. The duct tape is there just so I don't damage other areas of the mirror.

What do you do to change the lights when they go out
@alexjbauer
@alexjbauer 3 года назад
The back panel is a thin sheet of plywood that is being held in by a few screws. I did, unfortunately, think of this after that fact and I had already painted the inside. I had to use a utility knife around the parameter to separate it from the other painted pieces. When/If that light strand goes bad I will take it down and remove the back panel to replace it.

Technically, I guess that could work. The only thing I would worry about is how crisp you could get the lines. I also think it would most likely take longer than using a sand blaster.
